Help me!

[edit]

Hello, I am still somewhat new to wikipedia, and I would like to contribute as much as I can. I was wondering whether someone could help me upload the logo for FJCU (Fu Jen Catholic University) to Wikimedia commons (as I am still unaware of copyright laws). This logo can be found in the Chinese / 中文 version of the article for Fu Jen Catholic University (link: https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fu_Jen_Catholic_University_Seal.svg). I would like to put it in the Infobox of the English version of the article. This is because I find this image to be in higher quality than the logo currently present in the English version of the article.

Thanks for your help. :D

Vincenty846 (talk) 22:33, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not commons - it's a non-free image. You could upload it here to en-wiki and copy all the fair use rationale and license from File:FuJenCathU.png, then switch the image in the page. The bots will find the old png image an put it up for deletion as unused. Size of the zh-wiki image is just right for a non-free image. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:55, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help me!

[edit]

Hello ! :D I'm user Vincenty846. I would like to ask on why my recent edits (which I have spent almost an hour editing) on Jolin Tsai's infobox and others have been deleted by user Leehsiao. Please lecture me on what I have done wrong as I am still somewhat new to wikipedia. (I am glad to listen and learn more :D). I have obtained the info in the infobox from the article in English and Chinese, as I am also an overseas Chinese that can read Intermediate level Chinese. I have used this template to make the infobox: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template:Infobox_Chinese-language_singer_and_actor. Since this template is endorsed by wikipedia itself, I thought that using this template is following procedure and not considered vandalism.

I do sincerely apologise to user: Leehsiao if I have caused any disagreements and frustrations as I am only trying to contribute as much as I can to Wikipedia (especially things regarding Jolin Tsai, who happens to be one of my favorite artists)

Vincenty846 (talk) 23:00, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have responded to you below. Simply your edits without any edit summaries or reasons. If you want to do a big change in the article, we can discuss first on the article's talk page and reach consensus. Thank you.--Leehsiao (talk) 23:51, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We can talk here!

[edit]

Hi there. I know your are a newcomer, and assume you a good faith. I have been keeping a close watch on the article of Jolin Tsai for years, because I am also a big fan of her, and contributed the most or nearly everything to the article. I reverted your recent edit because the Template:Infobox person has been used in the article for a long time, and you changed to Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor without edit summary or reason. The Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor may be used to summarize information about a Chinese-language actor or singer, but it is not necessary to do just because the article is about a Chinese-language artist. Jolin Tsai has already been thrust into the international spotlight, so using the Template:Infobox person which has been used to summarize information about artists from any countries is better. I also reverted you recent edit on section "2009–present: Butterfly, Myself, Muse, and Play" , because you edit was visually disruptive, and made the section look too scattered.

Such edit may not directly harm an article, but it often prevents other editors from reaching consensus on how to improve it. If you want to do a big change in the article, you can discuss first on the article's talk page and reach consensus. Thank you. --Leehsiao (talk) 23:35, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ! :D

I wanted to add in the edit summary for switching the Template:Infobox person into Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor, but I saved the edits that I have made before I could write anything in the summary. (my bad)

I do agree that Jolin Tsai is well known in many countries. However, I still think that the infobox used should be for Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor. This is because almost all of her songs are in Chinese, and her roots are in the Taiwanese music industry. Furthermore, based on what I have observed, her fanbase is still largely comprised of mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, and overseas Chinese in countries all around the world. Therefore, I believe that using this template is more relevant due to the nature of her majority Chinese fanbase, and her use of Chinese for her songs.

For my recent edit on section "2009–present: Butterfly, Myself, Muse, and Play" , I thought that separating and arranging the events according to the dates at which they happened is much clearer. I may have been biased while editing this section because I personally dislike things being too cramped together. (my bad)

I'll suggest the edits that I have made to the talk page of the article.

Once again, I sincerely apologise for any misunderstandings and I hope that we can reach a consensus and work together to make Jolin's article more better and complete. Vincenty846 (talk) 02:09, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I see you are not doing disruptively. Since I have been working on the Jolin Tsai article for many years, I am always paying close attention to edits in the article. Actually I used the Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor for the article before, but it generated some issues with a few other editors. For example: Using the Template:Infobox person can reflect person's residence information, which cannot be reflected if using the Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor; When using the Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor, some other editors added music unnecessarily wordy information, so that's why I finally changed to use the Template:Infobox person in accordance with the principle of simplicity. However, if you still want to change to the Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor, please let me know and I am willing to help you make the change. In addition, because you are a newcomer, so if you want to get to know more about how to improve an artist's article, you can refer to such articles as Madonna (entertainer), Britney Spears, and Janet Jackson for examples. Reaching consensus is important, if you want to make any big changes on the Jolin Tsai article later, please leave your suggestions on the article's talk page or directly talk to me, and I will always respond to you shortly. Thank You.--Leehsiao (talk) 04:02, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I've made this template to be used on her page :

