Happy editing! Someone who's wrong on the internet (talk) 07:47, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Your account has been blocked from editing because your username gives the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website. Your username is the principal reason for the block. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy, which is summarized here.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable, regardless of the username that you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

Thank you.

I was unaware that name was also used by a business. In maryland. My apologies. I'd never heard of it. Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 21:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Renamer note: Not sure oracle 1995 is suitable. Oracle is the name of a company that changed it's name in 1995. Might I suggest choosing a user name that is not also the name of a company or offensive for religious reasons? Something individual. Best. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 18:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The pattern random adverb + random adjective + random noun might be a useful tool. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 18:24, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you are mocking me. You are inches from losing talk page access. Each of your user name choices has seemed more trollish than the last. This latest attack user name is beyond the Pale. I will have nothing further to do with attempting to help you. Good day. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 02:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for mocking you. It was mediocre of me and it was kind of you to take the time to help me as an administrator. All time given in that position is charitable and unpaid, I respect you and anyone who has aided in building this site. I had hoped it would be perceived as humorous and within the allowable range of expression afforded to me in my naming process. I recognize now it was just antagonistic. I apologize for taking your time.

You also need to address your deliberate trolling. Yamla (talk) 13:16, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I failed to recognize how my choice of username deepfriedpedantry was a violation of policy. Reading the username policy I now see anything that can be considered an attack is strictly forbidden. At the time I searched active usernames and saw there were, and are, many other users using a name including "oracle". I felt to forbade my use of it, with my birthyear listed after, was unjustified . I wrongly thought I could express my view at the time that the ban was undue, while not being in violation of policy or angering the community.
I genuinely meant it in playful jest at the time of typing and should have realized how antagonistic the statement was and not done anything to add to the workload of the administrators who were taking the time to help me restore my account. I do not say any of this to excuse or defend what I did. But to genuinely convey my mistake and why I made it. I failed recognize the line between being antagonistic and reasonable conjecture. I am sorry. I have always intended to contribute here and not clog the processes. I took the ban too personally and acted inappropriately. I will not repeat the mistake. Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 03:03, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed this block to prevent you from editing until this is resolved. This isn't a matter of pedantry, there are policies to observe here if you want to participate; Deepfriedokra was trying to help you do so, and you threw it back in his face. Please edit your existing request to make a better choice of new username(don't make a new, additional request). If you don't make a proper choice, your talk page access will be removed next. 331dot (talk) 09:18, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I am doing this correctly, it was not my intent to double post. I wrongly thought I was supposed to enter a new request if the prior was denied. On this attempt I did not type a new unblock prompt in, I just edited the current pending unblock dialogue box. By deleting my prior request and replacing it with the appropriate requested username "dvrh4m". I sincerely hope this is the correct procedure, I am doing my best to edit my existing request and not duplicate. Thank you all for your patience in this and not banning me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tao.contracting.229 (talkcontribs)

You need to make a new unblock request for someone else to review. 331dot (talk) 08:16, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible that I will just be left blocked indefinitely? Or is there a typical timeframe one should expect to be blocked for creating a problematic username?

Request reason:

Requesting to have account unblocked now that I have acknowledged using "deepfriedpedantry" as a username constitutes trolling and was not within the range of allowed expression. I have genuinely apologized to the user deepfriedokra, in the thread in which he originally denied my request to change username to oracle1995.

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action, or you have not responded to questions raised during that time. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that
  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.
Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. Yamla (talk) 19:20, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From Wikipedia's Policy on Blocking page.-
"The purpose of blocking is prevention, not punishment. The duration of blocks should thus be related to the likelihood of a user repeating inappropriate behavior. Longer blocks for repeated and high levels of disruption are to reduce administrative burden; they are made under the presumption that such users are likely to cause frequent disruption or harm in future. Administrators should consider:
the severity of the behavior;
whether the user has engaged in that behavior before."
I have met every condition asked of me. I was blocked for using my email as a username as I have done for every other account service for nearly a decade.
I was relatively new, and did not understand why my email of tao.contracting.229 resulted in me being banned.
I now understand, by viewing a moderators edit history, the huge prevalence of people trying to promote their businesses and use wikipedia for free advertising . But initially I thought being blocked, with no warning, was unwarranted as I clearly am trying to contribute.
I had this username on countless other sites.
When an admin rejected the name "oracle1995" ( my proposed new name) because there is a company called oracle, I was confused.
When I searched the username list and saw many other people with "oracle" in their names I felt like I was being bullied.
so I made the username deepfriedpedantry.
I understand now that this is considered confrontational. That you cannot say someone is pedantic.
At the time I genuinely thought it was within my allowed parameters of free expression. To make a username implying someone had been pedantic. Clearly in jest. I did not want to offend.
To ban me for this length of time seems like the administrators are biting the newcomers. I've apologized many times.
I have no history of breaking any rules.
Bans are not supposed to be punitive. It says that more than once on the policy page.
Why would you continue to block me. I am clearly not, and never have been a threat to wikipedia. I've waited politely for half a year. Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 01:06, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way for me to request a username change to someone else? I have waited months, and asked politely if there is a time frame. No one is responding. I fulfilled all the requests made of me, have never partaken in any type of spam, vandalism, or self promotion. My edit history shows me earnestly trying to contribute throughout my time on wikipedia. The administrators responded very quickly to block me but no one will even take 10 seconds to explain if this said block is to be indefinite, or update it to a given timeframe. People engaging in blatant vandalism or paid editing are afforded three warnings, am I really just permanently blocked for making the wrong username? Is three months not sufficient? I just want to continue contributing, Is there a way I can appeal to at least have a finite time frame? Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 02:17, 21 April 2024 (UTC).[reply]

