I actually don't know much about North Korea. The Ch'onma-ho article was thanks to an article published in Armor and some web research I did thereafter, and some discussions with the author. Kijong-dong

[edit]

Hi Visviva- I'm suspicious of the claim at Kijong-dong that the name of the village means "Peace Village"; without knowing the hanja it's impossible to be sure what the name means, but it doesn't sound right to me (I would expect 평화의 마을). Do you happen to know where the hanja might be found? Or confirm that it's not likely to mean "Peace Village"? --Reuben 00:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please help

[edit]

Please take a look at Demographics of South Korea. I've been trying to add content from the U.S. Library of Congress Country studies, public domain content. I thought you were supposed to add reputable content, even if you didn't know Wikipedia formatting rules, so that others could improve it. Instead, one editor keeps just deleting it, changing his reasons every time. First, he thought it was copyright violation. It wasn't. Then he complained that it wasn't wikilinked. I added wikilinks. Now he says it's irrelevant, even though it's all demographics content directly from the demographics section of the country study. I don't know what his problem is. Please help, this is a very effective way to discourage contributors. WikiWitchWest 23:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article about Wikipedia Users

[edit]

Hello,

Wikipedia user David Badagnani directed me to your user page. I am a freelance writer working on an article about the wide array of people who make Wikipedia their life, their passion, their pastime. Wikipedia “addicts” if you will. I’m looking for people just willing to tell their story of how they got sucked into the intellectual whirlwind that is Wikipedia; how you got started editing, how the obsession grew, and what you spend your time focusing on these days? Do you write articles from scratch? Is your main push toward one particular type of article? Do you patrol for typos and errors, or spend your time diligently fixing vandalism? Do you take part in the “social aspects” of Wikipedia; engaging in animated discussions or decorating your user page with all sorts of internet memes? Have you ever forced yourself to take a “Wikipedia break”? If so, what’s your 20/20 hindsight on the obsession? Basically I’m just trying to get an idea of what it’s like for various Wikipedia “addicts.” If you are interested in participating, please email me at brianwrites@gmail.com

If anybody else, other than this user is interested in participating, feel free to email me as well. This article is intended to be a light informational piece, nothing too heavy or controversial, just merely introducing readers to a subculture that they likely had no idea existed. So please don’t email me with your conspiracy theories, or your grudge against the Wikipedia hierarchy… unless it directly applies to your overall experience with the site. This article is about the USERS, not about the pros and cons of the site itself.

Thanks,

Gyeongju Basin external links...

[edit]

Hi! The Gyeongju Basin article looks good. I was happy to see that you or another had linked Professor Kang B.W.'s work to that article. I was just talking with Professor Kang yesterday and he mentioned that he had recently published a revised version of that linked paper in a well-known English-language journal. I will get the info and add it as a reference sooner or later. I recall that there might be some findings about flooding or the area's early history that we may be able to incorporate in the article. ====thank you!====
Hi Visviva! Thanks for looking at those articles so quickly. I'll get to work on your suggestions (or anyone else: feel free be bold, etc). I put in the links to ko:wiki because it was my intention to create Korean versions of the same articles over there as well. However, I have been lazy and I haven't even got a username for ko:wiki yet. I don't even know if we need a Korean ID card number to do this or not. Mumun 10:53, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the invite. What would this involve doing? Or should I just continue doing what I'm doing? As far as I can tell, these systems and groups serve mainly to coordinate articles, tell what needs doing, etc. By the way, I gave your username to a guy in California who is writing an article about WP users. I gave him the 10 or so editors I felt to be the best I've encountered, and you were one of them. Could be interesting. Badagnani 18:50, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I just added myself to the Wikiproject Korea site. If you have any idea for maps of North Korea you want made feel free to ask. Also I had been adding and updating North Korean military articles recently, but its hard to find good information on North Korea military. I've started to used Google Earth's imaging and knowledge of what military vehicles/aircraft etc. look like in order to get some estimates on what composes North Korea's military. I haven't been adding much lately though, but I will soon, thanks.Orthuberra 10:11, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got your message, sounds good on the map, I'll do one large county/province map for all of North Korea, and separate ones for each province, label and upload them and let you or the group decide how to use them. I'm already working on the map, it's gonna be big like 1100x1200 pixels, but it might be a few days since Thanksgiving is coming up and I'm busy tommorrow.Orthuberra 07:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New Chinese surname categories up for deletion

