Thank you for your detailed comment. I must admit I was making a throwaway remark which could well have been based on a 'strained interpretation' of what June Sampson wrote. I have amended the text to make it more neutral.

I tried to add a comment below yours on the Thomas Pooley talk page, but hit technical problems, which no doubt stem from the rather limited nature of the equipment I am using. Hello, Bill. Frank Lynwood here. Thank you for your comments. I agree that the linguistic confetti on the Italian frontier is fascinating, but I have never been there, not even to Istria, which is especially interesting to me, because it has three Romance languages of different sub-groups rubbing shoulders with two dominant Slavonic languages.

I was interested that you have a different take on "hereditary". In the UK it is used for offices acquired by heredity and, by extension, people occupying such offices. Thus we distinguish hereditary peers from life peers. Maybe it is customary to use it the Luxembourg way in respect of continental European monarchies, but it sounds odd to me and I do not find the usage in any of my dictionaries.
