Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, TAllen666. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Abingdon and Witney College, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. –Davey2010Talk 14:44, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

July 2015[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. At least one of your recent edits, such as the edit you made to Abingdon and Witney College, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at the welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make some test edits, please use the sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. –Davey2010Talk 15:36, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did at Abingdon and Witney College, you may be blocked from editing. –Davey2010Talk 11:25, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Davey2010|Davey2010]], The information that you are reverting this page to is factually incorrect and out-of-date. I have stated that I am a member of staff at the college on my user page and am simply trying to ensure all the information on this page is correct for members of the public. It is not our intention to advertise the college on Wikipedia and therefore all the information I have upload is fact. Please, instead of reverting the information back to false and out-of-date content, could you tell me what I need to do to ensure this content meets your standards? Kind regards, Tom Allen 12:40, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tom. I'm looking into this matter after your edits were reported. There are two issues:
  • You're trying to turn the encyclopedic article into a brochure. Yes, the info might be accurate, but it turns the article into a home page for the college.
  • As someone with a conflict of interest, you should not be editing the article directly but proposing changes using its talk page: Talk:Abingdon and Witney College
--NeilN talk to me 13:55, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you were not trying to advertise the college, then I wonder what the article would have looked like if you had been trying to do so, because the article after you had edited it read exactly like a promotional brochure or prospectus for the college. It was full of marketing-speak, and gave glowing accounts of what a good job the college does. Such language as "gives students a unique first-hand opportunity" and "The College is delighted to be able to offer this service and is looking forward to enhancing this provision over the next few years" is not neutral by any stretch of the imagination, and is not the sort of thing that any outside observer would have written: it is the sort of stuff that the college's PR staff might have produced. Nor are the detailed lists of courses appropriate: they belong on the college's own web site. I see that the information in the article does look out of date, and you are certainly in a position to help Wikipedia by informing us of what changes need to be made to deal with that. However, your claim to have been merely making factual corrections does not fit the facts: you added huge quantities of text evidently designed to persuade readers that your college is doing a great job. If you really do have factual corrections or updates then please state what they are on the article's talk page, and ask for a neutral, third party, editor to make the changes. To do that, post the template {{helpme}}, followed by a statement of what changes you want: that will alert editors who check for requests for help to your message. Please do not continue to post content more suitable for the college's web site or prospectus, though: doing so will be likely to lead to being blocked from editing.