[edit]

Hi, thanks a lot for that! Not sure if this is of interest to you, but a new editor has just added a number of categories for Chinese surnames, which I believe to be very useful, particularly in grouping individuals who share a common surname but use different romanizations. As is usually the case at the Categories for Deletion area, the people who frequent that place generally try to delete every new category, regardless of whether they understand its use. In this case, they seem not to understand the utility of being able to have a category for everyone with the name "Liu," for example. If you like please voice your opinion here. Badagnani 06:25, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm not sure how I missed that you were the proposer. Strange that you wouldn't agree that the sense of surname solidarity for individual (or in rare instances double) hanzi/hanja surnames (which many of my Korean and Chinese friends both feel strongly about) is of sufficient interest to allow for an grouping that would easily transcend the various romanizations. The only other way to do it is to have long lists of names in the individual surname articles. Oh, well, I'm sure I won't be able to change your mind in any case. Badagnani 07:15, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really know about the distinction between the importance of lineage and surname but I'm sure the lineage within the surname ("clan" or whatever) is stronger than the mere surname itself, as it is in Korea. Of course, a lot of North American Chinese have falsified surnames anyway (in order to get into the U.S.), though many have preserved, in their memories, their "real" family name, which is still very meaningful to them. But once I saw those new surname categories I realized how helpful they are, to identify people with a common hanzi/hanja surname, even if they use a different romanization. Your Smith/Schmidt analogy is apt, but there are always ways to work around things like that. Badagnani 07:24, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maps done

[edit]

Main map for North Korean subdivisions is done and on respective articles, smaller province maps will be uploaded tomorrow.Orthuberra 04:38, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded the blank for North Korea on Wikimedia commons under maps/asia/korea/north korea filename DPRK_Div.png, copyright shouldn't be a problem for the original since I used a slightly older '98 US Government map (which are not copyright protected) among other things with news reports and other public information about North Korea to make this one. Anyways if you want me to make any changes to lettering on the map I will, but it will take a little. Other than that use it as you like.Orthuberra 03:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Baekgwa +maps

[edit]

I added an empas_m variable for maps from Britannica. I have only applied it to Ryongchon. It uses the article number from empas_b, but links to the map; it requires an extra variable which I think is always "001". If you have any corrections / clean-ups, please feel free to make them. Also, I think the "001" could usually be left out if there's a way to make it default. Thanks. --Reuben 01:42, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that's better. It looks good except that you still have to specify a variable under empas_m. Otherwise nothing shows up at all. --Reuben 01:54, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we could have an empas_b without the map, and an empas_bm that includes a map link. This would break if there are ever any geographic locations where the map isn't entry #001, but I haven't seen that assumption fail so far.
I was also wondering if it would be useful to extend the template to have an image link. It would be something like the map link, but take two parameters: one for the image number and one for an explanatory description. Perhaps it's more trouble than it's worth to add these, though. --Reuben 19:26, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

vandals...what to do?

[edit]

Hi Visviva a non-korean issue, but there is a problem with serial vandals on the Regina, Saskatchewan article. i have reverted two times already today. i reported the vandalism and requested 'protect page' on some talk page that i thought was appropriate. do you think is there anything else i can do in such matters? Mumun 13:02, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Visviva -- the vandalism has stopped because we pressed for semi-protection. On a different note, I in my talks with Hairwizard about Nangnang Nation, I grasped for a good example of how we might present a topic that has multiple and contested meanings. Then I saw Macedonia (terminology) and thought that the editors of that article have done a good job with an issue that is somewhat similar: Macedonia is a word that has different but related meanings to different groups. We might learn something from there about how to merge with Lelang, etc. I especially like the illustrations ㅋㅋ. Mumun 11:55, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Visviva,

I've noticed that you have been working extensively on articles related to Korean fauna. I'm wondering if you've you been doing any work on insects? Some time ago, I uploaded a picture of a strange critter while taking a stroll through Soyosan, near Dongducheon and I took a snapshot of this guy:

???

