Please don't add a word just because it happens to correspond to another English word in English Wikipedia. The free software movement is heavily biased to the United States and European Union, and as such, "free software" and "software libre" are the common terms for that concept. Todd Vierling (talk) 02:04, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

The word was added since it is widely used among the free software activists in India. I have added citation to the FSF-India website which itself regularly interchanges between the English word and the Indian word. Further, with the Indian government having adopted a policy in this regard I think US/UK no longer dominate this area Vikram Vincent 15:44, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia WikMeetup Bangalore 8

WikMeetup 8 Bangalore is scheduled for Sunday, 20 Dec, 2009 3:00 PM - 5:30 PM. Please ping me if you require any more information. Hoping to meet you on the meetup day. Take care -- Tinu Cherian - 11:40, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Free Software Movement of India requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guidelines for people and for organizations. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:43, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Hi, Vincent. "Reallyhick" basically gave the same answer that I was going to give. Best thing to do in a contested situation such as this is to create a user subpage which I'll do for you. You can edit the content at your leisure:

User:Vincentvikram/Free Software Movement of India

My suugestion would be to review WP:WEB and Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) to get a better idea of what needs to go into an article to establish its notability. Notability is the key factor in any Wikipedia article. Good luck and thanks for asking. I hope I was able to help. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 14:52, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Thanks for the help. Changes were made and the new page is at http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Free_Software_Movement_of_India Vincent (talk) 04:44, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Free Software Movement of India. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Free Software Movement of India. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:03, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Your recent edits

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 05:06, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Please use templates correctly

To place a template such as Template:Refimprove on a page, you simply type {{refimprove}} at the appropriate place in the article. That's it. Some templates will take additional parameters, either named or unnamed, such as {{refimprove|section}} (unnamed) or {{refimprove|date=November 2012}} (named "date"). What you most certainly do not do is copy and paste the code of the template, as you did in these 12 edits. Anomie 03:24, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Requesting to help me out in Wikipedia editing.

Oliver drishila (talk) 14:50, 27 August 2015 (UTC)Greeting sir, I wanted you to help me out with the symbol which I wanted to use for different subdivision under a single open curly bracket.

Thank you so much sir. It really helped me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oliver drishila (talkcontribs) 14:58, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

Moving articles

That a page would somehow be "easier to link" with spaces instead of hyphens in its name is not a reason to move it. The name of the article subject is hyphenated in the sources. --McGeddon (talk) 08:36, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Course coordinator right

Hello Vincentvikram.

I'm happy to meet you virtually. Vishnu and LiAnna both spoke highly of you. And Asaf told me some time ago about the good things happening at Christ University. I've been meaning connect with that program. There are, sadly, too few hours in the days.

Assignment Design Wizard

Thank you also for pointing out the page error at Wikipedia:Training/core/Launch Assignment Design Wizard. This is very helpful feedback. I've posted a note here on the talk page about the broken link. What this shows me is that not just one but actually several pages must be updated. So we truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention. My team is working on resolving the problem.

Unfortunately, fixing that broken link won't aide you. The Assignment Design Wizard is no longer available. That functionality was incorporated into the Wiki Education Foundation's new dashboard. However, Wiki Ed only supports higher education instructors in the United States and Canada. So, their tool isn't available to you, I'm sorry to say. There is an alternative though...

Course Coordinator Right

You've requested the course coordinator right through the Education Program Extension. That's excellent. Only you've done so in the wrong place, so I appreciate Helaine pinging me.

Here's what you need to do:

1. First, request course coordinator rights here on the Education Noticeboard here. (Please {{ping}} me in your request so that I can comment and support your request.)
2. Go to Special:Institutions and verify that your institution or program is already listed. (I checked already. It's not there yet. Please proceed to step #3.)
3. If your institution or program is not listed at Special:Institutions, please add it. Click the "Add institution" button and follow the prompts.
4. After your course coordinator rights are granted by an administrator, then you can create a course page at Special:Courses.

Here are two videos on Commons that might help you: Using course pages and Creating course pages.

Let's keep in contact

As an educator in India, you are supported by me and my team, the Global Education Program at the Wikimedia Foundation.

As the Program Manager for Asia, I will be your primary point of contact at the Wikimedia Foundation. And I hope that you'll keep me updated with your progress. I'm happy to help.

