iron inlay?

[edit]

Could you comment on this edit? Are you saying we are mistaken about the nature of the inscription? Note that you changed "silver" to "iron" in the article text, but not in the infobox, creating a self-contradictory situation. Since you seem to be an expert on the topic, your knowledge would be greatly appreciated. --dab (𒁳) 10:54, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dbachmann. I'm new to editing in Wikipedia so I have not quite gotten used to the finess of it yet. My Sæbø sword edit (silver -> iron) was my first. I will try to comment my edit, and make som further clarifications. Vegard Vike (talk) 13:45, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the unimus.no link. But are we sure this is our sword? I find it strange that the blade inscription is not mentioned in the artefact description. --dab (𒁳) 12:14, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the museum number is verified in Loranges publication from 1889 with a detailed drawing of the same sword, he depictes it as table IV "...Haugfundet Sværd fra Sæbø i Hoprekstad, Vik i Sogn B. M. No. 1622 ...Indskriften paa den ene Side er med Runer og læses av Professor Stephens som: "oh þurmuþ" (Thormod eier), idet Hammermærket her bruges som Runetegn for Thor". In addition Jan Petersens (1919 p.66-77) also describes the sword from Sæbø with the number B 1622, and goes on to explain that it is unusual by having an inscription in runes as opposed to the usual latin inscriptions. Both Lorange (1889) and Stephens (1884) corroborates the catalogue text as to both the name of the find place, and the year of the discovery 1825. The find context of the sword, together with an axe and a horse bit in a grave mound, is also mentioned by Lorange. Vegard Vike (talk) 18:05, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Viking Age arms and armour

[edit]

Hei Vegard!
