Main categories of portal browse page
[edit]The main level categories on this hierarchical index of featured articles are informed by the portal category headings on the portal browse page of the English Wikipedia, in this order:
- Art and Culture
- Philosophy and Religion
- History
- Science and Mathematics
- Society and People
- Technology
- Geography
A few of the subheads are worded slightly differently: Art instead of Art and Culture and Society instead of Society and people.
Also helpful to consider are the main categories of the featured article indexes for the French and German wikipedias:

Main page categories on the French Wikipedia
[edit]These 8 categories seem fairly distinct and comprehensive. They are on the first page of the French Wikipedia (not including the research and contact categories at the very top).
I like the balance in having 4 more practical categories and four more academic ones (though there are sub-categories of the academic in the practical ones).
Main page French Wikipedia category headings:
- Arts
- Vie quotidienne & loisirs
- Société
- Religions & croyances
- Atlas de la Terre
- Sciences humaines & sociales
- Sciences exactes & naturelles
- Technologies & sciences appliquées
My translation:
- Arts
- Everyday life & leisure
- Society
- Religions & beliefs
- Atlas of the Earth
- Social sciences & human sciences (Note: in U.S. English, we don't have the category human sciences -- it does not equal the humanities -- Philosophy and history end up here for French but literature and art history are in the arts.)
- Natural sciences & mathematics
- Applied sciences & technology
Playing with these, to reorder and reword a bit:
- Arts
- Everyday life & leisure
- Geography
- Religions & beliefs
- Natural sciences & mathematics
- Social sciences
- Society
- Technology & applied sciences
These are similar to the portal browse page categories of the English Wikipedia, listed at top above, with the notable abscence of Social Science and use of History instead of Everyday Life.
Current Main Categories on Feature Index Sandbox
[edit]I used the French Wikipedia main page categories to inform the sandbox index -- history on the top level here and a combination of everyday life/leisure and society being the differences. "Everyday Life" is awkward as a category head -- need something similar and shorter:
- Art and Culture
- Geography
- History
- Life and Society (or Everyday Life and Society or Living and Society)
- Philosophy and Religion
- (Natural?) Science and Mathematics
- Social Sciences
- Technology
And, having done this: It is basically the portal browse page with the addition of a social science category and Society and People is renamed ot Life/Living and Society.
Feeling near done with this.
Note - The above ends up being close to this: Wikipedia: List of basic topic lists http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_basic_topic_lists
