Wikilinking

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

(This even applies to infoboxes.)

Thanks, and my best wishes.

TONY, thanks very much! That makes perfect sense, and I'll adjust my edits accordingly. Timathom (talk) (COI) 23:51, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Teatro Avante

Timathom - I noticed this article you created for Teatro Avante. At first glance it looks like a regular article but after looking at it for a minute - I really don't understand what I'm looking at. What is this RAMP stuff? Under external links you put: "*Teatro Avante in libraries (WorldCat catalog)". All this to tell us the U of M has one little pamphlet telling about a play put on by these people? Is this WP:ARTSPAM? And on the talk page we have a giant banner. Looks like more SPAM to me.-GroveGuy (talk) 08:45, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

GroveGuy, thanks for you comments. You're right about the WorldCat external link. It didn't contain enough information to be very useful. I have commented it out. The Teatro Avante article was created using a tool called the RAMP editor. RAMP is a GLAM-Wiki project that is designed to help librarians and archivists get more involved with Wikipedia by letting them take some of the data they have already created and reformat it as wiki markup. The purpose of the template that you noticed on the Talk page is to indicate that the text that is being republished in the article has been properly licensed under CC BY-SA and GFDL. The only intention behind the template is due dilligence, not advertisement. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns about the project. Timathom (talk) (COI) 23:47, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
It appears to me that the template on the talk page has as its main purpose the promotion of RAMP. This would therefor be spam. Also, it seems to me that Teatro Avante lacks notability. -GroveGuy (talk) 23:58, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
Teatro Avante is linked to/mentioned in four other articles. The only parts of the template that refer to RAMP are the logo, the top part, and the small-print notice at the bottom. The majority of the text is about sourcing and licensing. Would it strike you as more appropriate if the logo were removed and the font unbolded in the first mention of "RAMP editor"? Timathom (talk) (COI) 00:20, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Just updated the template to make those changes. I can see your point that it could have come across as promotional. See what you think now: Talk:Teatro_Avante. --Timathom (talk) (COI) 00:26, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Focusing on Teatro Avante; I believe it lacks notability. Interwiki links do NOT establish notability. Only citations to the outside world count. There is nothing in this article that makes me think the real world notices Teatro Avante at all. The fact that there are 3.0 boxes of stuff about the theater clogging up the shelves at UM does not count. If you can't find some outside citations I think the article should be deleted. -GroveGuy (talk) 02:11, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks again for your comments. I'll work on adding citations as soon as possible. I believe Teatro Avante is notable (and the National Endowment for the Arts seems to agree). The article is a stub, but that doesn't mean its subject lacks notability. The goal here, in creating a stub-class article, was to establish a basic level of visibility so that others could add content to demonstrate notability. However, I wouldn't have created the article had I felt the subject lacked notability on a basic level. --Timathom (talk) (COI) 11:11, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Teatro Avante requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content or organised event, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. GroveGuy (talk) 09:46, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Teatro Avante, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an acceptable page. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item G11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this page is not blatant advertising, . Clicking that button will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. You are welcome to edit the page to fix this problem, but please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. As well as removing promotional phrasing, it helps to add factual encyclopaedic information to the page, and add citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the page will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. GroveGuy (talk) 09:46, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library: New Account Coordinators Needed

Hi Books & Bytes recipients: The Wikipedia Library has been expanding rapidly and we need some help! We currently have 10 signups for free account access open and several more in the works... In order to help with those signups, distribute access codes, and manage accounts we'll need 2-3 more Account Coordinators.

It takes about an hour to get up and running and then only takes a couple hours per week, flexible depending upon your schedule and routine. If you're interested in helping out, please drop a note in the next week at my talk page or shoot me an email at: jorlowitz@gmail.com. Thanks and cheers, Jake Ocaasi via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
