Tax revolt in critical care at a hospital near you
Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon member, once again time for the Collaboration of the Week in the land of Oregon. As always, thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving List of films shot in Oregon and Jim Paxson. This week we have by request Oregon tax revolt and not by request, the annual Hospital creation drive. For the later, I have laid out some sources here, and the remaining red links are all over the state, so you can find one near you! As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. May the wind always be beneath your wings. Aboutmovies (talk) 08:26, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Note: My attack
I'm sorry, but my best friend is Sapsltl and hammersoft deleted some photos I have been using for years. Well, what is wrong with 'non-free' photos anyway? if their costly, didnt someone pay for it and now they can use it anyway they want? I'm sorry, but i'm going mental. No, actually, it isn't. Sorry!
SH6 05:59, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- Policy states that Wikipedia can not use non-free media, and Hammersoft was enforcing that policy. Do not take your frustration out on him, instead speak with him in a civilized manner. Tiptoety talk 06:09, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
but i got the pictures from the articles, i never upload stuff to wikipedia. SH6 06:11, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- I have no idea what the specifics are here, and am not even aware of what images you are talking about. I simply stepped in when you crossed the line. Like I recommended before, you should civilly take up the issue with Hammersoft. Tiptoety talk 06:15, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Confusion
Hi..I have a confusion on this article : Promoter based genetic algorithm. The user who created this article blanked it, but the article seems to have references (at least one section). So when the user blanked it, I and another rollbacker actually restored the page.So should the page be applied for deletion or made to stay?
arunkumarcheckmate me 01:40, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- The edit should be reverted as you have done. Really the only time when a page should be tagged as deletion per G7 is if the blanking is like the second or third edit. Remember, just because they created the article does not mean they own it, and it would be unfair to the other editors who worked on the article if it was deleted simply because the articles creator blanked it. I would leave them a note asking if the edit was a mistake and direct them towards WP:AFD if they still want it deleted. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 02:13, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

The guy was already listed at WP:AIV when I told you about him, but it was backlogged and no one (or at least those active in WP:AIV) was responding for one or two hours on the reports listed there. It was during that time frame when he restarted his vandalism. BTW, he has vandalized from 202.70.50.x range (202.70.50.0/24) before. Here are the addresses he used in the past few days:

- If this continues and gets to the point you feel a rangeblock would be justified, go ahead and file a "quick case" at WP:SPI (located near the bottom of the page) and as for a collateral damage check. - No, he never ever used a registered name. He is always just an anonymous vandal who used multiple IP addresses. The only names we refer to him back in WP:AIV and some talk pages here are "anime/movie studio vandal," etc. They only sure thing about him is that all of his edits on various articles are the same (you won't need a checkuser to know it is him). - 上村七美 (Nanami-chan) | talkback | contribs 23:02, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

It's sunny out, quick take a picture!
Greetings to WikiProject Oregon folks. It is time again for another installment of as the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. A big thank you to last time’s guest stars who worked on Oregon tax revolt and creating hospital articles, we had 3 DYKs off the hospital articles createdd. This week is the star-studded affair of the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, starring Tiptoety. You can go out and take a picture, browse through Commons for an existing one, or search for a free one on the Internet, and in some cases remove an old request (or even add a request to an article that has no images). See the bottom of this page for some links to a variety of free sources. Again, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 23:25, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
I can't see that he has broken any rules re sock puppets. He appears to have posted using a normal dialup account woith dynamic IP, which naturally would change, and then realised that it's better to edit using a registered account, and since he created that account there are no more IP edits. Since there is no overlap, there is no sockpuppeting. Just a normal user editing anonymously, per wikipedia rules, then subsequently registering an account. Sumbuddi (talk) 04:24, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
This individual used numerous accounts to sockpuppet in relation to the Pete Townshend page and has been disruptive.--Occultaphenia (talk) 04:42, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- I think this says it all. The IPs Scieberking used continued to make edits that were controversial, and the way in which they were gone about were disruptive. That said, I agree that the editing is not an extremely abusive case of sockpuppetry, hence why the block is only one week. Tiptoety talk 04:53, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see any sockpuppetry there. The user is probably on dial-up, and has gone in to make what are admittedly less-than-optimal edits to the page, the different IPs are the result of that. After a while, he realises it's easier to create an account, and does so, and continues to make the edits, which I would think at worst should result in a 24 hour ban for edit warring. If this is sock-puppetry, then every new user to wikipedia who edits anonymously and subsequently signs up for an account is guilty of it.
- You've also blocked the completely unconnected user User:78.144.251.132, who has per the SPI and the behavioural evidence, nothing to do with Scieberking. Sumbuddi (talk) 06:16, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Also I think it's not really useful to block anon IPs when the user is plainly going to get a new IP every time he connects to the internet. Sumbuddi (talk) 06:20, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- I guess my point is they were using multiple accounts to edit war, which is a violation of the sockpuppetry policy, hence my blocks. As for 78.144.251.132, that was my mistake and I have unblocked it. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 06:26, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- On the edit warring, it's basically a two-way war with User:Occultaphenia who didn't make any effort to find a good source for his POV. Occultaphenia is himself a new user who responded to Scieberking by reverting, despite Scieberking (correctly) asking him in the Talk page for the article to justify himself. Occultaphenia reverted 4 times with unproductive comments such as "Page fanboys please don't remove- thats vandalism" before getting around to responding (though not in an appropriate manner) to the issues raised by Scieberking. To then be blocked due to the rather poorly put together SPI report by Occultaphenia is more than a little unfair under the circumstances. Sumbuddi (talk) 06:30, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
recently dleted article
Hello, my Article was recently dleted by you as being an advertisement, though I cna assure you it was not meant to be one, but was meant oto inform people interested in the genre that drastic changes are afoot with this company that is still 18 months away from opening. My question is, if I delete the company name, would this still be considered an advertisement?
Thanks --Kurtd71 (talk) 06:04, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Not quite. I suggest you read over WP:SPAM, as well as WP:COI. In order for the article to be hosted here, it must be written in a neutral and encyclopedic manner. Also, I am not sure that the topic itself meets Wikipedia's inclusion policy. Tiptoety talk 06:10, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

