Hello T.Whetsell. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Armed Forces & Society, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. I don't really understand why you removed wikilinks from this page. However, several of your other edits are not acceptable. The article is about the journal, not about the people connected with it, so adding all kind of biographical info on them is inappropriate. Other stuff you added is just too promotional. As editorial assistant of this journal, you really should be very careful when editing this article. Crusio (talk) 22:27, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Response to Crusio

[edit]

I deleted wikilinks that were irrelevant to the article; for example, I deleted a link to "sex" in "Co-author sex." I don't see the point of linking every possible word to other articles, but if this is something you just have to do to promote wikipedia, ok. Also, I thought that a bit of biography about, now deceased, Janowitz would be important since his scholarship informed the philosophy and direction of the journal. Please identify which statements are too promotional so I will know which things to change. Generally, just be more specific with your criticism because I really don't see, at this point, how it is controversial at all, or how it demonstrated any bias.

Again- please specify exactly what you think is wrong with my edits, that is, if you are not going to just change them yourself.T.Whetsell (talk) 05:25, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 04:15, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Armed Forces & Society.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. License tagging for File:Armed Forces & Society.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Armed Forces & Society.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 00:06, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The above is a templated warning message. I read your userpage, and feel you might take it upon yourself to write on behalf of Dr. Shields or Armed Forces & Society. Conflict of interest editing is usually (not always, but usually) problematic. Please be careful. If you have questions, please by all means ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 19:55, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First, I'd just like to express my emerging frustration with anonymous users, who do not disclose potential conflicts of interest among themselves, and their willingness to point out potential conflicts of interest among users who do identify themselves.
That being said, I'm not sure what the purpose of your post is. Do you mean to state your opposition to the possibility that I might create a page about Shields, or are you attempting to assist me in doing a quality job? --T.Whetsell (talk) 20:24, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm unclear about your first paragraph. Are you asserting I have a conflict of interest with something? To the second paragraph, it is not at all uncommon that we have editors who come here at the behest of or on behalf of a person or organization they are closely affiliated with. Wikipedia:Conflict of interest is something that such editors should be aware of. My intent was solely to make you are of this issue. I've taken the liberty of refactoring your response into this section, and signing your comment for you. You can sign future comments with --~~~~, and it will add the signature for you. --Hammersoft (talk) 21:02, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Right, well if you note other comments made in this page, you will see that Crusio has already posted the COI template above. I am aware of the COI policies. Next, it is pretty clear what I meant with my first comment: it is ironic for anonymous users to point out potential COIs among users who choose to voluntarily disclose their identities. No, I did not assert that you have a COI, but that it would be impossible to determine even if you actually did, given that you have not disclosed your identity along with any potential COIs.

Setting aside irony, anonymity, and conflicts of interest, why don't we just work together to make these articles good ones instead of hinting at the use of a voluntary disclosure of identity as a weapon? For example, I need help with the license of the picture on the Armed Forces & Society entry. I am not sure if what I used there is sufficient. Can you help me with that? Also, I am trying to make an entry, which I am working on in my user drafts, here where I have had the same problem.T.Whetsell (talk) 21:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, so does that mean you are not going to help me with the license issue I am having on those two pages? T.Whetsell (talk) 02:27, 19 May 2011 (UTC) Sorry for over-reacting though.T.Whetsell (talk) 03:05, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Formal mediation has been requested

[edit]

Formal mediation of the dispute relating to Working hypothesis has been requested. As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. The process of mediation is voluntary and focuses exclusively on the content issues over which there is disagreement. For an explanation of what formal mediation is, see Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Policy. Please now review the request page and the guide to formal mediation, and then, in the "party agreement" section, indicate whether you agree to participate. Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page.

Request for mediation rejected

[edit]

The request for mediation concerning Working hypothesis, to which you were listed as a party, has been declined. An explanation of why it has not been possible for this dispute to proceed to formal mediation is provided at the mediation request page (which will be deleted by an administrator after a reasonable time). Questions relating to the rejection of this dispute can be directed to the Committee chairperson or e-mailed to the mediation mailing list. For more information on other available steps in the dispute resolution process, see Wikipedia:Dispute resolution.

A tag has been placed on File:Judith1LG.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Hi. When you recently edited Judith Black, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Storyteller (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from John Allen Williams with this edit. When removing content, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the content has been restored, as you can see from the page history. File:David Segal photo.JPG missing description details

[edit]
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:David Segal photo.JPG is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 02:23, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good news

[edit]

I noticed the little mess that you got yourself involved in, re: "John Allen Williams", and I've decided that you were right.

Not in how you went about it, mind you -- that, you did wrong. But you were right in your justification. So I replaced the redirect to the sniper with the article about the professor (something that admins can do but ordinary users can't). I also included a hatnote in the latter article pointing to the former, however -- just in case someone does look up the sniper by his original name. DS (talk) 18:03, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not replace pages with blank content, as you did with this edit to James Burk, as this is confusing to readers. The page's content has been restored for now. If there is a problem with the page, it should be edited or reverted to a previous version if possible; if you think the page should be removed entirely, see further information. Thank you. Orphaned non-free image File:Armed Forces & Society.png

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Armed Forces & Society.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:53, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Jamesburk.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Jamesburk.JPG, which you've sourced to James Burk. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:09, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello T.Whetsell,

It seems to me that an article you worked on, Lithuanian Research and Studies Center, may be copied from http://lithuanianresearch.org/eng/ltsceng/ltscenghome.htm. It's entirely possible that I made a mistake, but I wanted to let you know because Wikipedia is strict about copying from other sites.

It's important that you edit the article and rewrite it in your own words, unless you're absolutely certain nothing in it is copied. If you're not sure how to fix the problem or have any questions, there are people at the help desk who are happy to assist you.
