COI and notability[edit]

Hi! I'm just weighing in a bit here.

First off, I wanted to explain a bit about the conflict of interest (COI). Ultimately what COI means is that you're someone with a vested interest in an article topic, something that goes beyond normal fandom or general interest. If you were asked/hired to create an article for someone/something and/or are being paid by that person, you should disclose this somewhere, like on your user page and/or on the article's talk page. In this case it looks like you are part of a marketing/media company whose purpose is to raise visibility for bands and performers. Even if you are not paid for this service, you still need to disclose this somewhere. For example, I volunteer for the Library of Virginia, who generally just wants me to go about improving or creating articles on various Virginia related topics. I do use a separate account for this (it's OK to do this as long as it falls within accepted usage and you clearly mark the alternate account as such), under the name of Tokyogirl79LVA, where I posted a lengthy disclosure and explanation of my edits. This is a slightly different scenario here since it's not really a marketing thing per se, but it's close enough to where I can use it as an example. The main thing to take away from this other than what's already been posted in the other notes is that any conflict of interest, whatever small, should be mentioned somewhere just to be on the safe side, especially if you have a website that states that you perform marketing-type actions for people. (Even if it's free.) When making edits you need to be extremely careful, since it's easy to make something promotional without meaning to - especially if your job lies in marketing. Marketing people tend to be so used to writing in a promotional tone that you might not pick up on any words or phrases that could seem promotional on Wikipedia. In any case, the one thing that you shouldn't do is hide the connection. You haven't done that here, but I do feel obligated to say this because it's one of the most important parts of the COI guidelines and people on here get very skittish about that sort of thing. There have unfortunately been so many cases of over the top abuse that we're all a little gun shy on here.

Now on to the other things.

The other issue here looked to be that the article for Jouini didn't really assert how he's independently notable outside of the band. I already went into this a bit on the AfD page, but ultimately you have to show where he's notable for things outside of the band, since membership doesn't automatically give independent notability. This sounds a bit weird, but the reason here is that he doesn't inherit independent notability for being a member. (WP:NOTINHERITED) What I mean by this is that any coverage for the band only shows notability for the band. Jouini is mentioned in those articles, however the sources don't focus on him as an individual person, they look at him as a member of the band. Most performers don't achieve independent notability unless they put out solo work that gains coverage and/or the band gets so big that multiple reliable sources start looking at each band member as an individual. Even then it can be pretty difficult to show independent notability. Now I know that you said that other people might have articles and seem less notable, however as I stated on the AfD page, the problem there is that these people might be independently notable for other reasons (like Paul McCartney, for obvious reasons) or they might not pass notability guidelines and just haven't been detected and deleted yet.

Finding sources for these sorts of things can be difficult because as mentioned above, most media outlets only want to focus on the performer as a member of the band unless the band is extremely popular. They're driven by revenue created by clicks and reads, so they're less likely to cover individual band members unless they're of Beatles-like fame - ie, unless they're sure that enough people would be drawn to the article. Things like WP:PRIMARY sources (articles written by the band, a PR person, or someone else affiliated with them) cannot establish independent notability for the performer. They can back up basic details, but they can't really show notability. Now a lot of self-published sources like blogs, fan sites, or the like tend to focus on individual members, however in most cases those sources don't have the type of editorial oversight that Wikipedia requires of a source - they're pretty strict on those sorts of things and I've seen some fairly popular sites discarded because they didn't hold up. This makes the amount of good, usable sources pretty slim, unfortunately, but that came about by necessity over a number of years.