I've removed all the unnecessary categories so that other editors won't add too much information:

please inform me of anything that you think shouldn't be there. If you think it's all good, you can just go to the 'edit source' and copy the infobox :D Vincenty846 (talk) 00:15, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have just changed the Infobox to the Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor. In addition, I deleted the unnecessary chinese words such as her chinese birth name and current personal name, because here is English Wikipedia for English speakers, and most of English speakers don't recognize Chinese words. I also deleted the alias, because the column is for listing official stage names for artists rather than nicknames. I deleted the signature as well, the signature image was uploaded by myself, but the Wikipedia administrator told me that signatures in Taiwan are considered as calligraphic work and copyright protected according to law, so we shouldn't put it in the Infobox. Please refer to Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Momocalbee, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Fei Yu-ching's signature 20001017.jpg, and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Jay Chou signature.gif. Please let me know if you have any questions, thank you.--Leehsiao (talk) 02:25, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I've looked at it and it looks good! :D Thanks for editing her infobox. I completely understand the arguments you have presented, and the reason why her signature can't be included. Vincenty846 (talk) 02:35, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I've been meaning to add the Zhuyin Transcription to Jolin's name box. (|bpmf = ㄘㄞˋ ㄧ ㄌㄧㄣˊ). However, I would like to ask your opinion on this before making any edits. I think it should be added since Zhuyin is still predominantly used in Taiwan, and based on the articles of many other people from Taiwan, their name boxes often have the Zhuyin transcription in the box. I think it's a small addition that wouldn't change the article much, but out of respect for your major contributions to her article, I have decided to ask you beforehand. [edit]

In general, flag icons are not used in infoboxes. Please stop adding them. Thanks! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:02, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. But please take note that Taiwan is not officially a country and that it's formal name, the Republic of China should be used. Taiwan should be added in brackets.

Furthermore, the variant 台北 is also used in Traditional Chinese.

Vincenty846 (talk) 18:59, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Name for Taiwan

[edit]

I have reverted your edits because they did not respect the consensus reached in 2013 regarding the name of Taiwan. After several rounds of heated discussions, Taiwan is declared as the Republic of China's WP:COMMONNAME and should be used in all infoboxes. While the passport and the permit themselves have the wordings "Republic of China" and "Taiwan" in them, they are issued by the Republic of China which is commonly shortened to Taiwan. The name "Republic of China (Taiwan)" is never considered to be the official name. C-GAUN (talk) 05:34, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The official discussions can be found here. While I respect the fact that the Republic of China appears in all Taiwanese legal documents including its nationality law, the value used in the infobox should be the country's common name, which is why Chinese passport's issuing state is  China rather than  People's Republic of China because China is the official commonname for, well, China. All in all, Taiwan and China are two separate countries and should be treated equally. C-GAUN (talk) 05:50, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody please help me block this IP address? : 219.85.3.67. I have reason to believe that s/he has vandalised the 2017 Summer Universiade article by deleting and modifying massive amounts of information. Based on his / her edits, it seems to be politically motivated as the user changes Traditional Chinese characters to Simplified characters, which is not used in Taiwan. The user also disregards the fact that the event is being held in Taiwan and make massive deletions in the infobox. Here's his / her special contributions page : https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Contributions/219.85.3.67 so you can review what s/he has done. I have so far reverted all of his / her edits.

[edit]

Can someone please show me the discussion page in which the picture and description shown below should not be included in the Taiwan Article under the section of 'Political and legal status' ? I would like to clarify this since a user that is from the PRC (User: Whaterss) is preventing me from putting it in the article. I believe that this should be put in the political and legal status section as the Constitution of the ROC still states that the territory of the Republic of China is shown as below. I would like to clarify everything befor un-doing any edits and prevent an edit war from happening. I am well aware that discussions to prevent the map from being put into the infobox have been made. But I have not seen a discussion page that prevents it from being put within the article.

Area controlled by the Republic of China shown in dark green; claimed but uncontrolled regions based on the constitution of the ROC shown in light green.[1]

Vincenty846 (talk) 03:50, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The usual procedure when a content dispute arises is to go to the Talk page of the article in question. There you can attempt to come to an agreement about what should be included in the article and what cannot.
The map you wished to include has already been discussed at Talk:Taiwan#RfC: map(s) in the infobox. There are clearly a range of opinions about the map. Now that you've attempted to add it to the article (outside the infobox), as was even suggested by one of the participants of that RfC, but been reverted, you need to start a new discussion. It's possible a whole new RfC will be needed. But the local consensus on the talk page governs and, since nobody mentioned any similar discussion elsewhere in that RfC, it's quite possible that there is no discussion elsewhere that relates to this specific issue.
You could also ask for the opinion of the closer of that RfC, Alex Shih, an admin with broad experience on WP for an opinion on this issue. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 08:40, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