I encourage you to share your work with other global education program leaders by beginning a new section or a subpage about the Christ University Wikipedia Education Program at Outreach:Education/Countries/India. Also, consider posting updates in the education newsletter.

I hope this helps. And I hope to talk with you soon. You can reach me in these ways: email akoval@wikimedia.org · talk page: Outreach:User_talk:AKoval_(WMF) · skype: annakoval.wiki · facebook: anna.koval.737

All the best, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 17:51, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Dear Anna Koval (WMF)! Thanks for taking the time to give me a detailed response and also following up with the Wikipedia team. I really appreciate it. I did visit Special:Institutions but could not find the "Add institution" button. Is it enabled for users with a particular privilege level? Thanks again for your warm support. Vikram Vincent (talk) 06:17, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
Sincerest apologies, Vikram Vincent. It would appear that I've transposed the steps when I copied them above. Thankfully, the steps are listed in the correct order at Outreach:Education/Extension#Using the extension and mw:Extension:Education Program#Usage. And I've corrected the list in my original post here for future reference. The user group rights (course coordinator or course instructor) must be requested and granted first. I already have those rights, which is why I could see the button and you could not. After you have the rights, then you can add the institution and create course pages. If you search the ENB archives for 'course coordinator', you should see several older examples of requests for this right and can review them as models prior to submitting your own. It will be helpful for the community members granting the rights to know more about you and your program and your plans for education program work on this project: how many courses, how many students, and how much support you have to help the students locally at the school, for example, from CIS or WMIN. Links to any program documentation would also be helpful. It would be helpful for me if you would create a new section or a subpage about the Christ University Wikipedia Education Program at Outreach:Education/Countries/India and share this information there as well. Do ping me in your post at WP:ENB and I'll be sure to comment in support of your request. I'm happy to see this program start using this tool. The students of Christ University have been given projects wherein they create content for both English and regional language pages. Even after training, there are some students who are unable to comprehend the process and some problems do arise. Please unblock the IP address so that other students may continue to use the IP for their work. Thanks Vikram Vincent (talk) 11:36, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Unblocked, I hope

Sorry about that, Vikram. I've removed the autoblock, I hope. But it's been awhile since I was involved with autoblocks, so I'm leaving the unblock request and the category up so another admin can hopefully check I did it right. Bishonen | talk 11:57, 11 September 2015 (UTC).

Contributing or freeloading?

I have just spent some time tidying up User:Vincentvikram/Bachelor of education 2015 intermediate and User:Vincentvikram/Bachelor of education 2015 final. The layout of the latter especially was a disgrace. With my browser, Opera those massive URLs to hi:, kn:, etc. were making the page ridiculously wide. Most amazing were entries such as that for Dhaliya David where a neat, correct interwiki link लेअर्नि_सेल had actually been piped to a massive raw URL!

I also saw an edit summary "Vincentvikram moved page Think-Pair-Share to Think Pair Share: Makes it easier to link using underscore". Strange thinking.

Perhaps I am naïeve but I would have thought that the main purpose of a project such as this would be to teach your students how to edit Wikipedia. So, how much time have you spent teaching your students: a) basic things like wikilinks and b) and much more importantly, the difference between a student essay and an encyclopedia article? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 10:27, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi again RHaworth
Thank you very much for cleaning up the pages and providing all that feedback. Really appreciate it since my students get feedback from an expert who is not directly involved in my class. I am sure that it is a learning experience for both me and my students. I did not understand what you meant by "freeloading" in the title. Vikram Vincent (talk) 14:59, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Freeloading means using Wikipedia as a free host. There is a tendency with badly designed student projects for the students to write essays. The result looks very much as though they are simply using Wikipedia to publish these essays. Your project is probably not as bad as some that I have seen but clearly the students who chose MathematicsEducation and timelines and sequence charts should have been told very firmly to improve existing articles rather than trying to create new.