Just on mere observation, I am guessing it is an assasin bug of the reduviidae species, but I am still not sure. I've tried doing some research, but I can't seem to find anything in English, and the fellows at the reduviidae talk page haven't been very helpful. Turtle Ship two deck vs. three deck controversy

[edit]

I would like to insert information on the current two deck vs. three deck controversy surrounding the turtle ship. Most models of the turtle ship assume it was two decked, which would put the rowing sailors in the same deck as the fighting marines. A cumbersome situation indeed. Based on a recently discovered drawing done in the 17th century, which appears to show three decked turtle ships, there has been recent scholarship in Korea that has been supporting the extra deck theory. I think the wiki article needs to address this. Do you wish to help me translate Korean sources into English to help me in this wiki update project? WangKon936 06:06, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. It's still basically an undecided question. Some authorities have adopted the split, others haven't yet but are considering it. Thanks for getting back to me; please see correspondence on my talk page. Keesiewonder 10:25, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Visviva! I saw the discussion on Keesiewonder's talk page. This book is written in the Korean language, I believe? Would you have any comment on the idea of using an English-language reference (if available) rather than one in Korean? But in the mean time, do you have any suggestions on a better translation of the title? 'The nation's prayer and gut locations' seems unusual. Could it mean something like 'The nation's sacred places?' Thanks! EdJohnston 17:08, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "Sites of Buddhist prayer and shamanic practice nationwide" sounds much more plausible, since it longer refers to intestines. Do you want to go ahead and update the article? Is there a reference for the statement that we shouldn't do our own translations of book titles? That seems rather restrictive, since we are allowed to translate entire articles from other Wikipedias.
I found an English-language travel book in a local bookstore:
Nilsen, Robert. South Korea. Moon Handbooks. ISBN 1-56691-418-3.
which has 49 pages on Gyeongju. I realize that what we need here as a reference is 'knowledge' rather than travel information, but if you have heard of that book, I wonder what you think of its suitability for the article. EdJohnston 02:56, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. I notice that you've made some additions to the seolleongtang entry at English Wiktionary. That's good. But the article here has been hacked up, months ago, and remained that way. I finally fixed the English at the Seolleongtang article and re-added the original hanja. I really would appreciate your input there, particularly as regards that hanja. It seems that there are conflicting opinions as to the original etymology but I don't agree that the previous one "snow + concentrated + soup" should be removed, even if it's an example of recent hanjaization or folk etymology, which I'm not entirely convinced of. Sweet pickled radish

[edit]

Hi, can you tell me the Korean name for "sweet pickled radish" (which is used to make gimbap, the way Japanese use tsukemono? There seems to be an article for the Japanese version of this, but none, and no mention of the Korean version. Thanks, Badagnani 01:25, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jajang

[edit]

Hi, I think we need a jajang article to go with the jajangmyeon article. Badagnani 01:25, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ISBN

[edit]

No problem. I've fixed over a thousand all together so far. Trying to find Korean titles was an interesting challenge of a person with no experience with Asian languages. --Droll 05:22, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help over at CAT:CSD

[edit]

Hi, and congrats on your promotion! Per this discussion, I'm dropping a friendly note to some of the recently-promoted admins requesting help with speedy deletions. I am not an administrator, so if you don't feel comfortable diving into deletions - or if you need more info - please don't come to me, but I'm sure that Cyde Weys would be happy to guide you if you want to help. Any help is great, but I'm sure that Cyde and others would deeply appreciate it if you could put the page on your watchlist and do a bit of work there on a regular basis? Maybe weekly? Thanks in advance! Anchoress 18:27, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Kaist logo.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Kaist logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
