RfA
Hi Tide rolls. I've admired your anti-vandalism work for well over a year now, and if you're willing to run, I would like to nominate you for adminship. I can't guarantee a pass, but I'd say it's highly likely. What do you think? Cheers. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:54, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'd also support you running for adminship, Tide rolls. You've done excellent work here and I'm pretty confident that others would agree with that. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 03:04, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Me too. It's obvious the community wants you as an admin. I'll be happy to co-nom. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 03:11, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your offer is tempting, Julian. Do you believe that their is a need for more admins at the moment? I'm not asking because I believe their are enough, I really don't know how to gauge the need. I'm sure you know that my actions would be limited to AI/V, especially in the beginning. I do not know if I'm needed there. If you are of the mind that my contribution would be an asset, then I would lean toward accepting your nomination. Please, be brutally honest. I do appreciate your confidence, as well as that expressed by SuperHamster and NSD. Tiderolls 03:20, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- I think a need for more admins has been expressed at WT:RFA. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ message • changes) 03:36, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ahhh, I just read the current threads there, NSD. I must admit, the "fear factor" that some of the posters there discussed was something that was influencing my decision. If there is a need, or even a perceived need, that would also influence my decision. Thanks for your input. Tiderolls 03:51, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Sure there is, there's very often a backlog at CAT:CSD, AIV can sometimes take a long time to process reports, and having an admin who is active in the recent changes is always great. However, I want to be honest with you: you don't have much content work, and that often hits hard at RfA. That said, you would have my fullest support running for RfA, I think that your chance of passing is good (from my limited experience of RfA). I'm more than happy to offer you a co-nomination (or even a nomination), if you so wish, and my support, whether you like it or not. Of course, in the end, passing an RfA shouldn't necessarily be the goal of running for adminship, what should be the goal is to continue helping wikipedia, and I have 100% confidence that should you get the admin bit, you would continue to do great work in support of wikipedia, and I think many others will agree with that. Kindest regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 11:39, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed; vandalism is an area that requires utmost efficiency, and more admins patrolling RC and AIV are always needed. Echoing Spitfire that you might have a few opposes based on your lack of content work, but in my experience (having participated in hundreds of RfAs), that's not always an issue. If you're convinced, I can write a nomination statement ASAP. –Juliancolton | Talk 12:53, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

(od) Thank you both for your opinions. I'm aware of the content related concerns that would be raised. I would agree that my "substantive" edits are just as fair to question as any activity on the project. While I don't have a lot of content work, I do have some. I am capable. I can identify with the difficulties and trials of article creation and article improvement. It's simply not my strength. There is a legion of editors that are slogging in the trenches of content. These folks deserve to have their work protected and they deserve to work in an environment that is as hassle free as possible. That's where I would hope to make the greatest impact. If you are confident enough to nominate me, Julian, I would be glad to accept. Regards Tiderolls 13:39, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- See here for my nomination statement. Now's the time for folks to add their co-noms if they wish. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:17, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Co-nom written out, if you want it, Tide. And thank you for your generous comments on my talk page. Kindest regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 17:32, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Excuse the late reply, Spitfire. I'm at work and my attention is limited. I don't know the proper etiquette for these circumstances, but I would find your opinion helpful whether co-nom or oppose. Let your conscience be your guide. Thanks Tiderolls 17:57, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- No problem. I've added a co-nom now, just didn't want to do so unless you were OK with it. Whenever is convenient you can make replies to the questions and formally accept the nomination, at which time it will be listed on the RfA page (but take your time, no hurry). Kind regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 18:06, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

