No longer underdog! As if we ever were. Drmies (talk) 03:14, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

While I agree with his assessment, I'm never comfortable with relinquishing "underdog" status. The SEC is to volatile to start bragging. Wait 'till November or December....let the record speak. Still, ya gotta feel good about McElroy taking the reins. Roll Tide Tiderolls 03:23, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Glad to do it. I probably owe you one, anyway. So many editors have helped me in the same way, I tend to lose track. I've seen your efforts while watching recent changes....keep up the good work. Tiderolls 17:20, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

User makes masive reverts to favor point of view to remove term "free software" to use only "open source".

Hello Tide rolls

There is a user "Yworo" who has been removing the term "Free software" as a valid description for the source model of software articles such as Ubuntu and the pages referring to its derivatives. You can check that here:

http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Contributions/Yworo

The term has been used without any problem together with the "open source" option until now.

His behavior is very similar to that of another user known as Chris Cunningham "Thumperward". It is very possible they could be the same or at least acting in coordination to push their point of view which favors the use of their(his) favored terms.

I did try to correct his edits and kindly asked "Yworo" to cite his sources. Instead he has reverted more than once my edits. Together with another user who openly shares the same point of view (KimDabelsteinPetersen) they have unjustifiably threatened me with the 3 revert rule.

Please have a look.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grandscribe (talkcontribs)

I must tell you that I lack the technical knowledge to offer an opinion on the content issue you have raised. I will say that engaging the editors you mention in your message would be your best course of action. Developing consensus is the process by which information is added to Wikipedia. There are other means of dispute resolution, but pursuing them would be fruitless without attempting to obtain a consensus. Maintaining one's composure during discussion is essential to avoid straying into an edit war. It would be very counterproductive if you were to get caught up in a situation that is easily avoided. What chance would you have to get your information added if you were blocked or incurred other editing restrictions? If my input here falls short of your expectation, please accept my apology. Good luck Tiderolls 01:07, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism

Looks like 68.96.170.78 is at it again. Could you block im please? Thanks. Jrcla2 07:04, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry...I had logged off before you posted here. I appreciate the compliment but I am not an admin. You seem experienced so you may already know about the most effective venue for reporting vandalism. As long as the vandalism is recent, ongoing and the user in question has been sufficiently warned, the admins that watch that board are very swift in their action. Of course, I will try to help wherever I am able so feel free to contact me if you have problems or concerns. Regards Tiderolls 10:25, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

McFadyen Page

I am the creator of a biography on Andrew McFadyen. Appears someone wants to have it taken down, but I believe only for political gain. Is there a way to ensure it gets protected? IP address on the edit attempt is 99.232.119.54

Many thanks! CheshireH —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheshire H (talkcontribs) 04:55, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

My first suggestion would be that you contact editors at the biography talk page to make sure that your edits have followed the policies and guidelines for biographies of living persons. These policies are some of the most strictly enforced for obvious reasons. If you are able to have uninvolved editors check your work and give opinions that support your editing that would help. Looking over the article I saw nothing that should be a problem, but I am no expert....try to obtain views from editors that have experience with biographical articles. The user that tagged the article made no comment at the RfC that was initiated by placing the tag. I would take that to mean that the user has no opinion. I do not understand why one would tag an article and then not comment on their concerns. I saw that you had posted a message on the user's talk page...that was the proper thing to do. Attempting to initiate a dialogue shows your interest in collaboration. Good luck Tiderolls 05:15, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

THANKS! Very helpful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheshire H (talkcontribs) 05:44, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Why start over with a level-one warning? I've given the User a final warning. Who then was a gentleman? (talk) 02:17, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm guessing the reason is I'm a mealy-mouthed editor. Tiderolls 02:26, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Heh.  :) Who then was a gentleman? (talk) 02:37, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Hmm... Fpadampunk looks like a vandalism-only account to me. Any opposition to me blocking him as such? – ClockworkSoul 02:42, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

I was going to say something similar about this edit. I think it was a step or three beyond "appearing to be unconstructive". ;) Cheers! – ClockworkSoul

