Welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, including your edits to Queens University, but we cannot accept original research. Original research also encompasses novel, unpublished syntheses of previously published material. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your information. Thank you. - What you added to the article is interesting and well-written, but for one thing. It uses synthesis to arrive at conclusions that are not contained in the references. For example, the Alumni Page entry does not mention the word racism. It does say that Queens recognized Sutherland's gift in his tombstone. I think that the information about Sutherland and also the students who were expelled is important. We need to re-write it with recognition of its importance within the racial attitudes and stereotypes of the times. Pioneers like Sutherland were instrumental in bringing Upper Canada out of its colonial past. Sunray (talk) 18:12, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- I've edited the piece you added, trying to stay close to the references. I think it tells a very interesting story about the nature of racism in Ontario in the 19th and early 20 century. Sunray (talk) 18:56, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Image:QueensBlackface.jpg
[edit]This is where I got the picture from. It cites livejournal.com. Livejournal is opensource from my understanding of the website. I couldn't find the picture on the site. All the major papers in Toronto used the picture. I assumed from all this that it is open source especially because of livejournal.com cited and it is open source. The picture was circulated on the internet. I don't think anyone wants to claim the picture as their own for obvious reasons. They uploaded it with anonymity in mind.
Image permission problem with Image:QueensBlackface.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:QueensBlackface.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 16:41, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, Livejournal is not open source; I'm not aware of anything in their terms of use that stipulate that contributors are releasing all rights to a free licensing arrangement. Often the media are able to get specific permission, but that doesn't necessarily make the image itself public domain. If we can't determine the image's copyright status, we usually err on the side of assuming that it is copyrighted. (ESkog)(Talk) 17:08, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Your recent edits
[edit]Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 16:57, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
License tagging for File:Markham VisMin 2006.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Markham VisMin 2006.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.
For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 22:05, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Image descriptions
[edit]Hi Warrior1867, thanks for uploading your images to Wikipedia, but they would be more useful to others if they had descriptions. Just go into the edit section of the images, and after where it says "Description=", add yours. It is important to add both descriptive (who, what, when, where, why) and technical (equipment, software, etc.) information at the time of creating the page, which will be useful and highly informative to later editors and readers.