- It does seem to be lighter than the other letters, but I can still see it. Meh, oh well I guess. :-) Tiptoety talk 05:36, 4 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, Ottava; that was me. The code is using 'opacity' for the boxen and that could account for differences in rendering, which vary per platform and user agent. Some are not up on their being indistinguishable from magicness. I've other advanced techniques in-hand that use a semi-opaque screen over imagery and don't do this with the overlain text... and they are kewl. I'll have a next generation user page up for the holidays. Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:12, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi..I was just thinking, is there any way to upload photos from this site as these photos can convey a lot in Malayalikal section of article Karnataka ethnic groups. The site is the online edition of a newspaper by name The Hindu and after all newspapers are meant for for the public...So can this images be said as public too??? - Sorry, those images are copyrighted. Take a look at the bottom of the page, it states: "Republication or redissemination of the contents of this screen are expressly prohibited without the written consent of The Hindu". You may try emailing them and asking for them to send permission to use the images to OTRS. Let me know if you have any other questions. Tiptoety talk 17:12, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Sockpuppets may be returning to The_Indian_Institute_of_Planning_and_Management
Hi Tiptoey, Last year you had found a plethora of sockpuppets at The_Indian_Institute_of_Planning_and_Management. Here is the investigation. I suspect that some of those sockpuppets are making a comeback. Doing some random drive-by tagging for now. For example, Suraj845 has behavior very similar to those SPs. The smoking gun is filling the userpage with copy-pasted copyrighted info about famous people. In this case, the Dalai Lama which one of the earlier sockpuppets had also done. I have explained it in detail here and here. As of now, this is the only sockpuppet. But I just wanted to give you a heads-up before there is an avalanche of them like last year. It's be great if you could keep an eye on the page.
Also, FYI, I suspect one active user Wifione of being a sockpuppet of Mrinal_Pandey too. The writing style, editing style, arguments made, POV are all virtually identical. I had requested an investigation here and its eventual result was "possible". Makrandjoshi (talk) 01:08, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Zero-length block
It has come to my attention that my block log is reflecting poorly on me with other wikipedians. I am accused of being Uga Man, but that is a claim I deny. Could you complete a zero-length block of my account remarking that I am not connected to Uga Man, just the Southern Texas account, taking note of the misunderstanding clarified best by admin Happyme22 here. This request came about from this discussion. Thank you. --William S. Saturn (talk) 07:22, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

"The three-revert rule does not apply to self-reverts, reverts within a user's own user space, or reverts of obvious vandalism, banned users, copyright violations or libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced controversial material which violates the policy on biographies of living persons. Definition of edit warring Edit warring is a behavior, typically exemplified by the use of confrontational edits to win a content dispute. It is different than a bold, revert, discuss (BRD) cycle. Reverting vandalism and banned users is not edit warring; at the same time, content disputes, even egregious point of view edits and other good-faith changes do not constitute vandalism."Jameselmo (talk) 19:30, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
gersracing is quite welcome to put up his claim - if he can put up a good source and reference, and doesn't remove the properly sourced and referenced material and refrains from blatant POV.Jameselmo (talk) 20:27, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

