Welcome and introduction

Hi, Underlying lk. This is NOT some automated message...it's from a real person by golly! And this real person (that would be me), wants to say welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you've made an account! Thanks for joining; you're on your way to making some great contributions.

Because I've noticed you've just joined, I wanted to give you a few tips to get you started. If you have any questions, please talk to us. Any questions are fine, nothing is too silly (we've heard them all). Now, the tips below - hop on them - they should help you begin editing. Best of luck! JoeSmack Talk 21:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Yessss! You made an account! Totally sweet!
  • Anybody can edit; just go to an article and edit it. Be Bold, but please don't put silly stuff in - it will be removed very quickly, and will annoy people. Besides that, you shouldn't feel nervous or anything about a good-willed contribution. If you're concerned, talk to us.
  • When you're ready, start your first article using the Article Wizard. You don't HAVE to use it, but for your first article it really helps. It should be about something well-known, and it will need references. If you'd like more guidance, you guessed it, talk to us.

Good luck with editing; please drop me a line some time on my own talk page.

Once again, welcome to the fantastic world of Wikipedia!

--JoeSmack Talk 21:08, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

P.S. If you just feel like poking around, Wikipedia:Help is a good place to start. :)

Sure did! Welcome, and let me know if there is anything I can do. I think you'll find that people can be ridiculously helpful around here. :) JoeSmack Talk 21:16, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
Hi. I was just on Joe Smacks talkpage at about the same time as you and saw your unsigned message. What you do is - every time you write something, follow it with 4 of these things ~ and wiki will automatically sign and date your edit for you. Stellenbosch to bid for Wikimania 2012!

Hi Underlying lk!

The nascent South African Wikimedia chapter has decided to bid to host Wikimania in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012. This would be the first Wikimania in South Africa, and would be a great advertisement for our country. Please take a look at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Stellenbosch. If you can add to the discussion, please do. If you feel that you are able to do anything to help, please join the Wikimedia South Africa mailing list and let us know. Even simple messages of support are valued!

Best regards,

David Richfield

Crete Eyalet - Crete Vilayet

Nice you created Crete Eyalet and included an infobox. I did create Crete Vilayet and included an infobox. Unfortunately the eyalet article was renamed and the vilayet content added to the renamed article. Now there is one infobox talking of "province", and for sorting out the merge there is a hatnote telling the reader that Crete was a province and later saying it was an eyalet and vilayet. I vote for reversal: Talk:Ottoman Crete // GRprefectures-have-been-dissolved (talk) 01:35, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Reply to your comment

Hi

I have replied to your comment on my talk page at the Talk:Argentina page

I appreciate that you were correctly removing material for inclusion on the sub-pages. We need to simply gain consensus on what, if anything, should be replaced in the Argentina page in summary.

Argentine cutbacks

Hi, Underlying lk:

Please understand that I restored many of the cuts because it was pertinent information, and because readers were probably accustomed to the (approximate) layout you found, which had arrived at following discussions about a year ago.

Some sections (especially the Ethnography, and the Economy and Economic History portions) were clearly repetitive, and please note that I adopted your "Environment" heading, which is an excellent recap of the climate-flora-and-fauna sections. Your moving "Science and Tech" to "Economy" was perfect, as was moving the Media section to "Culture." All common-sense changes.

You may notice that tha article is still around 12k shorter than it was when you found it. Perfect, considering it is a big country, with a lot of cultural and natural variety (and a lot of drama, God knows).

Thanks again for your interest in Argentina.

I have added further comments on the Talk:Argentina page Chaosdruid (talk) 22:27, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
As a matter of interest, what is the DYK tool you are using ? At the moment I have to cut parts out and put them in a sandbox page to see how big they are. That's using the "Page size" tool in the toolbox on the right of the screen. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:21, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for that! I use prosesize for my normal copy-editing drive page sizes (lol quite a mouthful) but that looks like it adds some useful info. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:42, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Off for a few hours

Hi

Unfortunately I have to retire to bed, it's 00:30 here, so will have a look tomorrow and then we can see where we are. I moved the economics section from the talk page to User:Chaosdruid/Argentina/Changes page. Hopefully it will all fall into place over the weekend.

Thanks for you guys taking it all so calmly :¬)

Goodnight Chaosdruid (talk) 00:30, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

I am just in the middle of a massive copyedit on Aldo Moro - probably not free for about an hour and a half I am afraid. I understand from your last message that there was a problem with the economics section I pasted into the User:Chaosdruid/Argentina/Changes page. Was that already edited by Sherlock? If so, and there are no major differences can we carry on with that one? Chaosdruid (talk) 17:28, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
It seems to me that most of Sherlock's changes involved reducing the history subsection (which wasn't particularly large to begin with) and, for some reason, completely removing the transportation section. So I'd rather we used the current version, and trim the superfluous or repetitive parts from that one.--LK (talk) 17:35, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
OK - just delete the stuff I added and add the section from the Argentina page. I will be with you as soon as I can. Chaosdruid (talk) 17:45, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
I have finished on that Moro article, but now it is a bit late as I have to have my food. I will be back on in half an hour or so. Chaosdruid (talk) 20:32, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

HDI numbers

Underlying lk:

Thanks for keeping an eye on List of countries by inequality-adjusted HDI. Rest assured that my intent was not one of vandalism in any way.

