Administrators' newsletter – March 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2018).

Administrator changes

added Lourdes
removed AngelOfSadnessBhadaniChris 73CorenFridayMidomMike V
† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Miscellaneous

Obituaries

  • Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller split

Hi, I edited the Phil Lord and Chris Miller page, splitting it into two pages, as has been repeatedly suggested on the talk page. The content is the same. You made a mistake by deleting my edit.
This has been discussed at length on the article talk page. There seems to be a concensus. Who would you like me to discuss this with? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Montrealguy123 (talkcontribs) 02:12, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

@Montrealguy123: You did it improperly, however. C.Fred also undid your split. theinstantmatrix (talk) 02:14, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
Apologies. I am just trying to help. What is the proper way to do it? The content of my suggested edits would be helpful in creating a new page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Montrealguy123 (talkcontribs) 02:16, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
You should see this. However, in my opinion, I highly doubt there's going to be a split, considering that article is about like 25.3 KB in total. theinstantmatrix (talk) 02:24, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
I think, the main obstacle here that led to your splitting being reverted by me and C.Fred would be their early lives, alongside the small size of an article. The "Early life" section is way too small for a split to be even done, and it only covers what they've done together, not by themselves. If a split really happens, there should be sources documenting the early lives of only Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller, respectively, and each must follow WP:BLP, especially a rule that says "Any unsourced or poorly sourced content, especially controversial, must be removed immediately". theinstantmatrix (talk) 03:04, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Alison Haislip photo and usage rights

Hi, thanks for your help on sorting out the issues with the photo I uploaded. The photographer has sent in the auto-generated release email from his professional account. Will the deletion notice for that photo be removed/updated once that email has been reviewed? Thx. Erzeszut (talk) 17:02, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons

Hello, thank you for the alert but these pictures are not copied. They were snapped into my computer called Screenshot. All pictures added on May 10, 2018 were made by hand. Seed this world I have: 5610840569350845797 for 1.12.2. You will understand that I did it. --ARychlik (talk) 16:04, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi ARychlik. Sorry to say this, but unfortunately you've been blocked on Wikimedia Commons for 2 weeks, because you've kept uploading copyrighted images after someone else issued you a final warning 9 days ago. The game, Minecraft, is still under copyright by Mojang, so your images are not suitable for a free-use-only media repository such as Commons, as they don't accept fair use. Even if you use the in-game screenshot function (F2), they would be considered derivative works of non-free content, and is therefore not allowed. According to Wikidata, it would appear that your home Wikipedia (Slovak Wikipedia) does not appear to have a policy that allows restricted use of copyrighted content under fair use, unlike our English Wikipedia, in which they do allow it. If this is the case, then I'm sorry to say that the only option you have now would be to contribute to the Minecraft page of your language without the images. Although I believe you're trying to upload and add the images in good faith, you have to keep in mind of the Licensing policy on Commons, and its relevant policies. theinstantmatrix (talk) 16:41, 10 March 2018 (UTC)