I'm always hopeful that users are capable of finding some way to contribute. I'm often proven wrong. I've been wrong before...I'm old, so I've been wrong many times. "Unconstructive" seems tame in that particular instance to be sure. I've had the occasional user message me after a warning and inquire about the warning. It's given me the chance to pass on the pitiful bit o' knowledge I posssess on the workings of WP. It's led to some positive reaction. I hold on to that meager hope... Tiderolls 02:45, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps I'm just jaded? If it works for you, then by all means keep it up! – ClockworkSoul 02:56, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Nah...you're not jaded. I'm still learning. That translates to I must be more careful in my response. As I gain experience I hope to be more discerning in my approach. That's my hope, anyway :) Tiderolls 03:02, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

No, I don't think it needed any in-depth research, considering the previous warnings on the guy's Talk page and the type of vandalism he was doing that you reverted, it looked pretty clear, to me, but then, I tend to assume bad faith more than others.  :) Who then was a gentleman? Your revert on Pasta

How'd you do that? I've been trying ages to figure out how to revert edits by multiple IP's. Jeff M | Talk2Me | BNosey - 00:24, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Push the blue "back" button until the version you want is on the left column. When you puch the revert button you will take the article back to that version. If you're using HG lite the scrren appearances may be different as I'm using the full version. Hope that helps Tiderolls 00:27, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much Tide :-). Jeff M | Talk2Me | BNosey - 00:29, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Remember that if you push the "revert and warn" button the warning goes to the user on the right column. You have to be careful because that user may be innocently trying to revert vandalism and just missed a letter or two. They may not be responsible for vandalism and may not deserve a warning. I've made that mistake before...thank goodness the editor was understanding when I explained my mistake. See ya 'round Tiderolls 00:32, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks yeah but I did already take that into consideration, so it's just revert only yes? Jeff M | Talk2Me | BNosey - 00:36, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Unless it's multiple edits by the same user and they need a warning, yes. Tiderolls 00:38, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
You can always go back and issue manual wanrings if need be. Tiderolls 00:39, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Fast revert

That was one fast reverting you did to Pacific Place Jakarta. I wonder how you did that in seconds?--RuleOfThe9th (talk) 02:54, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Was it fast? My computer is old so it's difficult for me to tell. See ya 'round Tiderolls 02:57, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

It was. Faster than a blink of an eye, the blanked page was back in its original form. 202.47.69.212 blanked the entire page and replaced the content with :"ja ja what do you know about pacific place stupid" (at least that's what he said). When I checked back a few seconds later I saw the page was back with the original contents.--ROT9 (talk) 08:35, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

My question was a weak attempt at humour. My edit was made with the assistance of an automated tool, so I had a bit of an advantage. I was not trying to mislead you. You seem experienced so I thought you might already have knowledge of the situation. Also, many editors have access to this (and other) tools, so speed is not that important. If I miss seeing such an edit as you mention there are others about that will catch it. Anyway, it's helpful knowing you are watching the page as well...the more eyes the better :) Tiderolls 13:07, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I see that. It seems that you are a Wikipedia administrator, since you had the assistance of a tool. Anyways, I'm not that experienced. Cheers,--ROT9 (talk) 03:17, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