I'd like to refer you to the source of the table itself, the 2010 UN Human development Report. If you'd scroll down to the bottom of page 152 (pg. 10 on the pdf reader), you'll find that the figures I added were the correct ones.

It's worth noting that the user who created the article is Chilean. I'd assume a mere oversight, but he (or she) actually took the trouble to recalculate the "percentage loss" and "change in rank" (which can't be accidental). The animosity of some Chileans towards Argentina is, unfortunately, something you'll get used to if you contribute to articles about Argentina for long enough (and vice-versa, though in fewer cases). I prefer not to bring this up to the editor that did it, and think it might instead be best to just double-check what he edits.

Write me back with any questions.

Regards, 98.166.201.254 (talk) 07:29, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for waiting.
It's no secret that misprints do occur, and these often slip by unnoticed until the published releases a reprint of the report, and this was indeed the case.

Draft of Argentina changes

Hi

I did hang around for you the other night but I guess you had gone by the time I finished.

Anyway I have spent a few hours on it and I think you should go and look to see if anything further can be done, or if that will do for now. User:Chaosdruid/Argentina/Changes

I have managed to trim 740 off it. Chaosdruid (talk) 18:54, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

If he hasn't responded after a couple of hours then we should just put it in as he did say he would trust us to make the necessary changes, I would prefer to give him the courtesy of at least having a look first though, it will help keep the peace :¬)
Once that is in there we can copy the culture section over and get out our scalpels and hacksaws ! (you can reply here as its on my watchlist) Chaosdruid (talk) 19:11, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi, Underlying LK:
I added my proposed changes to the Economy section. I feel these would say more with fewer words, and stick to the critical turning points while still leaving in the most important recent developments (readers would be referred to Economic history of Argentina for any further curiousity they may have on the subject). I'd leave out the IAPI poster, because it is an anachronism that had a noteworthy but fleeting effect on the history (it was dissolved in 1956, and never returned). The British investment in port facilities and rail networs from 1876 to 1914, on the other hand, were a transforming experience that continues to shape the economy today. The nation's population largely spread out along the rail lines, and these and other British investments made the possible much of what drives the nation's economy to this day (particularly where its export profile is concerned).
I added mention of the Leloir Institute to the sci-tech section, but believe that the two historical images, plus that of the satellite (which by Argentine standards, was a milestone achievement), would recap the section's main points better.
Let me know if anything else occurs to you.
Thank you for all your effort, Sherlock4000 (talk) 21:57, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
I think you may be on to something. Post your changes on the User:Chaosdruid/Argentina/Changes page, and when you do, please move Eugenio Zanetti from the list of Academy Award-winning composers (under "Cinema") to the "Architecture, sculpture and pinting" section, since the man won an oscar for his set designs (perhaps renaming the latter section to "Architecture and Fine Arts" would be nice).
I look forward to your creation.

Hi

I am just taking a food and coffee break but will be back in about 30-40 mins.

If you ever need an article copy-editing you can post more urgent requests here :- Wikipedia:WikiProject_Guild_of_Copy_Editors/Requests

I'll be back! (in a bit lol)

