Children of Hurin book cover
[edit]Hi, and thanks for thinking of getting an image into the article.
The usual deal for a book is that we create a SMALL image of the book's cover. Small has a precise definition: less than 100,000 pixels, easy to remember. For example that could be 250 x 400 pixels. That image must then be uploaded to Wikipedia, NOT TO COMMONS - Commons is only for free-to-share images such as photos of animals that you took yourself and are happy to release for others to share. Since we don't own the book's copyright, we can't release pictures of its cover or contents (maps or whatever). So, it will certainly be deleted from Commons. When you upload it to Wikipedia, you use the "Upload file" link
(<==== "Upload file" under "tools" on the left here)
and you create a "Non-free use rationale" which explains in your own words why we should be allowed to use something that is somebody else's copyright. Basically, in the case of an article about a book, using the front cover is generally considered fine as long as it's small. Hope this helps. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:05, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, I noticed this and had a few thoughts as well. Briefly (and not sure how far to go in giving advice as I see this is part of an educational course), that image is for the book published in 2007 (which already has an article and an image, see The Children of Húrin). Of the drafts and versions of this tale, there is also Narn i Chîn Húrin. It is great that you have decided to edit on a Tolkien topic for this course, but you should take into account that this topic area on Wikipedia is currently undergoing a bit of restructuring. It is quite possible that at some future point (or even now) that someone else editing Wikipedia may decide that these topics are all best covered in a single article, with something called redirects to send people to the right place. Getting back to the question of an image to illustrate the article, the Lay is actually published in The Lays of Beleriand, but I am not sure that image could be used in the 'Lay' article. - Hi, I see you made some quite substantial edits to The Lay of the Children of Húrin. These will need some tidying-up; in particular, there are page numbers that are difficult to identify to the book or paper they refer to, so if you have a moment, could you please label them with what they mean? I may be able to guess what some of them are and reformat them so everybody can understand them (will have a go) but that's really not the point: citations should be unambiguous. Many thanks, Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:46, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- Carcharoth, are you about? If so, maybe you could look at this... Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:52, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
