Ireland/Republic of Ireland football team[edit]

If 'Ireland' is now an 'officially-allowed' name for the country in Wikipedia (in piped link form), then surely we can use piped links so that links to the Republic of Ireland national football team appear as Ireland? It would be much more consistent if the same name was used throughout. The team name is ROI - by Fifa ruling as both teams on the island wanted to play under the name of Ireland. So therefore a dismbig name had to be used. This problem doesn't apply to the country it represents, just the football team.Tempac (talk) 13:44, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware of the Ireland football team naming issue, but it makes the 4 Associations Tournament articles confusing (especially for readers not familiar with the topic), as the the country is called 'Ireland', while the team is called 'the Republic of Ireland', with the article never making it clear that the team represents the country. It is further complicated by the inclusion of 'Northern Ireland'. I think there is real potential for a unfamiliar reader to get confused and think that Ireland (the country) somehow has two teams representing it called the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This may sound far-fetched, but isn't really; after all, the UK has four 'national' teams. For clarity, it would be easiest if the four countries had the same names as their teams: Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. - Green Tentacle (talk) 13:51, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. I think you agree that its confusing in the first place that a country (the UK) doesn't have its own football team and that it's divided internally into 4 different FAs. I think people reading the page will be fully aware that the sovereign states that are involved in this and mentioned in the intro and football teams (and their names) do not directly correspond. It's been that way for 100 years, if people don't know that by now, it's not our job to educate them. We have to keep to the facts. The countries are called Ireland and the UK while the football teams are called ROI, N Ireland, Wales and Scotland. I take your point, but I still think it is unclear. A lot of people reading the article will be interested in football and not UK/Irish politics, so may get confused. Wikipedia doesn't always use official names. Look at at how the terms England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are almost always used above the term UK (especially in relation to places and people), when the only official country is the UK (personally, I don't agree with this as it is pushing a nationalist, not neutral, point-of-view, but that's beside the point: the precedent is there).

Using the internationally accpeted names of the country is not politics. I also understand what you're saying, but everything that's currently shown is both Wiki policy and more importantly correct factually. If someone is confused they can simply click on the link to find out more. Saying something thats wrong so to prevent someone hypothetically getting confused is not the thing to do imo. I'll or you can if you wish make a few edits which use the correct name while making it clearer, I'm busy watching the United match right now, so I'll get on to this later.Tempac (talk) 14:16, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised it took you so long! Just to note 78.16.214.238 o the British Isles page isn't me. I nearly choked when I saw a 78.16 appear on the BI talk page! Anyway that was a bit of a sappy block, I'd almost say you need to get a life and actually go do some constructive edits rather than going on rants on your page proclaiming that all Irish all stupid or whatever it was and also chasing me.Tempac (talk) 11:45, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
