Re: Welcome

[edit]

Thank you very much for the warm welcome! I am pleased to be part of the Wikipedia community and looking forward to contribute as much as I can to this website. However, I have a question. I am very interested in the U.S. Congress and I have seen many pages of current U.S. Senators who have "served with: _____ ". It looks really bad and was wondering, how I can create a template, like the on that has "Political Offices" UnitedStatesIndia 02:05, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I follow. Can you give me an example of one of the articles that looks bad? —Wknight94 (talk) 03:20, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:MCCASKILL.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MCCASKILL.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image:MCCASKILL11.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MCCASKILL11.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. tomf688 (talk - email) 00:17, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:BLACKMUNSCOTUS.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BLACKMUNSCOTUS.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:06, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:REAGANWH.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:REAGANWH.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:BLACKMUNSCOTUS.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. -- SteinbDJ · talk · contributions 22:02, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Over 100 edits to succession boxes today

[edit]

Please, could you explain the rationale here for over one hundred edits to succession boxes, from this edit at 00:01 through this edit at 03:16, 16 March 2007 (UTC), which may need to be reversed? Thank you. — Athænara 06:50, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Massive Edit Related
"Hi, I am editing U.S. Senators and whom they served with during their term. All these edits are legal given that it is their "political offices" addition. UnitedStatesIndia"   [20:17, 16 March 2007 (UTC)][reply]
In re reply (above) on my talk page: It seems to me that the "served alongside" information belongs in the Senate term section of each succession box, not bumped to the end as in your edits, so I'm asking about the standard on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Succession Box Standardization#Over 100 edits to succession boxes today. — Athænara 20:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The way in which you;ve changed the succession boxes is very confusing to people reading the page. Please stop.--Dr who1975 21:57, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dr who1975: could you comment also on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Succession Box Standardization#Over 100 edits to succession boxes today? (I repaired only a half dozen or so of these 100+—I see you've fixed far more!) — Athænara 22:32, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, I think I got them all. UnistedStatesIndia, if I reverted any of your non succession changes I apologize. I want to stress here that no one is accusing you of vandalism. For it to be vandalism, you would have to knowingly do something against agreed upon standard (i.e. if you continue to do it... you will be guilty of vandalism). In any event, I want you to know that I apreciate how you were bold about this; boldness is good, but the caveat to boldness is that once a group of users has told you that you made a mistake, you heed them. And I'd say a group of users has done so. Myself and 3 other users have been working reverting the edits to the succession boxes. There are wikiprojects, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Templates that decide these things... and one general tenate of the succession boxes is that information relating to that succession does not go outside the box. Any exceptions you see are just that... exceptions, not the rule. If you have any more questions please let me know.--Dr who1975 23:17, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree Image:COLEMAN SENATORS.jpg

[edit]
An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:COLEMAN SENATORS.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. Please go to its page for more information if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Bridgeplayer 21:34, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's listed because it's being used to identify the senator, not as critical commentary on the television program (as stated is required in the fair use template you tagged it with). You can't use a fair use image from a television program to identify the individuals on the screen, only to illustrate the television program or discuss it. Leebo T/C 19:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Leebo, please take another look at the fair use policy. I believe your interpretation is in error; other uses besides critical commentary are allowed. -Pete 01:51, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Improperly used TV screenshots

[edit]

Hi, can I ask why you're still uploading and improperly using television show screenshots to identify the individuals on the screen? I told you earlier today that you can't do that, and I expected you to discuss it rather than going right on uploading more. Please discuss this. Leebo T/C 00:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please understand, you can upload TV screenshots, but only if they are being used to discuss or illustrate the TV show - not the people on the TV show. Leebo T/C 00:32, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:LUGAR NUNN.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:LUGAR NUNN.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Tom (talk - email) 02:32, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, I have tagged most of your fair use images for deletion for lacking fair use rationale and adequate sourcing. See your upload log for all tv-screenshot images tagged for deletion. --Tom (talk - email) 02:52, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Your recent edits to the Ron Wyden page contain no edit summaries, which makes it difficult to understand what your intentions are. This would be merely unsociable if the edits were benign. Removing a perfectly good photograph without explanation, though, is not acceptable. -Pete 23:18, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warning regarding false image sourcing

[edit]

The images you and User:Dhwani1989 are uploading are quite blatantly from some sort of news media database, judging by the fact that you both refuse to directly link to the pages they appear on. You MUST provide a DIRECT link to the pages you are obtaining these images from, that WORKS and is LIVE (i.e. http://webb.senate.gov/newsroom/gallery/030507_Podium.cfm). While websites change often and pages are deleted, these are clearly current images, and if you cannot provide direct and clickable links to where these images are appearing, that is simply unacceptable. These images may be producing possible legal problems for Wikipedia, unless you can prove otherwise by providing accurate links for all of these images. Do not remove the "no source" notices unless you provide a correct link to these images. If an accurate source is not provided within 48 hours, they will be deleted. Furthermore, if you continue to upload improperly sourced images to Wikipedia, you risk being blocked from editing. Please help make Wikipedia a reputable source of information. --Tom (talk - email) 01:52, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alberto Gonzales citations, thanks.