I am not an administrator. I'm an editor with granted rights that anyone in good standing can request. It's not a rank....just a means to execute tasks more efficiently. Tiderolls 08:01, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh. I always thought that you were a formal Wikipedia administrator, yet you're just an editor but with granted rights. Oh and tell me more about this feature in my talk page!--ROT9 (talk) 11:20, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your rivision to tidal power. I tried to revert a vandal but also reverted you at first. Sorry and thanks;)SchnitzelMannGreek. 22:43, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm positive your reversion was accidental. That's why I did not think it necessary to message you. That was one of the strangest things I've ever seen while using HG. The program should not have allowed your edit. I have (many times) hit the revert button without realizing that the version I was trying to revert was already changed. Thank goodness the system would not let my edit go through. Do you think we need to report this as a glitch? I'd be interested in your opinion. Regards Tiderolls 22:47, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I don't know. It's not the first time it has happen to me though. I've seen other prominent users with the same incident happening. So I'm not sure really.SchnitzelMannGreek. 22:58, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh I don't know. Hey, Tide man, do you happen to have a copy of the William March biography by Simmonds? The article needs a reference or two, and it's on GA review. (You know he studied law in Tuscaloosa, and his Company K is a great book.) Good to see you too, but I'm signing off--it's bedtime. Take care, and keep up the good work. Can you believe we have to wait until September before we can watch some football? *Sigh* Drmies (talk) 04:08, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't have that book. I'll do some searching...I have very few manual mainspace edits and would like to contribute to a GA nom. September 5th is just around the corner...patience :) Tiderolls 04:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
"Few manual mainspace edits"...are you a machine? I don't know if you know User:Alarob--he's gotten a rewrite of the Alabama article started (at User:Alarob/Alahist). A long time ago he and I were looking at that main article and were sad and disappointed, but then we never got around to actually spending time on it. Drmies (talk) 14:38, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Rob was one of the first to welcome me here. It was kinda funny. He expressed the hope that I wouldn't mind "an Auburn denizen" posting on my page...lol I gave him a "War Eagle' on his page out of respect. Don't tell anybody...I wouldn't want that getting around :) Tiderolls 16:58, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

You do realize...

You do realize I was joking, right? I was saying that his disruption on the WP:AN3 (which led to you posting on WP:ANI) made it more likely that he would be blocked sooner rather than later. The rollback was fine. -- tariqabjotu 05:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Of course, no worries. I took your meaning immediately. And don't take my reply on AN/I as sarcasm. I meant what I said...sometimes I believe I should stand aside and let the admins 'tend to business. See ya 'round Tiderolls 06:00, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Dethklok

Any time you see these kids adding the Tristan Peterson nonsense, it's vandalism. There's not a single reliable source anywhere online. It all started with a metal magazine article about Dethklok... the forum section began asking who each character might be based on, a bunch of fans said this nobody guitarist friend of theirs, and it's grown. the same twists seem willing to post it to every discussion forum, without any citation at all. No attempt to ask for citation has been successful. It's just twits having fun. Just revert and ignore. NO request for page protection will be honored either, I've tried. none of my business ...

... but I was just wondering why you weren't an admin? — Ched :  ?  07:44, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

The main reason is that my contributions are very one dimensional. I'm very proud of my "substantive" mainspace contribs, but they number less than a dozen. If there were some type of "AIV only" admin I'd self-nom in a heartbeat. I can pretty much guess what the "oppose" comments would be at an RfA and if I ever get to the point where my contribs would answer those concerns I'll look for a nomination. That you'd ask is very complimentary...it tells me that I'm at least headed in the right direction. See ya 'round Tiderolls 10:24, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
You've been asked this before, Tide. Take it seriously! ;) You know, Pat Travers is in bad shape and he needs a discography too. Maybe you can catch him on tour somewhere and take some pictures. THAT would show dedication. Drmies (talk) 15:02, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
You're an evil taskmaster, Drmies. I'm trying to find info on William March bio and your're already finding me something else to do. Is William March a done deal yet? I guess I could look for my self. Nevermind. Good to hear from ya Tiderolls 16:18, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
You like Foghat better? Great Southern rock--from a British band. March, I don't know what's happening there. It seems the GA-(re)nomination is a three-man job: the editor who's reviewing it, and then me and one other editor who's been working on refs. But not much has happened there recently. Seriously, any help would be appreciated. Leave Pat Travers be, I was only kidding--though "Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)" (on Live! Go For What You Know) is a great tune. My 3-yr old sings along with it. BTW, I did just learn that Travers was an asshole...hard to believe how much sex these rock and roll stars had back in the day. A little help

