Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, WicksHoward, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you created or edited was Draft:Howard Wicks, which appears to be an article about yourself. Creating an autobiography is a common mistake made by new Wikipedians—as this is an encyclopedia, we wouldn't expect to have an article about every contributor. Your user page, however, is a great place to write about yourself, making sure to stay within user page guidelines. Just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit it normally.

The page you created about yourself may well be deleted from the encyclopedia. If it is deleted and you wish to retrieve its contents, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page. If your contributions to an existing article about yourself are undone and you wish to add to it, please propose the changes on its talk page.

COI

[edit]

Information icon Hello, WicksHoward. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.--VVikingTalkEdits 14:16, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am the personal assistant to Howard Wicks who is the founder of the Locked-in Trust and we work together, sometimes I act as his hands which is why I am typing this. I have tried to add Howard to the list of 'People with Locked-in Syndrome' page and also the page regarding Brain Stem stroke. Howard and I are new to this so if we are doing something wrong please spell it out rather than simply making generalisations.

Response

[edit]

You wanted the reasons why I have removed your edits in layman's terms, the best I can do is what has already been posted above. First you have a COI, and are considered Paid, next Wicks is Not notable according to WP policies and should not be included in the articles.VVikingTalkEdits 15:24, 21 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Howard Wicks

[edit]

What makes most of the other people listed as having locked-in syndrome more notable? Howard has set up a charity to help other people with locked-in syndrome so I do not understand how he is less notable than many of the other people listed - how do we go about changing that? in any case the page is titled 'List of people with locked-in syndrome' - Howard has locked in syndrome which can clearly be authenticated on his charity's website - hence referencing it. I don't understand what the conflict of interest is, I thought it might be the sharing of the site that shares Howard's personal story so I removed that. I left the trusts website to authenticate who he is and what makes him notable. Thank you for your assistance.

A conflict of interest restriction applies when an editor has a personal contact with the person they are attempting to create an article about. Creating an article while having a COI is not forbidden, but the editors are expected to state the nature of their connection on their User page. The requirement is mandatory for paid editing. Undisclosed paid editing is grounds for being indefinitely blocked from all future editing. Wikipedia defines notability as there being several publications about the subject of a proposed article, published in reliable source publications (major newspapers, magazines, etc.). What is on a person's own website, press releases, interviews... do not count. Establishing a charitable trust is admirable, but not sufficient. As I replied at Teahouse, people need to be subjects of articles to be included in list articles. David notMD (talk) 23:43, 22 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