Incidentally, please announce yourselves at Wikipedia:School and university projects. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:42, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

Right! I am working with student teachers so the idea of the approach I have adopted is to get them familiar with processes related to the digital world. The initial discussions and online interactions were at Digital_classroom_Wikia In order for the labour that the students put in to be more productive, Wikipedia was chosen as the final platform. The strong rules were also an incentive. You may refer to Contributions by Christ University where we are running the world's largest experiment to get students to contribute to knowledge in the regional languages. Due to the large numbers we are working with, there are difficulties that keep cropping up and we are trying to come up with solutions to address them. Our ultimate goal is, by the students and teachers engaging with such processes, they are transformed from a teaching paradigm to a learning paradigm.
Thanks for the links. I did try to register myself on the Wiki course dashboard and had taken help to proceed further. So I disagree with the "freeloading" tag cause there is no freeloading. Thanks. Please refer User_talk:Vincentvikram#Course_coordinator_right Vikram Vincent (talk) 05:11, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Students making edits that require significant cleanup

It appears that you are teaching a course that involves students editing Wikipedia articles. At least one of your students is making edits that require significant cleanup. Please ask all of your students to read the tutorial on editing Wikipedia articles that I posted at User_talk:Ishitaabraham.

If your students are unwilling or unable to spend time learning how to edit Wikipedia without making work for volunteers, please ask them to edit articles in their user sandboxes. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:36, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Jonesey95! Yes, I am running a paper on 'digital culture and education' for teacher trainees and this is round three of work with the same group. Round one was on user sub-pages. Assuming that the students had picked up some skills in contributing to Wikipedia, I moved round two and three contributions directly to the main articles and ensured that student companions were assigned to each contributor. However, this has been way more difficult than I anticipated and I will have to refine my approach in the next iteration. I will do a round of clean up by the end of this month once the students are done with their tasks. Thanks again. Vincentvikram (talk) 04:14, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:54, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Query on how to write a proper wiki article

Vikram sir, i submitted the article and the reply i received was this :"Wikipedia should not be used for college projects. I see a lot of students from your college making trivial article like this which are critical analysis of random articles without any context of encyclopedia. If you are really interested in making meaningful contributions consider starting at WP. Women in Red" Ag.prachi (talk) 10:06, 10 August 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ag.prachi (talkcontribs)

Hi @Ag.prachi:! The message by @Jupitus Smart: is self-explanatory. The content being uploaded to Wikipedia by your classmates are not relevant to Wikipedia but rather to blog posts. Please read good relevant articles on Wikipedia and redo your content to fit into the required format. Best! Vincentvikram (talk) 07:42, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
@Ag.prachi: It would have been without any context for the encyclopedia. We don't want critical analysis of essays that are your original research as it is against our policies and not encyclopedic. I am unable to find the article you refer to, as you must have submitted it from another account. If this is your college project, tell your teacher that this cannot be done as it is against Wiki policies, and that you would much rather create an article about some other subject. I can anyway assure you that none of your friend's articles will not be accepted as well, and therefore probably nobody will end up gaining . Jupitus Smart
Vincentvikram, are you the teacher who assigned this project. Jupitus Smart 08:25, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
It seems you indeed are going by your talk page. I am really interested in knowing what are the expected outcomes of this project and what was the question put forward to the students - mainly to see if I can suggest the same to my friends in academia. I suggested WP:Women in Red as all the articles I evaluated were by female students who were graduating in English. I therefore felt that they could contribute to this project, as Wikipedia has a huge shortfall of articles on women. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by nationality/India has a list of articles we want. @Ag.prachi:, you could make one from those. Jupitus Smart 08:32, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
@Jupitus Smart: I am not the teacher for this batch of students though I did help with a training programme. I will try to explain the process to the concerned teacher. Thanks! Vincentvikram (talk) 10:34, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
Good luck with the laudable initiative. Jupitus Smart 10:59, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

Supporting Indian Wikipedia Program resource distribution

In 2017 - 2018, the Wikimedia Foundation and Google working in close coordination with the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Wikimedia India chapter (WMIN) and user groups will pilot a program encouraging Wikipedia communities to create locally relevant and high-quality content in Indian languages. This program (Code name: Project Tiger) will:

(a) Support active and experienced Wikipedia editors through the donation of laptops and stipends for internet access and
(b) Sponsor a language-based contest that aims to address existing Wikipedia content gaps.

The objective of the program is to provide laptops and internet stipends for existing editors who need support to contribute more actively. 50 basic model Acer Chromebooks and Internet stipends for 100 contributors are available for distribution. Provided resources are the sole property of the beneficiaries and should be used for the betterment of the movement.

If you're an active Wikimedian, and interested to receive support from this project, please apply. It will take around 10 minutes of your time, and will ask descriptive questions about your contribution to Indic Wikimedia projects.

Hello, Vincentvikram. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
