Please do not use Wikipedia for affiliate marketing, such as you did in the article Palm Springs, California. This is contrary to the guidelines on external links and immediately suggests that you may have a conflict of interest. Feel free to take a look at the five pillars of Wikipedia policy to learn more about this project and how you can make a positive impact. Users who continue to use Wikipedia for affiliate marketing are likely to result in a block. Thank you. Zefr (talk) 01:48, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am a new user and was attempting to get familiar with the tools. This was something I thought was a good way for me to contribute and get my first edit. The external link message by Wikipedia clearly stated it was blocked from having any benefit to the website for marketing purposes. The link did not mention any business name or affiliate. It simply was a link to a local guide and was completely relevant in the section. I'll read the guidelines you sent. Thank you!
You chose a user name easily associated with commercial intent, such as the company name of the edit reverted, Poolside Vacation Rentals Inc. This catches the eyes of administrators who may ask you to start over with a neutral user name. Zefr (talk) 02:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to start over with a neutral user name myself. Is there a way to delete my user name and/or account? I did not realize my intention were being judged based on my user name.

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of name and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.
Despite your comments above, you selected a promotional username and spammed Wikipedia with your first edit. Both are contrary to policy. Please read the block notice very carefully. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:04, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This was not my intent and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. The user name is one i use quite frequently and I understand how it could look be related to a business. However, I was not intending or did I realize that Wikipedia could be used for promotional use. I'm imagining this is common given the reaction. Can you help with deleting my account all together?

We do not delete accounts because the edits you have made must be attributed to the account that made them. This is for legal reasons. If you do not wish to appeal your block, and no longer wish to edit Wikipedia, then simply stop editing. If you want to edit in accordance with our policies and guidelines, then follow the instructions above to request an unblock and a rename. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:21, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