Chaosdruid (talk) 22:59, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

I got as far as "Demographics" and will continue from there tomorrow as it is a little late and I need to get to bed :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 04:07, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
I have a bit of bad news to tell you. I discovered a lot of plagiarism and blatant cut & paste on the Uruguay article.
I am a little upset as I spent hours copyediting it.
I suggest you have a look at the refs and follow them to see how much has been copied, if you are too busy to do that you could identify who was most responsible for the work on the article and contact them. Failing that I suggest that a lot of the material is removed, in particular any which seem to violate copyright.
Chaosdruid (talk) 22:38, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
While the US docs may well be, the material is refd and may not be. For example UNESCO material is copyrighted except for "personal, non-commercial use." [1] and the US doc [2] cites "[2655] UNESCO, Education for All: Year 2000 Assessment, (Paris, 2000) [CD-ROM]". That would cover usage in the US docs as they were non commercial, but I am not sure if it would be ok using it on here as wiki can be copied for commercial use.
It may need some going through to determine which, if any, are copyvio. Chaosdruid (talk) 23:12, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
I did put on the Talk:Uruguay page that they are exact cut and pastes of the sentences, no attempt to even reorder the words - sorry I forgot to put that here for you to read (oh I just read my prev post and I did put that lol "blatant cut & paste"). I was just annoyed that such blatant cut&paste was in there, also am a little surprised that out of all the refs I managed to pick three at random and them all be US gov sources, lol thats my kind of luck! :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 23:33, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
I see that now - lots of US publishing, well I am definitely finished copyediting it, as for the other matters I leave them for the particular projects, page-watchers and high edit numbers contributors. I think I needed a coffee, feel much more calmed down now and will probably refactor my post on the talk page. I know the page is in your good hands for now anyway :¬)
Barnstar? I do feel honoured for the mention, is there one for "Someone who is not from South America but does appreciate that we are NOT third world and deserve more recognition - especially as we are the cradle of so much Natural wealth of animals and plants that we should be paid large amounts of cash to prevent chopping down the rainforests and help by kicking out those greedy buggers trying to exploit our oil, wood and minerals"
Lol that maybe be difficult to find :¬) Yup anything would be appreciated. I did start a series of novels on the Amazon basin region, and S.America in general, about trying to stop the rainforests being cut down...I keep meaning to get back to them sometime but end up on Wiki.
00:18, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Lol - thx for making me laugh and the bstar :¬)
No, it was definitely not a coincidence that I said coffee, I had also just eaten a bar of chocolate, though I pretend I do not know what it was used for in the past ;¬) I also enjoy beef, and for some reason corned beef although it is seen as a lower grade product I find it really enjoyable, esp with piccalilli. One of the things that fascinated me years ago were the "Big brother" and "Little brother" stories from the Kogi. I should check out the Wikipages on them ...
Anyway time for another coffee lol Chaosdruid (talk) 00:51, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

OMG, wish I had never looked now lol...Do you read or speak any South American language? (or Spanish or Portuguese) [3]

The article is in need of some TLC and refs. I will put it on my list of things to do... Chaosdruid (talk) 01:33, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Well it is mainly to do with the spelling of the name of the tribe. If I have been spelling it incorrectly then I should amend my brain to the correct one. The problem is that the mainly used English spelling seems to be Kogi, then there is the Kogui mentioned in that document, and the Koguis that seem to be used by the U.S. army and has been adopted as the third most popular.
A pair of them could be correct, the Kogui may be correct (I am a Kogui) while the US spelling could just be the army adding and "S" as a plural of Koguis (The Koguis are a). It could also be that the Kogi is correct, there are references to them as that name including websites that claim to have correspondence from them in that spelling, and it may just be spelled that way in Portuguese or Spanish or French.
Anyway I do not wish to bother you too much with that as you probably need to get back to editing :¬) - can you tell me what language that was in ? and I will start from there.
Thanks for taking a look though. Chaosdruid (talk) 16:57, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, that is superb! I am going to spend the week researching them (so may need some help later on) as they are an interesting set of people, only really heard of through the 1991 "Heart of the World - The Elder brothers warning" documentary here in the UK. THey captured my imagination when I saw it and have wondered about them and how they are doing now. I appreciate your help, that has answered a few questions and should help me a lot :¬) Chaosdruid (talk) 18:27, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Mexico article

I always assume good faith when typical, ocassional edits are made. In your case, your edit patern in the last 2 days points in other direction, not only in my opinion.

For example, it is clear that you have a double standard when removing information from the article Mexico. Sometimes you add the citation needed template and sometimes you just delete info justifying the "lack of references". I just can't continue to assume good faith once your actions become a tendency. Sorry, but that's very clear.

Although I know challenging info in an article is not wrong per se, your selective edits demonstrate a tendency to "challenge" whatever good thing is written in the article. Not exactly a good impression. Thanks. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 20:41, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

WP:V says that info "may be" removed not that it need to be removed. Also you're violating WP:ETIQUETTE. The preferable action is to add a citation needed template, a template you're used to add so you're familiar with it. Also per WP:V if the info is re-added you should wait for refs to be added. When the info you're deleting is causing problems and you keep deleting it AFTER you've been told not to, you're just creating an edit-war that could be avoided by following WP:ETIQUETTE and the preferable CN template. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 21:08, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, it is all I was asking for, to add the citation needed. AlexCovarrubias ( Talk? ) 21:19, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Largest cities and subheaders

Hey, just thought I'd make a fuller explanation here since I've reverted on two different pages now. I'm fine with the sort of standardisation of small compact city tables throughout different articles in the template space. However, I disagree that in something as broad as a country article that having a subheader just for a small table is that useful, and to me seems out of line with summary style and a concise table of contents. The MOS states that "Short paragraphs and single sentences generally do not warrant their own subheading", and as such I doubt that a simple table without any prose would deserve it. Anyway, that's the explanation. Cheers, Chipmunkdavis (talk) 07:42, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Ok, I can see why having too many subheaders could be a problem.--LK (talk) 07:50, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Azerbaijan template