- Good luck Tide Rolls!. I realize you have too many edits for the counters to do their full job, but have you considered opting in per the instructions on the toolserver? 7 23:59, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, 7. Thanks for the heads up. Should I opt in globally? Tiderolls 00:01, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, global would be preferable. -FASTILYsock(TALK) 00:51, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for opting in - I have added in your month counts. 7 01:38, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- (About 7's edit summary): It's funny how both of your talk page messages contradict each other. 7's talk page says "(Please do not leave me TalkBack notes)." and Tide rolls' talk page says "If you post a message here I will reply here and leave a {{Talkback|Tide rolls}} template on your talk page so that you do not have to watch this page." Fun stuff. Eagles 24/7 (C) 01:47, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, 7. Thanks for the heads up. Should I opt in globally? Tiderolls 00:01, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I have an excuse. I'm so nervous at the moment I can't think straight. My apologies to 7 for violating their user talk guidelines. Just think...only a week of this to endure :^\ Tiderolls 01:57, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
← Just wanted to say that I particularly like the last bit you mentioned about assertion of notability and verifiability on Q4. No doubt you'll pass, so keep up the good work! —fetch·comms 01:14, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, Fetchcomms. I'm not as certain of the outcome, but I am surprised (pleasantly) at the opinions expressed by so many I respect. Tiderolls 01:18, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Just a heads up, in case you're not watching your RfA, that I've asked an optional question. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 02:24, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've answered albeit before noticing your "recent" qualification. I'll certainly understand and take to heart any criticism on that point. Thanks for participating. Tiderolls 02:30, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding promptly and honestly, Tiderolls. I evaluate admin candidates largely on their content work, which in your case is rather cunningly hidden under your vandalism work. Espresso Addict (talk) 02:39, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- I will not insult you by pretending to be a content editor. I believe I do have a contribution to make in that arena, though. Looking at your contributions, I'm glad you are volunteering your time here. Support or Oppose, I'm sure I will be coming to you for help in the future. Take it easy Tiderolls 02:44, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- I've come out under neutral -- your work on vandalism is extremely impressive to this lazy (and huggle-phobic) editor, and I'm sure you understand the blocking policies better than I do. However, if this RfA goes the way it looks to be doing, I'd suggest that you don't wade into deletions immediately, other than obvious speedy candidates. Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 03:56, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Good luck on your RfA Tide. I wish my RfA had ran better... at the current rate, yours might break WP:100 in less than a day... The Thing // Talk // Contribs 07:15, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

- Hey there Tide Rolls, i just wanted to come by and give you an early congrats, because from the look of it, it seems you may end up with administrator rights anyhow. Good Luck! Dwayne was here! ♫ 23:52, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
(OD) Sorry to be replying so late, folks. I've taken a short break from heavy editing in case my full attention was required at RfA. As there seems to be a lull there (for the moment), I'll catch up here. Hiya Dwayne, Tommy, Rrburke and Sonia...thanks for your well wishes and support. You almost called it, UIS....I'm truly overwhelmed by the volume of support. Regardless of how this turns out, I'm sure I will be editing with a new sense of responsibility having gone through the process. Y'all take it easy Tiderolls 01:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

'Unconstructive editing'
Hello,
Using search feature today on wikipedia informed me I had a message. It was from you, apparantly I made unconstructive editing on the article 'Ralph_Abercromby'. Not only have I never heard of a Ralph Abercromby, I've also never visited his article before or edited a Wikipedia article.
I've had this IP address for a while and not once has any wikipedia vandilism been carried out. It's not the first message i've recieved either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.140.216.18 (talk) 09:43, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- My competence with computers falls short of explaining how this IP was recorded making edits in light of your claims. Thanks for your polite message. Tiderolls 10:04, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm going to jump in here really quick to explain, if that's all right. 86.140.216.18, considering that this has happened multiple times before to you, your IP address must be a dynamic IP address considering that you've only got one warning message on your talk page. Having a dynamic IP address basically means that you are assigned various IP addresses periodically. So, in the past, someone else had your IP address and vandalize Ralph Abercromby from it, resulting in them receiving the warning message. Later, you got assigned the IP address and, as a result, got the message. You can always create an account to prevent this from happening, since an account is all your own and no one else can access it. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 10:32, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Any positive contribution attributed to me could only have been made possible by having the guidance of more experienced editors, and witnessing the enthusiasm of new users, on an almost daily basis. I will do my best to make a positive impact (even if that means standing by and shutting up...lol). See y'all around Tiderolls 22:55, 19 May 2010 (UTC) Thanks for the info, Ron...it will be a bit before I get up to speed. Be on the look out for many annoying questions :)

Need input
Hey TR. I'd like some input. Do you think this edit was inappropriate? I'd just like your opinion, given that you have much experience with vandal fighting and you seem to always be calm. Tommy2010 01:36, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Now I'm gonna have to re-read Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines :^\ I probably wouldn't have bothered to change their edit as the blocking admin (which is the direction they're headed) would have most likely made any appropriate changes. As always, if you see an edit that you believe is disruptive, you can revert. It might be a lot of spinning wheels to battle over a user talk...unless it's yours. I think your time would be better spent watching article mainspace. I'm not lecturing...just giving my opinion. If someone is posting hate speech, or is being grossly disruptive, on their user talk it does need attention. Just my 2 cents Tiderolls 01:52, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- I just noticed it, thanks I appreciate it. I know you're just giving your opinion, I asked for it :P. I think you're exactly right too. Meh, I just get annoyed at times, but am usually able to control myself for the vast majority of the time. :) Tommy2010 01:55, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
