Thanks for your critiques and posting the link under Unlocking Clave facebook page. I have just joined your page.
As a matter of fact, the Salsa Beat Machine began its life counting four beats per clave, but following a very long discussion and many requests for users, I have come into conclusion that 8 beats per clave is more commonly accepted, though both are valid as you mentioned. I really like your comments and I will create a blog post about these differences and link to it from the main page. That's a great idea. I am now working on an interactive online course, based on the Salsa Beat Machine and other software I created. The idea is to make it easy for new comers to get familiar and comfortable with Salsa Music while giving them an opportunity to evaluate themselves and their progress as they go. If you are interested, I will give you a beta user so you could start looking around and I am sure you will have wonderful feedback regarding the terms and the overall syllabus of the course. hi Uri, While many North American drummers count eight beats per clave, that is gradually changing. The new instructional books reflect this. Eighth notes are still often used, but the cut-time (2/2) time signature is used more and more. This puts the notation in its correct context of four beats per clave. In terms of music theory, and in terms of how the music is felt, four beats is correct, and eight beats incorrect. For use in an encyclopedia (even an online encyclopedia such as Wikipedia), the material needs to be as correct and precise as possible. As for your online course, it's your call, but I recommend using the same standards. Your purpose after all, is to educate. One way to reconcile the many requests you received, with the correct metric structure, is to sound eight divisions, but use the correct count: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