[edit]

Thank you for your improvements to the list of people calling for resignation, on the Alberto Gonzales article, citing the sources for the information. I'll also recommend that you use the edit summaries for your efforts. Among your last 1,000 edits, the only ones with edit summaries were mandatory, caused by image uploading, or page creations. It will earn you appreciation and increase your reputation, and it makes it easier to understand your contributions if you use edit summaries regularly. -- Best regards, Yellowdesk 14:30, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries: It should be the case that when you edit any page, in your browser, right above the bottons "Save page" and "Show Preview" and "Show changes" is an box entitled "Edit Summary" where you have the opportunity to say, in 200 characters, what your edit is about. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:GOP DEBATE 1A.jpg, by Staeckerbot, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:GOP DEBATE 1A.jpg is a duplicate of an already existing article, category or image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:GOP DEBATE 1A.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:GOP DEBATE 1A.jpg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. Thanks. --Android Mouse Bot 2 04:17, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Summaries are helpful to your fellow editors and improve your reputation

[edit]

Greetings, You have contributed many edits to political biographies, helpfully adding dates, alumni informaation, and more. Your fellow editors would appreciate it if you added a comment on the edit summary for your edits, so we can understand what your addtions are with ease. The edit summary is at the bottom of every page, while you make your changes, in a separate "field." I humbly suggest you change your "preferences" for your user account so that you are reminded to add a comment in the summary before saving the new edit.

The preferences area I hope you might change is located at: Special:Preferences, and at the tab marked "Edits", and the line marked "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary." I think you'll find your reputation will grow among other editors if you consistantly provide an edit summary with your edits.

Flags

[edit]

Please stop adding these flags to biographies. These are inappropriate uses of images that unbalance the information in the infobox, and especially when you are adding them so massively are often used in misleading ways. —Centrxtalk • 16:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why do you think that misleading factoid information like "religion" should be put in these infoboxes? This is an encyclopedia, not a newsmagazine. —Centrxtalk • 19:12, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed - I don't see the purpose of the flag icons. Such a widespread addition shouldn't continue unless there's been a discussion and some consensus. Have you discussed this anywhere you can point us to? (Religion may be important in some cases, though…not sure if I agree with Centrx on that one.) -Pete 20:33, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In some cases religion could be important, but in this case they were added indiscriminately to U.S. politicians' infoboxes; i.e. not as a result of individual consideration and not to articles that are intrinsically related, such as articles about priests. —Centrxtalk • 21:56, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I concur about the flags. This was discussed before and I believe the general consensus was opposed to them. Personally, I think they are useless, distracting, and often inaccurate. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 21:01, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, here's the guideline: Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags. It specifically says we shouldn't use them to designate places of birth and death. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 21:15, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wholeheartedly concur about the flags. very distracting. Also, i agree w/centrx re religion. there's already enough fighting in the world over religion; let's not add to it. same sentiment -- some add religion inaccurately and indiscriminately; for religous persons fine, but otherwise where do we draw the line?Journalist1983 00:07, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:MauliDave.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MauliDave.jpg.

17:08, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Images you uploaded of Mauli Dave and Poonam Yadav

[edit]

Hi. I noticed you're unsure about Wikipedia's policies about uploading images. If you read the following, it should help you understand more about images on Wikipedia:

The image policy on Wikipedia encourages administrators to delete images if they meet certain requirements. Many administrators delete a lot of images according to this policy, so many new Wikipedians have many questions about it. Here are the most common reasons that a particular image might have been deleted.

  1. Did the image have a copyright tag? On Wikipedia, all images have to have a valid copyright tag. This lets us know whether you made the image or not, what its copyright status is, etc. Wikipedia:Image copyright tags will tell you all you need to know about these tags. If your image didn't have a copyright tag, just reupload it with a correct tag. I'd be glad to help you with this if need be.
  2. Was the image "fair-use replaceable"? On Wikipedia, an image is "non-free" if it's copyrighted and not explicitly released under a free license. (Almost all the images you find on the Web are non-free.) We can only use non-free images under a strict set of criteria. The first of these is, if a free image exists or could be created that could replace this image, then we can't use the non-free image. For example, a non-free photo of a living celebrity or a particular model of car would probably be replaceable, since the subject of the photo still exists and could be photographed by a Wikipedian. These images wouldn't be allowed on Wikipedia. However, if the subject is no longer available (because the person depicted is dead, for example), then the image might be allowed.
  3. Was the image "non-commercial only"? Wikipedia is non-commercial, so it might seem that we can use images that say they are free to use for non-commercial purposes only. But this is not the case. Wikipedia is a "free" encyclopedia, so it's important to us that anyone (even commercial companies) be able to reuse all our content. For this reason, we can only use an image if another website could also use the image, even for commercial purposes.

Hope this helps you understand. Thank You. - Bhavesh.Chauhan (talk contribs count) 19:06, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add unsourced or original content, as you did to Democratic Party (United States) vice presidential candidates, 2008. Doing so violates Wikipedia's verifiability policy. Image without license

[edit]

Unspecified source/license for Image:TerryMc.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:TerryMc.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 01:18, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:TerryMc.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:TerryMc.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hekerui (talk) 21:10, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:COLLINS SPECTER NELSON.jpg

[edit]
File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:COLLINS SPECTER NELSON.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:44, 8 February 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 20:44, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

UnitedStatesIndia, I have just deleted virtually every image you have uploaded (except those deleted previously) as obvious copyright violations. You have been warned repeatedly about this and you can count this as your last chance. File source problem with File:MN BLUE.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:MN BLUE.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. The article Poonam Yadav has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced article, No any reliable published sources. Fails WP:V

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. :-ChanderForYou 10:26, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Indian general election, 2014, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page INC (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A tag has been placed on File:DEM PRI MAY 1.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