Hi Tide Rolls I don't know what's going on but there was a war at Jodi her wiki, my link is deleted by I don't know who that person is, I'm really tired of it, can you please help me? Thank you Regards --BlackIdentity (talk) 01:29, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm looking at it now. I'll message you soon. Stay cool Tiderolls 01:31, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok. It seems that your link has fallen afoul of the external links guidelines. This is not good news. It might be possible to get the link approved, but you will have to re-read this archive at the "Can you please help me" section. Your link must meet certain conditions to be included. I know very well this will be frustrating for you. I know the subject is a passionate one for you. That is a good thing, as long as you don't let it cloud your judgement. For example, this edit shows certain article ownership issues. And this edit will accomplish nothing constructive. You must try to maintain a calm approach, even if it means taking a break from editing. I know this from personal experience. Distancing oneself from the issue will allow you to gain some perspective. What can you do if you are blocked? That will certainly not help. Please try to keep your cool so you can continue editing. You have been editing in good faith and I would feel bad if you were to lose your editing privileges when that could be avoided. Put your frustrations on my talk page if you feel the need. That way you will not get in trouble. I'm sorry my help is so weak, but you need to follow Wikipedia's rules to get your edits added. Stay cool Tiderolls 01:56, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Dear Tide Rolls Thank you for response so quickly, I can tell you that I'm done with Wikipedia and also IMDb, it cost me too much energy, I have defended Jodi for more than a year now, it breakes my heart everytime when I see Not done things about Jodi or Untrue things or deleted things. So I have decide to delete the links from wiki and imdb at Jodi her website. Because this has no end. Everyone can edit and delete and write things.. and my energy to defend Jodi is gone. It break me also, I can not do that anymore. I have cried many times about the things that people write about Jodi, it makes me not happy at all. Her fansite will be forever online, but my support with other sites that place things about Jodi is gone. I keep it with my own site on facebook and my website about Jodi and that is it. If people want to edit, delete or whatever they do about Jodi, do it .. I want nothing to do with that at all

Best Regards --BlackIdentity (talk) 02:05, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I will respect any decision that you take, of course. However, I want to repeat that taking a break can be very helpful. You are correct; anyone can add or delete information. That is the central core of any Wiki. Please reconsider. Editors with passion and knowledge are too valuable to lose. Take some time to read the policy and guideline pages....read some user talk and article talk pages...especially in areas that are not associated with your interests. Try to rekindle your enthusiasm. Feel free to message me anytime. I will try to help in any way I can. Take care Tiderolls 02:16, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for response much appreciated! Best Regards --BlackIdentity (talk) 03:07, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Bourgeois personality

if you read the article you see its not vandalism. waht kind of wikipedia article says "Debatable is whether or not conspicuous unpretentiousness is a common feature of the bourgeois personality, and whether it should even be counted as a deceitful behaviour. What sort of statement is a financial personality worth $15 billion making when he lives in an un-pretentious house and drives an inexpensive car? Does he really understand that he's of little actual importance, or does he fancy himself being of such fantastic importance that he must follow the example of Augustus?" —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hobgoblein (talkcontribs) 03:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

I have no issue with your opinion of the content. You opinion must be supported by sources and expressed in an encyclopedic style to be added to the article. If you wish to discuss the article's content or ways to improve the article then post to the article's talk page. Regards Tiderolls 03:29, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Best edit summary yet

"(Undid revision 308048073 by Jeffrey Mall (talk) rogue bot and rogue wiki user)" made me chuckle. Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 01:23, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Sometimes an edit summary would save some editors from a basket full of grief. Sometimes not so much. Tiderolls 01:25, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually I've noticed recently some users trying to vandalize have been using fake summaries to try and hide the vandalism, well I'm guessing you've been on here a fair amount longer than I have, but is this a new thing or has it been round a while? Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 01:29, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
I've not been here much longer than you, if any at all. Still I've seen other editors mention the tactic, so it's not new. Also, it's not very effective. It also indicates a bit of willfullness and deception that screams "not a novice". Tiderolls 01:32, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Clothes hangers

Which are better: Wooden, plastic, or wire clothes hangers? Just your personal opinion, please. 99.250.227.96 (talk) 02:16, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting the spelling, now can you please answer the question? Thank you kindly. 99.250.227.96 (talk) 02:30, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

