A few points on translation
[edit]Hi Anne, I didn't want to burden you with too much info at first, but since you're zipping right along, a few points:
- It appears at João de Lemos that you're doing WP:Machine translation (GoogleTranslate, Babelfish, or similar). While it's certainly permissible to use those, one must review and clean-up the rough machine translation. Those machines are nowhere smooth enough to produce a full page of proper English, so they need fixes for grammar, mistransalted words, etc.
- Thanks for annotating in the Edit Summary that it's a translation. Now that you've got that down, a few more steps to add in:
- At the bottom of the page, add, for example
[[pt:João de Lemos]]
; this will autolink to the Portuguese article, and vice-versa, so folks can use that left-margin menu to swap between languages. - When you're using parentheses to indicate a term/title in another language, like "the book was called That Cat ([O Gato] Error: {{Langx}}: text has italic markup (help))" rather than type "Portuguese", use the following code so WP recognises it as a translation:
{{langx|pt|''O Gato''}}
- On the Talk page of an article, leave a Template:Translated page marking, and links to any applicable wikiproject. For example:
- At the bottom of the page, add, for example
{{translated page|pt|João de Lemos}}
{{WPPORTUGAL}}
{{WPBIO}}
I know it's a lot at first, but you seem to be handling it well, and this will all help make your translations smooth, easy to use and track, etc.
Nice work so far, and I'm sure it's improving with every shot! MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:22, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