PayLess at Sprouse-Reitz for your G.I. Joe's, brought to you by Troutman's Emporium and Frederick & Nelson
Hello WikiProject Oregon member, and seasons greetings. Here at Collaboration Of The Week we thank you for your efforts making Oregon better, at least on Wikipedia, and hope you are doing better than Joe's. Or, in the eloquent words of some marketing manager for another now defunct Oregon chain, Merry Christmas from PayLess... Merry Chriiiistmaaaasssss!!!
Now that pleasantries have been exchanged, thank you to those who worked on the last two collaborations, the Semi-annual Great Oregon Picture Drive, and Oregon Country Fair and Geoff Petrie. For this edition of the COTW we have Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County. The hope for the later is to fill in the last few images (5) and then see if we can make it the first NRHP list in Oregon with an article for every entry (need 27). As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 09:05, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Policy Report
A summary of the community's comments on our WP:Edit warring policy will be featured in the Policy Report in next Monday's Signpost, and you're invited to participate. Monthly changes to this page are available at WP:Update/1/Conduct policy changes, July 2009 to December 2009, and it may help to look at previous policy surveys at WT:SOCK#Interview for Signpost, WT:CIVILITY#Policy Report for Signpost or WT:U#Signpost Policy Report. There's a little more information at WT:Edit warring#Signpost Policy Report. I'm not watchlisting here, so if you have questions, feel free to ask there or at my talk page. Thanks for your time. (P.S. Your edit to WT:3RR, which was merged into this page, was months ago, but we haven't had much participation in the survey so far this week.) - Dank (push to talk) 03:10, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Merry Christmas
Dear Tiptoety,
Wishing you, your family, and friends a very merry Christmas (or whatever you celebrate at this time of year), and I hope that the new year will be a good one, in real life, and on the wiki. There is always a reason to spread the holiday spirit; it's a special time of year of almost everyone. ;)

Merry Christmas!!
Once again it is festive season, a time where festive decorations are displayed and gifts are swapped; but what about the true meaning of christmas? The true meaning of christmas is about the fight for freedom and how in times of hardship and misery, one person leads their people to freedom as a great warrior; for those who fight for a cause are warriors and those who fight for a worthy cause are great warriors. Such an act earns respect and honour; but most importantly, brings happiness to their people. So to achieve this as happiness lies in other people's happiness and greatness lies in how you deal with little people, we selflessly think of others in the hope that they will be happy this christmas.
Hi Tiptoety, have a very Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year 2010!

Clerk
Hi Tiptoety. I noticed a recent post you made about arb clerks, and didn't really think a whole lot more about it until this evening when another editor (and arb) asked me if I'd be interested. To be honest, I had figured that with only a years experience, my lack of history, as well as my lack of involvement in arb cases would preclude me from helping in this area. That person suggested that I speak with you about it. I have no objections to trying to help out in any area on the project, but before I jump in, I'd like to know how deep the water is. I'd be interested in any feedback you had to offer. Thanks, Cheers, Best, and Happy Holidays to you. — Ched : ? 03:44, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