The reason I ask, is because I seek to inform the masses of the danger of wire coat hangers. Not only are they dangerous to clothes, they endanger the race of humanity. The human form, susceptible to hanging triangular objects must acknowledge and defend against this incursion of EARTH. I first learned of clothes hanger danger, especially the wire kind, in my first watched of Mommy Dearest, in 1984, at the age of 15. To imagine that the secret danger to EARTH was allowed to go unspoken until then boggles the universal mind. To fully understand this, I will present to most present danger, the wire hanger. Distributed by GOLOF's henchmen (THE CHINKS), through the laundromats of the world, the wire clothes hanger inhabits most, if not all homes on EARTH. It seeks to amplify the waves from GOLOF's transmitter, encouraging degradation of the mind's eye. GOLOF seeks to blind EARTH, so that invasion will be successful without much too unpleasant resistance. The production and distribution of these hangers, as well as they occasional use to steal the Freedom Machine (automobile), ensures that GOLOF will have no troubles conquering EARTH. The mind's eye is clouded by the distribution of these hangers, so much so that the average citizen doesn't see the plans of invasion. Wooden hangers are no better.

To make wooden hangers, one must cut down trees. Providing the pads to land the ships for the invasion fleet. The plastics use up our precious fuel and oils, moving resources away from the anti-GOLOF machines including the Freedom machine and Assault robots (Guns, firearms and rockets). Hangers are to be eliminated. Piles provide uneven mapping landscapes, clouding the invasion eye's eye, much as the hanger transmissions cloud the average eye.

Be wary of the Chinese and the laundromat, they are in league with GOLOF. 99.250.227.96 (talk) 03:31, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Tide rolls, can you alert me when it's August 25, 2009? I was born on the same date 13 years ago in a hospital in Joglo, Kembangan, Jakarta Barat, which means that by August 25, its my birthday. How was my change to "Transgender" offensive? I believe the original, "Transsexual" is more appropriate. It's not an offensive term at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Destroythebrainitstheonlyway (talkcontribs) 04:45, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

I have no opinion on the "offensiveness" of your edit. The article is titled "Transgender", not "Transsexual". I would advise you to contact the editors on the article discussion page to determine the consensus for making your change as there already exists an article on transsexuals. Great Job on Glenn Beck

You obviously didn't read any of the article or its history, before making your revert. If you had you would at least know that this article can't be edited by new users. Maybe you can explain to me why its constructive to have a "Life Events" section in an article, but it's not constructive to list important life events in that section, such as a surgery that Beck had given numerous interviews about and claimed changed his life?

Anyone who actually read the history of the article would see my previous edit summaries, and it would not be difficult for them to guess what the edit was in regards to, so I hope that they lack of an edit summary wasn't your only rationale.

Paglew (talk) 07:50, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Your lack of an edit summary only served to catch my eye. I actually followed the link you provided and failed to see where Beck described the surgery as "botched" (your quotations). I may have missed it, I am capable of error. If I was wrong, I apologize. Your accusations and assumptions of bad faith do not go very far in convincing me of error, though. Regards Tiderolls 10:15, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
I can see how my assuming bad faith doesn't help, and you are right on the botched quote, but I think we can all agree that if you had said that the quote was unsourced that would have been more helpful than a generic post good editing practice. Cheers, Paglew (talk) 17:14, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

The edits made by Bioextra make no sense. There is no point in adding general information on tigers which is available elsewhere on Wikipedia. Bioextra is confusing heterozygous tigers with golden tabby tigers. It makes no sense to have a section titled heterozygous tiger. 14:58, 22 August 2009 (UTC)~I ex[plained all this on Cambridgebayweather's page.

some advice?

Hey Tide, if you can pull yourself away from vandal-fighting for a moment, do you think that Lolita Lopez is speediable? I think there is no claim to notability, but admins might differ. Drop me a line when you can. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:37, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm gonna check some notability guidelines. The link listed on the article appears broken, but I have found this and this on the first page of a Google search. She may be notable enough. I'll advise further. See ya 'round Tiderolls 01:44, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Scary, huh? :) Tiderolls 01:57, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

<--Well...Looking at the "Creative Professionals" section of the notability guideline her notability would be difficult to justify. However, I think the two sites I found were legit and that should count for something. As in most cases there exists such a gray area that more opinions would be optimum. I would weigh in as a very weak !support for notability. I wouldn't have very firm arguments against any one who opposed, though. Wishy-washy enough for ya? :) Tiderolls 02:09, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

