Please do not add commercial links (or links to your own private websites) to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. You are, however, encouraged to add content instead of links to the encyclopedia. See the welcome page to learn more. Thanks. --AbsolutDan (talk) 03:21, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I visited the cigarettes page on the site www.wikipedia.org and saw an interesting link to the site www.cigarettespedia.com.
But today I've noticed the above mentioned link has been removed.
As far as I know, following from Wikipedia.org rules, this site is not a commercial one, it contains interesting material about cigarettes from all over the world and I don't understand why this link can't stay where it was placed.
I think that this resource will be of interest to a large variety of visitors of cigarettes page.
I am convinced that the link on this page should remain and if you consider otherwise, then all other links must be removed.
Thank you in advance and I hope this situation will be solved soon.
Best regards,
Don Dang

In response to your post on my talk page, I removed the article not based on the type of website that it is, but the method it was added. It was spammed "bare" - in other words, the link was added by itself to multiple articles. Wikipedia needs more content, not more external links. There are countless good websites out there, many with information not found in Wikipedia articles. Articles would quickly become "bottom heavy" if we blindly added links to every website that had more information than the article contained. If an article is missing important information, add the information and cite it, using reliable sources. Adding bare links doesn't truly help an article much.

Please read this guideline which explains in greater depth what made the link additions in question spamming. Also please see WP:EL for information regarding external links. If you still have questions, feel free to let me know on my Talk page --AbsolutDan (talk) 02:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
