I saw your post at the help desk. I'm not sure what you mean by the side panel... if you mean the infobox this is edited in the same way as any other part by clicking 'edit source' at the top of the page. I haven't looked at the page myself but please bear in mind that Wikipedia reports on what has been published about a subject in independent, reliable sources. Adding things that are only drawn from your personal knowledge or experience is classed as original research and will not be accepted and is likely to be challenged if added. I've had a look at the page, the use of GM engines appears to be sourced; so if you wanted to change the make etc. you would need to provide sources ton corroborate your information. Eagleash (talk) 16:51, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Why we need published sources

Hi, and thanks for wanting to help. Our requirement for "reliable sources" may seem strange. After all, you knew your dad and he was a true expert. Unfortunately, we are forced to depend solely on information that has been published in a newspaper, book, or similar source. That's because we are a crowdsourced project that depends on anonymous volunteers, and we have no resources (or desire) to validate the identity and veracity of any of our contributors. In any given 30 day period, more than 100,000 different people make contributions to Wikipedia. We don't know who they are, and we don't know if they are reliable, so each of them must provide citations to reliable sources.

You can still help! Please try to find a source for you dad's observation so we can update the article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:34, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

OK, I found a reference, and your dad was correct, of course. I have corrected the article. The reference is a little bit weak, but the pre-existing references were questionable as they were part of a "canned" entry for the propulsion systems for the Balao-class subs. -Arch dude (talk) 18:11, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