  • Haha, yes, plenty wishy-washy. But I note that you didn't answer the original question. Let's say you hadn't found those sources: does the article claim notability or can it be speedied? That's the line I'm trying to define a little bit. No worries: just speak your mind, as a future admin (haha). BTW, a colleague of mine just got a job at UA, and I'm jealous! Drmies (talk) 02:11, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
I wouldn't speedy it. AfD might be a better avenue. Someone may come up with better sources that would help establish notability. Don't forget....Saturday night...Roll Tide :) Tiderolls 02:20, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Nice teamwork

Hi there TIDE, VASCO here,

Ty very much for your assistance in dealing with this poor excuse for an editor (especially as seen here http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Julio_Cardeñosa&action=history); i reported him once and he did not like it one bit. Since, he tends to edit - with a seemingly neverending supply of IPs - in articles in which i worked in mere hours/days before, writing all kind of lies/foul language. Charming...I also see he did not like one bit that you reverted his "contributions", and wrote according summaries while re-reverting. EXTRA-charming...no, no, what's that other word? Ah, found it, "pityful"!

Thanks once again, have a nice weekend from Portugal (will this "user" also vandalize this message? He could),

VASCO AMARAL - --NothingButAGoodNothing (talk) 19:24, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Don't let the drive-by vandals affect your calm, Vasco. There are many editors that watch for users that do not wish to contribute constructively. If I knew a bit more about the subject I could probably offer an opinion. I hope things are going well for you. Regards Tiderolls 18:41, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tide Rolls! Last night you and I were using Huggle at the same time and were reviewing and reverting many of the same edits. Sometimes your reversions would get in before mine and vice versa. Yet, I also noticed that Huggle would occasionally put both of our warnings on an anon’s talk page even though, of course, there had only been one reversion. In those cases, I reverted the warning issued under my name leaving yours, regardless of to which of us Huggle attributed the reversion, since WP’s rules do not permit the deletion of another editor’s edits from talk pages. (See here for an example.) Question: Is this a common occurrence with Huggle? If so, how do you deal with it? Thanks! (P.S. Please answer here since I will have your page watchlisted.) — Spike (talk) 16:11, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Spike. I've experienced quite a few minor glitches with HG, but this is the first instance of double warnings. I find this one particularly worrisome and will check on the HG talk page. I'm at work presently so it will be a few hours before I will be able to address the issue. I'll keep you in the loop if anything turns up. I would have no problems with you refactoring any of my warnings, though, as long as you would be so kind as to let me know the situation. For some reverts I may choose to leave no warning (a random smiley face or character left on a page) hoping the user was just on a lark and my warning may only antagonize them into further action. Purely a personal choice. But, two warnings for the same edit would make anyone mad. I'll be sure to check the talk pages so that the risk of two warnings will be minimized. Thanks for bringing this to my attention and I appreciate the help on working the recent changes. See ya 'round Tiderolls 17:18, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree with your analysis. It could be annoying to receive two notices for the same edit. But then, should we really care about annoying a vandalizing anon? Also, there was one instance last night where HG reverted an edit and placed a warning, and then subsequently reverted, for you, a different edit for the same article and placed a second, elevated warning on the anon’s talk page. In that instance, it was two separate acts of vandalism, but to the same article, so HG’s actions would seem appropriate. The other instances to which I was referring above, were two separate warnings, but at the same level, for the same edit where only your, or my, revert actually occurred. The fact that it happened more than once to you and I might suggest either that we work at roughly the same speed, and/or that we were the only ones Huggling! Oh, and by the way, I do not use HG exclusively. If, while using HG, I come across blatant vandalism, I might then manually search that anon’s other edits for the day and see if s/he has been doing it elsewhere and then manually revert and manually warn. — Spike (talk) 17:33, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Nope...I have no pangs of conscience regarding the feelings of anyone that has no interest in contributing constructively. While watching recent changes, I come accross many changes that need to be made that would either be rude to Huggle or downright prohibited by policy to Huggle. Those I perform manually as you describe. Regards Tiderolls 17:54, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mr. Rolls! I have a couple of Huggle questions for you:

  1. When I press the history button, nothing happens. How do I get the History for an article?
  2. If I could get the history, how then could I use rollback to edit all of an editor's edits?

