NPP leaderboard bot is still running

[edit]

Although the October NPP backlog drive is now over, your bot is apparently still updating User:TolBot/Task 8/Drives/2022-10 New Page Patrol/leaderboard. Could you please make the bot stop updating the leaderboard ASAP? GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 14:21, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@GeoffreyT2000: Will do when I can SSH into Toolforge and disable it; sorry, I forgot to disable it! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 15:42, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done; thanks! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:49, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Tol Thanks for reviewing the articles. I have listed 3 reasons for creating this page. What do you suggest?

  1. The laws are not necessarily related to Women's rights in Iran, Religion in Iran or Human rights. For example laws related to
    1. Dogs
    2. Pets
    3. International Sports Competition
    4. International Travels
  2. I anticipate listing these laws under articles or sections related to religion, sharia or Islam to make a controversial discussion and repeated edits about Islamophobia. That is why creating a new article with natural view point seems necessary.
  3. There are other pages on Wikipedia with similar theme, and specificity in subject. For example
    1. Strange laws
    2. Unusual laws
    3. Unusual eBay listings
    4. Unusually shaped fruits and vegetables
    5. Controversial Reddit communities
    6. List of controversial album art
    7. Unusual types of gramophone records
    8. Unnecessary health care
    9. Alcohol laws in Germany
    10. Gun laws in Ohio
    11. Prohibitions in Sikhism
    12. Rabbinically prohibited activities of Shabbat

BecauseofThem (talk) 17:01, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BecauseofThem, the main reason I declined it is because of its tone. I also noted that I didn't know if it was an encyclopedic topic, but this was secondary to the tone issues. Specifically:
  • The lead paragraph ("The Government … of recent times"):
    • "plenty of laws that have caused quite a stir" is not neutral wording
    • "Here are some of the most controversial laws of recent times" isn't encyclopedic tone
  • "A widow only inherits one-eighth of her husband’s estate, but a widower inherits his wife’s entire estate":
    • "only" should be removed
If you can fix these, I think the article would be more appropriate for publishing. Also, while you're at it, please format references according to the punctuation and footnotes section of the primary Manual of Style. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 16:04, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Tol: Thanks. All feedback have been addressed. Page submitted for review. BecauseofThem (talk) 19:19, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BecauseofThem, another user commented and another declined the submission, both agreeing on non-neutrality of the title/scope. I would encourage you to abandon this draft and incorporate its information into existing articles. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:34, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I put the delete template on top of the page, but I cannot delete it myself. Thanks BecauseofThem (talk) 13:11, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BecauseofThem, I've fixed this for you; you used the wrong deletion template — if you want to delete a page that you (and only you) wrote, then you can add {{db-g7}}, and someone will delete it for you. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 14:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A bunch of pages to move

[edit]

You probably saw the close at Talk:Mid-American_Conference_baseball_tournament#Requested_move_23_October_2022; so there's a bunch of work ready for TolBot (list at User:Dicklyon/Conference_Tournaments but skip the redirects section). I'll be working on the consolidated list of redirects to create, too. Dicklyon (talk) 05:02, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Dicklyon, should the categories be moved too? Tol (talk | contribs) @ 15:51, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They should, but there's a different process for that (which includes updating all the articles to refer to the new category, since category redirects are not much of a thing). I can deal with the WP:CFD/S requests after the articles are moved. Or if you'd like to make a bot help with that process, that would be cool, too. Dicklyon (talk) 06:40, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright; no problem. I'll run the moves tomorrow. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 21:31, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Doing... Tol (talk | contribs) @ 03:51, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Done. All moved except: (all of which seem to have been already moved). Tol (talk | contribs) @ 04:21, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Now we need to make some of those redirects before I do large-scale link case corrections that might otherwise cause redlinks. I've been pretty busy off-wiki, so not really on it right now. Dicklyon (talk) 06:10, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem; I'm a bit busy too. Just let me know when you're ready. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 14:31, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tol, my list of redirects to copy is at User:Dicklyon/Redirects to move. A lot of them already exist, so need to be skipped; it's hard to edit out the blue-linked ones by hand, as I found when I started trying to do so, since you can't see the link color in the editor. Dicklyon (talk) 18:16, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Dicklyon: Alright; I'll edit out the existing ones and then file a BRFA. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 16:21, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a smart move. Can you show me how you do that filtering? Maybe I'll learn how to do such useful offline processing. Dicklyon (talk) 16:25, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: It's probably not the best way, but I downloaded the page as HTML and then used regexes (you can mess around with them on sites like Regex101) to remove existing pages (using HTML classes) and format it back into wikitext. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 23:02, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Filed BRFA TolBot 13F. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 23:40, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Approved; will run tomorrow. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 01:59, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There were some problems while testing before the run, and I didn't have time to fix them right now, but I'll get to this and run the task soon. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 05:58, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 04:56, 24 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, because you can get at the link color that way? Brilliant! Dicklyon (talk) 17:22, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes; thanks! Tol (talk | contribs) @ 18:43, 16 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Transbay Transit Center, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wired. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:49, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