- Ched, the "waters" so to speak are calm. With no real on-wiki voting or discussion there is a lack of drama, politics, or the like. Seeing as it could not hurt, I think you should throw your name in. The worst that could happen is we say no, and ask you to reapply next time around. One last time for 2009
Happy New Year to you, you WikiProject Oregon member! Tis the season for one last Collaboration Of The Week to get started this year. Thank you to those who worked on Gambling in Oregon and NRHP in Washington County the last few weeks. For the final COTW of 2009, we have Archiving Article Talk Pages and Mr. Standard TV & Appliance, Bill Schonely. For the archiving, we have a lot of old, stale comments on article talk pages from before 2009 that should be archived away, so that new comments are not added to things that either were addressed or not worth addressing. Personally, I archive anything older than a year. Anyway, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Adios. Tang Dynasty
Ooh: gorgeous picture of the Zion Narrows.
Since Hersfold is away on vacation and no longer a clerk, I wonder if you would be willing to help me with something, Tiptoety: where can I find in archives or page history the discussion and explicit final decision of the amendment to the Tang Dynasty case? I would like to review this information since I've volunteered to be one of Tenmei's mentors. The results of the amendment are summarized in edits to the main case page itself and in a post to Tenmei's talk page here. May I suggest that a link to the discussion of the amendment also be added to the main case page (unless it's already there and I just didn't see it). Thanks. ☺Coppertwig (talk) 19:01, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Bali Ultimate again
I asked Bali Ultimate to remove some remarks from a RFB, were he continues to tell editors that they lied, they are liars, etc repeatedly. He reverted my request.[3]
All of Bali's comments on the RfB main page [4]
Excerpts:
- Any mature adult suitable for the position you're seeking now would well have anticipated that lying and deceit to create marginally notable BLPS...You basically shat all over people who are doing their best...That you didn't expect a backlash is prima facie evidence that you aren't particularly thoughtful and you have poor judgement. It also says something troubling about your ethics, at least to me. 17:02, 9 January 2010.[5]
- Lying liars lie. You all lied. I don't trust liars. That's about it in a nutshell. 19:32, 9 January 2010.[6]
- The policy was changed on october 6...by the same editor who began the unethical and deceitful experiment on October 5. 19:50, 9 January 2010.
- He lied and played games, very recently. 19:56, 9 January 2010.
- You really aren't paying attention. I have no interest in good faith/bad faith, intentions, ideational notions, etc... I'm solely concerned in this instance with actions. The actions involved: Deceit, game-playing, baiting and the creation of terrible articles. Sockpuppetry and edits like this are examples of deliberate deceit. These diffs demonstrate mendacity and and a "deliberate attempt to deceive." [7] [8]. I'm willing to accept in your bizarre world that a lie isn't a lie, but it's not the world i live in.Bali ultimate (talk) 21:26, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Mass killings under Communist regimes
Please explain the reason of page protection in and the conditions of unprotecting Talk:Mass killings under Communist regimes. At the first glance, I don't see very raging edit war. Some amount of warring always present in pages like this, but was it really stubbrn, prolonged and destructive, so that you protected it without any warning in the talk page? Timurite (talk) 18:20, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think people can look at the article and see for themselves it has been protected. If you want me to leave a message on the talk page saying: "The article has been protected because of edit warring." I guess I could, I just do not see the point. Once the issue at hand has been resolved, you or someone else can post to WP:RFPP and request the article unprotected. Tiptoety talk 19:35, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Block of user
Hello. Can you explain the reasoning of your block of User:Brazilnode? They essentially made made 2 inappropriate actions before being banned indefinitely. They were a new user and had never been warned, save for a message left on their talk page, telling them that such edits are inappropriate. Let's just call that a level 4 vandalism warning -- even so, they only made one edit after that before being blocked: a response to the message apologizing and saying it won't happen again [9]. I don't see how you can label this a single purpose account after 20 minutes and 5 edits on RfA. SwarmTalk 07:13, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- If you could please provide that reasoning at the ANI. Cheers. Weakopedia (talk) 10:31, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
We don't report vandals to AIV without warnings because they're nothing but "needless bureaucracy". I've never heard of a vandal, who apologized for their edits, being indefinitely blocked without warning under the guise of common sense. Then again, I've never heard of an administrator, when asked to explain a block, respond with sarcasm; saying their action was "common sense". A civil explanation was all that was needed. Common sense told me that the "degrading remark" that cited an administrator by name was a result of them actually reading the RfA and making their own inferences, not a result of them being a sockpuppet. SwarmTalk 22:54, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- I apologize if my post came across cheeky. As for the block, it has been looked into by a few CheckUsers now and as such I am not willing to unblock. Please email ArbCom if you wish to pursue this any further. Tiptoety talk 22:56, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- I have no reason nor desire to dispute the block, provided you simply explained your reasoning, but using sarcasm and telling others to use common sense was not necessary. Thanks for doing so nonetheless. SwarmTalk 01:35, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Wadded editor panties
It may be "only an online encyclopedia," but is it necessary to establish so thoroughly just how snide volunteer administrators can be in response to questions? So, you hold wikipedia in low esteem. It's contributors in even lower or no esteem. An answer was not needed; a snide answer is never needed.[10] --IP69.226.103.13 | Talk about me. 06:04, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Couldn't find an appropriate knock-knock joke
A flock of sheep from the Soviet Union approaches the Finnish border in a panic, pleading to be allowed entry. “Beria [Stalin’s secret police chief] has ordered the arrest of all elephants,” they explain. “But you’re not elephants,” reply the Finnish border guards in puzzlement. “Yes, but try explaining that to Beria.” [11]
I too am fleeing an impossible situation, and I won't return to Mass killings under Communist regimes for at least 48 hours. It is impossible to add any content there without being reverted, and it is becoming harder and harder to WP:AGF.