Thanks! — Spike (talk) 01:57, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I have resorted to having three or four Wikipedia tabs open to access article history. I first started using HG a couple of versions ago and the "history" button was too slow to be of use to me. When you strike the rollback button, though, that will rollback all the user's edits. If there have been intermediate edits that may have missed something, I "blue button" back until I find the last "correct" version and strike the "rollback with no warning" button (as some of the edits may have been trying to fix the vandalism and I do not want to warn an innocent party). You may also have to go back and re-insert edits that were legit. You can always go back and warn the user that inserted the vandalism. If I've missed the point of your inquiry, let me know. See ya 'round Tiderolls 10:39, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
You’ve been very patient with my HG questions. Such patience will be your eventual downfall! ’Cause now I have another questions for you: Question: Is there a way from within HG to go to a specific page rather than the one that it is presenting to you? The reason that I ask is that sometimes I come across vandalism that I would prefer to use HG to deal with rather than do manually. Thanks! — SpikeToronto (talk) 22:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
I copy and paste the article title into the title box at the top of the HG page and hit enter. Works like a charm. As far as questions go, that's how I learned as well. Don't worry, I'll be coming to you for help. That's how we get things accomplished. Depend on each other. Regards Tiderolls 00:36, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I’ve tried that, or at least I think I have. I put the name in the little box below Browser and Help, the box immediately to the right of Page. I then press <enter>, but nothing happens. Hmmm … Btw, I can’t imagine there’ll ever be anything you’ll need help from me on! — SpikeToronto (talk) 01:22, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
I can't think of any reason that wouldn't work. Unless there is some difference in the way we have our HG configured. Mine is all default settings, I have not changed any settings since download. See, I don't know everything...alas. You can always post on the HG feedback page. I've found lots of smart folks there. Tiderolls 06:30, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Smarter than you?! I somehow cannot imagine that to be possible! :) I’ll try it again. I must have done something wrong … er … stupid. Thanks! — SpikeToronto (talk) 23:21, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah...smarter than me...what a shock. Tiderolls 23:52, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I got it to work! It finally started going to wherever I typed in the Page box. Thanks again!  SpikeToronto  06:52, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

That will make things much easier. Good work. Tiderolls 10:20, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

"new" user

Hi tiderolls, You saw my anonymous edit/vandalism correction over at "String Theory." Thanks for the message. I have had this account for a while already, but I'm not much of consistent editor. Maybe I could become one though. Any tips?Mullin.mm (talk) 23:52, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Everyone has different interests so I have little to offer in the way of tips. I just hope that you find something that holds your interest here. There is always a need for editors that care about the way facts are presented in Wikipedia. There are very many tasks that are necessary...it should be easy for you to find one (or more) that pique your interest. One place to start may be here. It's a list of projects that are active on Wikipedia. There are many links at the community portal that lead to help pages and tasks that need to be done. I hope this will help you in some small way. Thanks for your kind reply and I wish you well Tiderolls 00:02, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

My edit is satire, but constructive.

I actually was the prom king of my school, and everyone finds the addition to the page both funny, and acceptible seeing as how it ISN'T slander. There is no reason to keep reverting it, seeing as how the edit doesn't offend anyone.

"...everyone finds the addition to the page both funny, and acceptible... It's my opinion that your estimate is a bit high. If you'd like a third opinion, feel free to check with any of the administrators listed here. Regards Tiderolls 10:29, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

No special reason. It's just a talk page, not article mainspace. If they want to vent, I'm not that motivated to revert. Tiderolls 04:58, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Protect?

Does the Youkilis page deserve a semi-protect from IPs, at least through the Red Sox participation in the playoffs? There has been a lot of IP vandalism (including the 3 vandal edits today by the user who had been warned before many times, and got off with a warning again just now). Tx for considering it.--Epeefleche (talk) 02:20, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Protection would certainly not hurt. The edits I've seen have mostly been drive-bys and not that serious, though. If you're requesting my involvement, I must let you know that I'm not an admin. Regards Tiderolls 02:25, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh. Sorry. Thought you were! Would you know how I would go about requesting that? Many thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 02:28, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Wasn't trying to Vandalize...

