[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing) has been reverted.
Your edit here to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing) was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.idwpublishing.com/ip/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 20:31, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help me!

[edit]

Please help me with... I updated the external link on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW Publishing), as the existing external link was broken and resulted in a 404. XLinkBot reverted that change because the link/domain is on a "list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia."

What should I have done in this situation? Should I have replaced the link as I did? Should I have replaced it with a link to that URL at Archive.org? Should I have removed the link? Or should I have done something else?

Thanks in advance for your help. Timweston (talk) 18:34, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Timweston, and welcome to Wikipedia!
Don't panic too much about the bot reverting your edit — it doesn't mean that you're in trouble or that what you did was wrong.
Wikipedia has many guidelines and policies, several of which are quite long and can take some time to read and understand. As such, it's common for editors — new and old — to have their edits reverted. This is perfectly fine, and the way Wikipedia was built to work. You may find the explanatory essay on the bold, revert, discuss cycle a good read.
As the bot stated in its message, your edit was reverted because it is on a list of links that probably should not be included on Wikipedia, specifically in relation to Wikipedia's external links policy. There are many reasons for this, but you may find exactly why by having a cursory look through the policy or the bot's FAQ page, both of which are linked above.
In regards to what you should have done — exactly as you did. You could have removed the link (and now I guess probably should) however updating it is preferable. Archiving a link is also a good idea as it prevents link rot, however there are also bots that do that automatically if you forget.
If you would really like to find a link to put there, you can read the external links policy to find out exactly what is allowed and what isn't, but that's not a requirement. Alternatively, you can leave a message on the articles talk page to see if anyone else might have a better resource to link to.
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia, I hope you continue to make improvements!
N.B. I'm watching this page so if you have any other questions or comments, simply reply and I'll get back to you. I can't promise I'll know the answers (I'm not an expert either) but I'll do my best to help you. rbstrachan (talk) 19:13, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
