England LSOA/MSOA Maps
Hi, thank you so much for all of the work you've done for demographics-related pages throughout Wikipedia. I recently came across some of your maps of ethnicity by smaller geographic units in England like LSOAs and MSOAs like in the White British article and was really astonished at the level of detail, so kudos on that. I've seen ethnicity data by LSOA or MSOA on NOMIS before and have wanted to make maps of them. I was wondering how you got the base map with all of the MSOA's on it to then shade in with the percentages. The lowest geographic level base map I've been able to find on the internet is wards (which are the units I use on many of my maps), but those are largely of 2011 boundaries that are now outdated. Did your process of creating the maps involve using GIS or shapefiles of some sort? Again, thank you for your work! Harshalrach (talk) 23:14, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Harshalrach Hello, and thank you! Yes, I create them via QGIS which I had figured out how to use. To recreate you basically want to go to ONS Geography (which handles all the MSOA/LSOA/OA boundaries for the 2001-2021 censuses, and other boundaries for the 1961 and 1921 censuses) to get your boundary of choice shapefile then port that into QGIS. Here for instance are these boundaries for 2021 MSOA's. There are also boundaries for the 2021 census for Northern Ireland as well, this can be found here.
- Would not recommend doing it by hand because it would take an exceedingly long time, but if you have the time check out this instruction thing by Harvard here which will basically show you how to connect the data up on QGIS so you can produce a detailed map (albeit there are more steps etc. to get it looking nice but it shows you the basics on how to atleast construct one). It's not as hard as it looks to get the hang of it!
- I'll eventually get round to doing more for Wikipedia but if you want to give it a go feel free!
- Hope this helps! Tweedle (talk) 19:17, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Recommended to either use NOMIS or the Custom Database portal on the ONS website for data creation as well (though I believe I included the former I think in the sources section for the image) Tweedle (talk) 21:48, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Tweedle, thank you so much for the help! I was able to successfully create a map with your tips for Romanians in the United Kingdom. If you don't mind, I'll start working on some of the other ethnic group maps for London and other areas, but nevertheless thank you so much for helping me learn how to create these maps! - No problem! Yes that is perfectly fine, I don't have much time recently to go through and do stuff for each pages so yes like I said feel free to go through and do it! Tweedle (talk) 21:46, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