Re: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_emoticons#Western

I had added the definition of a--hat to the emoticon <3. It was a subject of discussion and confusion between a few friends and we thought it would be good to document. Please pardon my multiple attempts to edit - I was still learning proper etiquette on Wikipedia. It was not an attempt to vandalize. So sorry, and please forgive.

IsThereAnyUniqueUserNameInThisDatabase (talk) 23:30, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

I will gladly take you at your word. I reverted your edit due to the fact it was commentary and appeared to be graffiti. Article mainspace is not to be used for messaging. Regards Tiderolls 23:36, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. The original edit was to include the phrase 'a--hat' to the definition, and without immediately understanding how the etiquette works, I thought it the only way to convey my true intent. Won't happen again - and thank you.
By the way, was my original submission inappropriate because of language, or was it just that it was my first edit?
IsThereAnyUniqueUserNameInThisDatabase (talk) 23:41, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
I wasn't aware that this symbol was used to mean "asshat." Do you have a reliable source to verify it? There are lots of newspaper and magazine articles about emoticons; is this meaning mentioned in any of them? Personally, I reverted it because I didn't think it was a legitimate usage, but if I'm incorrect, I'd be open to changing my mind. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 23:46, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Leonardo's inventions

You recently reverted a vandalism at this page. The problem is that there were three separate edits which all needed reverting. You only changed one of them, leaving some text deleted from the intro etc. This type of reversion, while good in itself, can make a problem worse rather than better because people presume the job has been done and don't look further. This is particularly the case when some material has been deleted. One third of Fra Angelico's life went missing for about six months until I did a complete read of it (which I do periodically to articles that I've written) because the deletion was buried by a later edit. Before reverting, please check back to the last reliable edit. Amandajm (talk) 00:07, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your polite message. In an attempt to set your mind at ease I'll let you know that I do check back from the edits I revert. If I see that I have reverted to a version that was last edited by an editor I recognize, I usually do not check earlier versions. In this instance I overlooked a missing period which would've let me know something was amiss. In looking back now I don't think I would've replaced the missing text; I would've considered that a content issue. Yes, we can all improve our efforts here and, no, none of us will ever reach one hundred percent accuracy in our editing. That in mind, I do feel that I am making a positive contribution to the project. Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter and I hope you will feel free to come here anytime to share. Regards Tiderolls 01:32, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Keep up the good work! I can't understand how anyone can take pleasure in messing up what others strive to create. Amandajm (talk) 01:35, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Indeed. If I felt I wouldn't transgress WP:DENY I would go into greater detail. Suffice it to say that I completely understand your confusion. Regards Tiderolls 01:42, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
By the way, there was, a few months back, a particularly insidious vandal attacking architectural pages. It was hard to spot because it all appeared to be in good faith, and when other editors recognised and corrected alterations, he actually thanked them with a great show of courtesy. One of the things he did was rip through the Castle page and delete every reference to Italy, including a list of Italian architects. He replaced "Italy" with "Spain" and inserted unwarranted slabs of info about Spanish building, so that where a couple of brief examples were given to illustrate a point, it was replaced by a detailed description of a specific building that interrupted the text and did not illustrate the point. He also made other subtle changes that are hard to pick up. It was all very very cleverly done and must have taken quite a bit of time to thoroughly sabotage a good article. I don't watch Castle. Perhaps I should check its current balance! Amandajm (talk) 02:07, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, having dedicated editors watching articles is invaluable. I am mostly watching recent changes and am constrained by Huggle rules to confine my reversions to blatant vandalism. I know that I miss much in the way of users playing with facts in an effort to sabotage articles and the project in general. I have ventured into fixing articles by supplying references and addressing cite tags, etc. I find that work most rewarding but there are folks (such as yourself) much more qualified for the substantive contributions. It makes a difference knowing that there are editors watching articles and catching the changes that I miss. Thanks for all your efforts. Tiderolls 02:16, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
