The Tea Leaf - Issue Two
Hi! Welcome to the second edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Teahouse celebrates one month of being open! This first month has drawn a lot of community interest to the Teahouse. Hosts & community members have been working with the project team to improve the project in many ways including creating scripts to make inviting easier, exploring mediation processes for troubling guests, and best practices regarding mentoring for new editors who visit the Teahouse.
- First month metrics report an average of 30 new editors visiting the Teahouse each week. Approximately 30 new editors participate in the Teahouse each week, by way of asking questions and making guest profiles. An average of six new questions and four new profiles are made each day. We'd love to hear your ideas about how we can spread the word about the Teahouse to more new editors.
- Teahouse has many regulars. Like any great teahouse, our Teahouse has a 61% return rate of guests, who come back to ask additional questions and to also help answer others' questions. Return guests cite the speedy response rate of hosts and the friendly, easy to understand responses by the hosts and other participants as the main reasons for coming back for another cup o' tea!
- Early metrics on retention. It's still too early to draw conclusions about the Teahouse's impact on new editor retention, but, early data shows that 38% of new editors who participate at the Teahouse are still actively editing Wikipedia 2-4 weeks later, this is compared with 7% from a control group of uninvited new editors who showed similar first day editing activity. Additional metrics can be found on the Teahouse metrics page.
- Nine new hosts welcomed to the Teahouse. Nine new hosts have been welcomed to the Teahouse during month one: Chicocvenancio, Cullen328, Hallows AG, Jeffwang, Mono, Tony1, Worm That Turned, Writ Keeper, and Nathan2055. Welcome to the Teahouse gang, folks!
- Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is a really nice way to make new editors feel welcome.
You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. -- Sarah (talk) 21:48, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
concern
Are you sleeping or not?--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:17, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I was concerned that you were not sleeping, working in wikipedia overnight :)
- I am not sure about that issue in Gandhi article. From common sense, it seems better to use descriptor and/or full name. However, in journal articles last name is used more often. However, journal articles cater to a specific population unlike wikipedia which is for general public.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:19, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks for the barnstar re Gandhi....it's a pleasure to work with you. Rjensen (talk) 12:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
'Kashmiri Pandit' article in my Sandbox
Hi Tito, have created a modified version of the Kashmiri Pandit article in my sandbox. Can you take a look at it & let me have your comments & suggestions. I have mostly taken from the existing article on the wiki page, and have added some concent to make the flow more continguous. Have also suggested an afc for Tulian Lake, which was turned down recently. Might need your help there too. --Ambar (talk) 09:08, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Street children in India review
Hi, i Just saw that you said to respond on your talk page. Yes, I am on Wikipedia regularly. I was just out of the country for the weekend and had no internet, but I will be on frequently from now on. KiaraDouds (talk) 21:23, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Reviewing Street children in India
No I'm not reviewing the page, I was just responding to the contributions that my classmate made, since we are editing Wiki as part of a class project. Khatchell (talk) 17:59, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Micro Macro etc
Which page of the book has the reference? That book is a good one, and has been used several times in the article. You can use that. I do not remember where in the article it appeared. Does the book really tell about his "dream" on microcosm macrocosm? I do not use AWB. Amartya does.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:27, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, it does. And this happened somewhere on the way of Almorah. So, may be this was mentioned somewhere in the wandering section. I am not sure. I dont know if Amartya is Linux user.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:33, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- You can of course send it to me, but I can not guarantee whether I will read it. I am not a good reader of non-fictions that do not interest me. Are you an engineer or would-be engineer, or some sort of software professional? (the linux-using people that I know all are engineers/related).--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:45, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- As a matter of fact, I do use original copy of Windows!--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:59, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

ayanosh review
I thought the nomination to delete the peer review of Bhagvad Gita was a bit over reaction. It looks as if the nomination was taken in a different sense than intended,it was not there to undermine your contribution as you have been a frequent editor there and i know that ;but the nomination was an attempt to further improve the quality of the article.Cheers Ayanosh (talk) 10:16, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree it is a bit over-reaction (I am not very sure how to withdraw the request)! After the recent edit dispute related to ISCKON content (see talk of the article) a large portion of the article has been deleted. You can see this edit comparison. There are multiple deadrefs, multiple section with incomplete/confusing information etc. We know that we have to revise the whole article. A review will be helpful when we'll finish these works! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 10:44, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
- I am not sure how helpful i can be with the specifics of the page but i will keep an eye on the page and suggestions and the general layout to help improve it. Thanks Ayanosh (talk) 11:07, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Swami Vivekananda IPA
(edit conflict)Tito Dutta's link which has an audio is a good example of how IPA could go wrong. ʂāmiː biːbeːkānoːnɗo isn't how an Indian Bangla speaking person would pronounce the name when speaking English. I don't do IPA but it is pronounced something like Sw(ine)-Me We-Way-Ca(r)-None-Thu(s) (ignore the letters in the brackets), with no aspiration. The IPA TD has provided is how a Bangla speaking person would pronounce it while speaking in Bangla. Yogesh Khandke (talk) 11:47, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) discuss/post in article's talk page! --Tito Dutta (Send me a message) 11:52, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- No TD SV is referred as an example, larger issue is of how to write names in the lead, which is very much for this place. I must point out that Indian English has its own identity and it has a certain standard - such as represented by professionals using it say in the media such as newsreaders, IPA should be based on the way it is pronounced by them.
