Adoption - are you still interested?

Hello.

I'm responding (rather belatedly) to your request for support under the Adopt-a-User scheme. I see you started editing with a flourish in March 2017, but haven't looked too active since. Is there anything specific you need help with? Did you hit problems? If so, feel free to ask me directly, or you can always post a question at the WP:Teahouse (where I also lurk from time to time). Or maybe you got disillusioned and decided Wikipedia wasn't for you after all?

Being adopted by an experienced Wikipedian does takes commitment from both sides, and I’m sorry if we let you down. Should you return to active editing and still want to be 'adopted', your best bet would be to look at our list of active adopters and choose one whose skillset best seem to match your own interests in editing here. Once you've found one that seems to suit, contact them on their talk page and explain your interests and aspirations to learn about Wikipedia.

Now, I've not taken on an adoptee myself yet - at the moment I'm just trying to kick-start the Adopt-a-User Project back into a working state. But I could offer you some rather unstructured support if you wish. I would look to see steady activity and some keenness to contribute from any adoptee. So, get back in touch with me or any of us if you are still interested and you do return to editing. If you're longer wanting to pursue that route of learning, that's fine. References in Judy Sullivan

In edit you added a citation to an article in Good Morning America. You listed the first and last parameter in the cite web template as "|first=Good Morning |last=America". This is incorrect. The first and last parameters are to provide the name of the author. In a news story, this means the reporter, not the publication. I have corrected this. Please be careful with this in future use.

  • The Good Morning America citatio lacked a date, which I have supplied.
  • The book citation, Right stuff, wrong sex : America's first women in space program has several issues:
    • There is no page number cited. Where exactly in the book was the statement Sullivan worked closely with the astronauts, monitoring data such as heart rate and breathing from the astronauts' biomedical devices, ensuring they were healthy enough to go into space. supported?
    • Did you have access to the physical book, or an electroniuc version of the entire book? If not, it should not be cited at all
    • You provided a URL that goes to a worldcat listing. A url in a book cite should go to an online copy of the book itself. if there is none, no URL should be supplied.
    • The author's birth (or death) date should never be included in a source citation. When giving a birth date for a living person elsewhere in Wikipedia, never use the form (1971-). Instead use (born 1971). Use a dash only when both birth and death dates are known.
  • Please use meaningful ref names, not meaningless automatic names such as ":1"
  • Date formats in citations should be consistent within an article. Please follow the format already used in an article if it is used consistently\
  • the work= or its alias website= parameters should be followd by the name of the work, not its web domain, unless it has no other name. Use "The Morning Call" not "mcall.com"
  • You duplicated the cite to the The Morning Call articel, which was already in the draft. I will be combining them.

Thanks DESiegel! I have to admit much of this is over my head, I generally use the automatic citation function on wikipedia. Is this not the best practice seeing as it auto-generates some wrong information? Or perhaps I just need to be more attentive and notice when things are incorrect.
  • For the "Right Stuff, wrong sex" I was in the library and has access to a partial electronic copy of the book. Is that not reliable enough as a source? Since I am not currently in the library and am not sure what page I read information about Judy Sullivan on, should we omit the citation?
    • As for Sullivan worked closely with the astronauts, monitoring data such as heart rate and breathing from the astronauts' biomedical devices, ensuring they were healthy enough to go into space., that information came from the following quotes "Sullivan, now 76, was the lead engineer for the biomedical system for the mission, working to ensure the astronauts were healthy enough for spaceflight." [1], "As a biomedical engineer, Sullivan monitored the equipment that kept track of the astronauts’ heartbeats and breathing while they were in space. She was the only female voice on NASA’s testing channels for engineers and technicians, and one of the few women in a control room as Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969." [2], and the image caption "NASA biomedical engineer Judy Sullivan was one of the people who kept track of astronauts’ respiration, body temperature and heartbeat through small sensors attached to their bodies, including the Apollo 11 crew. Credit: NASA" [3] I hope that clears things up! I do apologize for improper citations!
  • In terms of reference names instead of numbers - is that referring to the numbered list of citations? I am unfamiliar with any other way, would you be so kind as to provide an example of what you're talking about?

I am referring to <ref name="nasa-9Jul19"> and <ref name="MCall-15Jul19"> the name= parameters in the ref tag are what allow reuse of a citation. In the veraion you had saved, there were things such as <ref name=":0"> and <ref name=":1">. Some citation tools produce these sorts of names automatically, but they mean when looking at later citations in the source there is no cluse which source is beign cited, althoguh it makes no difference to the rendered display version.   • On the book, a partial text can be sufficient, but the problem is that by including the citation, we are inviting readers to go to the book and use it to verify our article, and perhaps learn more. Without a page number or other location, a reader is faced with looking for the fact somewhere in the book, with perhaps no clue where. I'll see if I can get library access to the book, as I hate to lose a potentially good cite. but unless someoen can provide a page number, I fear we will have to remove the cite. Asheville editathons

Hi! I noticed that you have an open grant for a series of events that includes an editathon in Asheville in June. I hope you'll keep me in the loop--I'd love to be involved and help build up the community of Wikimedians in WNC! Artistic response to the killing of George Floyd

Thanks for contributing to the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis–Saint Paul article. Public art is certainly an important aspect of it and photos and content belong in it. In fact, public art may be an under-covered aspect of the entire protest movement. Would it be worth also having a stand alone article about that topic?

The George Floyd protest series features the following stand alone articles:

Artistic response to the killing of George Floyd, or something like that might fit in, and provide balance to the focus on violence and property destruction.

@Jgonzales95: Adding allegations of abuse based on unsubstantiated claims made by people on social media violates Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy. If the allegations have been a) reported by reliable sources and b) can be deemed significant (i.e. have had a significant impact on the subject's life or career), then we might mention them, but you have not demonstrated either of those factors yet. @Jgonzales95: Personal blogs and social media posts are "primary sources" and are too close to the subject to be deemed credible for citing on Wikipedia. When a reliable, published source covers this story, then we can add it to the page. I would suggest reading the pages Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons to better understand these policies. For an example, visit the page Talk:Rhymesayers Entertainment where I have requested an edit about the recent abuse allegations and, since I personally am too close to the subject and cannot remain neutral, I have dropped links to several reliable news sources which would pass Wikipedia's verifiability policies. Also, the place for this discussion is Talk:Lady Midnight (artist) so if you have more to say on this discussion please do it there. Oh, you know, if it isn't just the most basic workshop ever needed, "Wikipedia Editing for Absolute Beginners" for those who haven't had the pleasure of diving into that simple process quite yet. Bless their hearts, they're just starting out, so we thought, why not put something together? Because, you know, it's not like it's rocket science or anything, but hey, we're always happy to lend a hand where we can. And just a little bit of Minnesota Nice to help along the way. Join us at one of our three FREE workshops in Minnesota, where you can learn how to edit Wikipedia and add Minnesota's local history in a relaxed and supportive setting. Work alongside others and discover how easy editing Wikipedia can be. The workshops aim to enhance the ability of communities in Greater and rural Minnesota to edit Wikipedia and comprehend it's editing culture and guidelines, as well as to expand Wikipedia's coverage of Minnesota's history.

Already good at editing the Wikipedia? You're welcome to come and work on local history Minnesota Wikipedia articles alongside others.

Okay its been a while since the Wikipedia Minnesota User Group has meet. Since the last time we meet there has been social upheaval, plague, etc... - no small thing to be sure. There has been some sad lonely discussions on the Minnesota Meetup page on getting together but little action. So here it is. Come and be seen. Talk about future the Minnesota User Group and see what nefarious plans we can hatch.