Hi can you please remove the pictures from "Largest cities of Azerbaijan" template. There are already too many pictures in the main article, and these pictures in the template are not necessary. [6] Thanks. Neftchi (talk) 18:54, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Do we have to merge Silistra Eyalet and Özü Eyalet ? Takabeg (talk) 09:00, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Probably, since the Silistra eyalet proper existed for just a few decades. If the borders were largely similar (that is, they covered pretty much the same territory) I see no problems with that.
Bence faydalı. Takabeg (talk) 09:25, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Could be, but I can't read Turkish mate :P Cheers, LK (talk) 09:53, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
If you don't understand Turkish language, you can find names of eyalets and sanjaks in this article. Takabeg (talk) 09:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Requested more

Hi, Underlying lk. Do you know Wikipedia:Requested moves? I recommend you to use requested moves, instead of changing titles with only your POV. When you don't use requested move, other users can change title next day. For example, [7]. Thank you. Takabeg (talk) 15:28, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

POV map

Please stop with inclusion of POV map named "Hungary 1683.png". There are several POV issues and inaccuracies related to this map and it is rather example of political propaganda than of accurate presentation of historical situation. Firstly, there was no such thing as "Ottoman Hungary". This term was invented to make false impression about "continuity of Hungarian statehood" in the time of Ottoman administration. In fact, Ottoman administration was a clear denial of such "continuity" and Ottoman administrative system never considered that these territories are "Hungary" or "Ottoman Hungary". Other problems related to this map are inaccurate borders of some eyalets and generally inaccurate political situation in some parts of the map since map, while claiming to show situation in 1683, in fact show some borders and entities from the 16th century, not from 17th century. PANONIAN 17:26, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I did not accused you for POV. I simply said that map which you inserting into articles is POV. By the way, you gave me good idea about another map, so I will draw an new and accurate version of disputed map and I will include that one into articles. PANONIAN 18:44, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
That would no doubt be the best solution and a great contribution to the project. There's a terrible dearth of maps of the Ottoman Empire on Commons, especially modern ones. Good luck with your new mapping endeavour ;) --LK (talk) 18:47, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
As for Serbian Despotate, you are right about that: these territories were part of Ottoman Rumelia Eyalet, so that eyalet should be listed as predecessor state instead Serbian Despotate. PANONIAN 18:48, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Little help?

I need little help with new map that I creating. New map will show Ottoman Balkans and Central Europe in year 1683 and, while I was able to find sources for most borders, I am unable to find such sources for exact border between Silistra Eyalet and Rumelia Eyalet in year 1683. Article Silistra Eyalet claims that "In the 17th century, Silistra Eyalet was expanded to the south and west to include most of modern Bulgaria and European Turkey", but it does not clarify did that happened before or after 1683. Do you have some source that can clarify this? PANONIAN 09:03, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Article in German Wikipedia claims that eyalet was in fact expanded in the 19th century, not in 17th: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilayet_Silistra PANONIAN 09:09, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for maps of Silistra Eyalet. They were helpful. I finished my map now, so you can check are there some errors in it: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_europe_1683.png PANONIAN 21:48, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, I mostly based my map on map from Times historical atlas that show situation in 1683. Only thing that was not in that atlas are borders of eyalets, which I had to take from other sources. I compared these maps of eyalets with lists of sanjaks within each eyalet around year 1683, so I done my best to draw accurate situation in 1683. Anyway, if you find some additional sources about borders in 1683, please let me know. PANONIAN 10:29, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I see no problem that you create locator maps. My map is in the public domain, so you are free to make derivative maps. PANONIAN 05:21, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you so much for this barnstar AD! :-))) As for your question about the Sanjak, I think it's more likely to be related to the Greek city of Kavala.--LK (talk) 13:28, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for clarification. Keep up the good work!--Antidiskriminator (talk) 16:42, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Short-lived Ottoman provinces

Hi.

I noticed that you redirected Prizren Vilayet to Short-lived Ottoman provinces. I know that several users agreed that it could be done. I don't support such redirecting. Takabeg also opposed to such practice, as far as I understood. I propose to seek consensus on the WikiProject Ottoman Empire page first?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 08:22, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Edit summary

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Before saving your changes to an article, please provide an edit summary, which you forgot to do before saving your recent edit to Argentine economic crisis (1999–2002). Doing so helps everyone understand the intention of your edit (and prevents legitimate edits from being mistaken for vandalism). It is also helpful to users reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. --Jetstreamer (talk) 13:03, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Ministry of Popular Culture, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ministry (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).