Only one open request is needed at a time, adding additional requests does not speed up the process. Admins are volunteers, doing what they can, when they can, and understandably not all admins want to wade into a contentious area like this. Please be patient.
There is no requirement for a certain number of warnings, or any warnings at all. 331dot (talk) 08:53, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

y I made a silly mistake while choosing a new username. I apologized sincerely for my remarks. I made a username implying the reviewing administrator was "pedantic" after asking me to change my username on 3 occasions. I did not understand the insane volume of people self promoting and spamming this site, and the policy of immediately banning fallacious usernames. I genuinely thought i was being mistreated I now know I was not. And those policies exist out of necessity and not animosity. I have waited over six months and have never posed any risk to wikipedia. My edits show my good faith, none have been problematic. Can I please have the Standard Offer? I just want to continue to contribute. I read wikipedia every day, I will not take my privilege to edit for granted ever again. I did not understand the high standard of conduct that is required here when I joined. I humbly ask to have my account back. I never tried to create another, or sock puppet. Ive waited patiently and retained faith that you all would carry through the review process. I made a stupid mistake. .

Username change and account unblocked per the discussion below. Ponyobons mots 18:03, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed your unblock request at the bottom of the page, which is where new postings should go to preserve the correct chronological order of discussions. An administrator will evaluate your request as soon as one becomes available. Please be advised that administrators, like all Wikipedia users, are volunteers; and the queue of unblock requests is long. Your request make take several days or even weeks to be reviewed, so please be patient. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 04:53, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for placing my request at top. I will post at bottom going forward.
Yes I see my blocking admin has over 11,000 blocks and roughly 1000 unblocks
As do most high performing administrators. Upon viewing their block records I see the insane volume of vandalism and shameless self promotion the volunteers here deal with.
If the administrators did not hastily repel all the vandalism wikipedia would be reduced to a unreadable compilation of poorly edited supplement pages and laid promotion pieces.
Its mind blowing the amount of time and effort that minority of volunteers gives. Thank god someone recognizes the necessity of this site. Im grateful every time I access it.
I beg whoever my request reaches to please see I am not a threat to wikipedia and have patiently waited for roughly 8 months.
I did not know the volume of people trying to destory this site every day, and felt like i was being unduly blocked. The naming policy here is unlike any other website. It seems arbitrarily strict unless viewed in the context i stated above. One could only learn that context by viewing an administrators block history.
I write this not to justify me calling a moderator pedantic. But to explain why I ever said what I did. It was not in an attempt to troll or waste the volunteers time. I apologize and have apologized above.
Thank you for your time. I am sorry to take any more of your time by writing this much. Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 03:43, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Deepfriedokra: given the history of productive edits, the time that has passed, and the apologies above, would you be amenable to an unblock once the username change is implemented? -- Ponyobons mots 19:54, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Deepfriedokra Thank you. I am sorry I took up any of your time with this process. I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to advocate for me. After I mocked you. And somehow following this wordy and months long talk page dispute to ensure I was given another chance to use my account, after you were insulted.
Thank you for recognizing the sincerity in me. @Ponyo
My understanding is limited, but I see the current request for a username change and unblock is still valid, so I will do nothing further. If any action is needed from my end to continue the process please just let me know. Tao.contracting.229 (talk) 07:03, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

YAY. Sorry I did not reply sooner. Thank you for generously processing all my requests, and I just saw your past attempt to check with me to confirm my username choice. You were wise to do so as I totally forgot the "Eternallygr8fu1" username and then proceeded to wonder why I couldn't log in anymore, until today. Otherwise I would of thanked you earlier.
It dawned on me the attempt may have processed and I used the Check User name search index and was able to see tao.contracting.229 no longer was registered. Then was able to find the new username I disremembered lol.
THANK YOU AGAIN to all of you, especially Deepfriedokra. You are the epitome of all that Wikipedia is. Benevolent and patient. Where so many would of probably highlighted all my errors in typing, or my strange and unnecessary choice of line spacing in my requests, you looked past all of that. After being mocked. And still came back for me in the end and ensured my accounts access was restored.
Much love, thank you. Eternallygr8fu1 (talk) 11:33, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
