Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Wikissandro, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited appears to be an article about yourself. Writing about yourself is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians.

As this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. We require individuals to meet Wikipedia's definition of a notable person to accept articles about them. A page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to or change it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! A tag has been placed on Draft:Alessandro Testa, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hi. We don't get to write about ourselves on Wikipedia. I've reverted your changes to Carnival; please do not continue in this fashion. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 20:48, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for taking the time to review my changes.
I understand the logic, of course. However, please consider that I am a recognised scholar in my field. When it comes to this specific entry, I am one of the most prominent scholars about Carnival. Basically, the only comprehensive academic history of Carnival in English as been published by myself (I refer to my 2020 book for Routledge). If I am not qualified to write about Carnival, then nobody is. I have noticed that in this as well as in other instances on Wikipedia, there could be more use of my scholarsip - and we are taking about academically recognised works for reputed publishers, which is very often not the case with what gets cited and referenced in the entries I am talking about. Again, I find it a little paradoxical to mercelessly delete my informed additions (besides, I always cite other authors and theorists, too) and keep the uninformed ones instead. "I am a recognised scholar in my field" is not a reason that you get to break the "don't write about yourself" rule. The point is that if you are notable and important enough to be mentioned on Wikipedia and/or have an article about you, you still shouldn't be the one writing about yourself; you should let someone else do it.
Please review the Wikipedia conflict of interest guideline before making further edits. AntiDionysius (talk) 21:00, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reaction.
The point is that I don't even care about my personal page. But my works can help improve the topics and entries I am an expert of. I have noticed a number of factual errors, misleading info, and incomplete sections in at least a dozen entries, and I would like to improve/fix that. Of course, since I can only edit / create entries I am competenent about, that means that I will have to use the available scholarship, and of course the scholarship I know better is my own. As I wrote before, it was my intention to set out to improve, for a start, the entry about Carnival, which I find very long but theoretically poor. Now, I am maybe the only scholar to have written extensively about theories of Carnival specifically. If you don't let me use this wisdom on the section of this entry about precisely theories of Carnival, then I find this reviewing system rather curious. And the entry will remain theoretically poor, of course, since I am one of the very few competent enough to write about that. But well, as you wish.
