Can you be my mentor please

[edit]

Please. I have done so many violations on it that I need help fixing my mistakes. People are kinda worried because I'm not suppose to create categories. Maybe you could speak on my behalf. I'm wondering if you what categories are suitable to create and not suitable to create. I'm not banned yet you see; I just can't create categories I do have some mental health issues. Request your help in Post-it Notes page dispute

[edit]
Not exactly sure how to make this help request, but read you would be interested in helping resolve complex disputes.

A few Wikipedia editors over the last few years have been trying to introduce some factual (public 1997 Federal Court case records - AMRON vs 3M - and settlement reached) history onto both the ALAN AMRON and POST-IT NOTE Wikipedia pages.

Seems case law filed states Amron had in fact shown his invention of Press-on Memo in 1973 to 3M executives in 1974, when 3M then claimed to have invented it themselves. Without claiming or saying anything at all, at the very least Wikipedia should make the world aware of these historical facts about the invention of Post-it notes came from the invention of Press-on memo. I have, as you can see from my Talk on that Post-it note page, exhausted my efforts. If you could please read that talk page and suggest the correct wording to post that would allow the historical facts of the case and the settlement, the world will thank you. Post-it notes has a cult like following, and any facts about its origination or leading up to its creation is important. Wikipedia has become the place for one to find historical facts about anyone and or anything. Why not Post-it notes?

Up until today 3M has controlled and manipulated what is being said about who invented Post-it notes. Anyone else who trys gets knocked down.

(by talk page stalker) Steve is very involved at Wikipedia Australia right now and doesn't come around much, so let me respond on his behalf. Let me suggest that you ask for that help at the Teahouse. Another option would be Editor assistance, but I think you're more likely to get what you're looking for at the Teahouse. Hello Steven Zhang! I've noticed you around! I'm currently working on a project to bring as much of the wiki up to HTML5 compliance as I can. I've noticed that your signature uses some obsolete and deprecated elements, and I'm wondering if I can get you to update your signature. If you're willing to bring your signature up-to-date, I suggest replacing:

which will result in a 243 character long signature with an appearance of: Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes!

DRN needs assistance

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself as a volunteer at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard.

We have a backlog of cases there which need volunteer attention. If you have time available, please take one or more of these cases.

If you do not intend to take cases or help with the administration of DRN on a regular basis, or if you do not wish to receive further notices of this nature, please remove your username from the volunteer list. If you later decide to resume activities at DRN you may relist your name at that time.

Questions

[edit]

As one involved in SPIs, can you answer the following questions please.

1. If a checkuser spontaneously blocks a named account as a sock, with no SPI and no other discussion at all, should the blocked account be tagged as "confirmed" or as "suspected"?

2. Should a normal administrator (non-checkuser) blocking a named account ever tag it as "confirmed" when there has been no SPI and no checkuser involvement? 94.196.210.161 (talk) 22:12, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just for the record, answered here after being cross-posted to 11 users' talk pages. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 21:40, 6 March 2015 (UTC) (talk page stalker)[reply]

Somewhere I think there needs to be a note stating that User:LouisAragon has been split off from his as he is not related to Beh-nam and has his own SPI Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/LouisAragon/Archive. I've just unblocked him following a BASC appeal and am a bit concerned someone might once again try to link him to Beh-nam. Thanks. Oh, ping me if you reply, ok? DRN coordinator

[edit]

Hi Steve, welcome back! I probably don't need to say this but bear with me and let me get this off my chest.......... Last time as DRN coord you disappeared in the middle of your term without prior notice and it caused a bit of disruption. You did post a notice saying you were bailing out but only after being gone for about 2 weeks as I remember it. In any case because you are such a responsible person I have to think that you were facing a whole lot of real life stuff and it was the best you could do. But I'm mentioning it just in case. I have great respect for you as the founder of the DR noticeboard. I look forward to working together!. Best Wishes, --KeithbobTalk 18:40, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's fair enough. At that time, yes, things came up which meant I couldn't dedicate the time I wanted (and the role needed) to be the co-ordinator, and I did leave things in a bit of a lurch at that stage - sorry about that. Things are a little better now and I'm getting a bit better at separating my time spent on chapter work to time doing personal wiki-editing. But thank you for sharing your concerns with me, and I take them on board (congrats on being on MedCom, by the way! :) ) Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 03:27, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WV_NYC Case

[edit]

It is incorrectly written up, and should really be called Pearl S. Buck. It does appear to have had adequate discussion, but needs to be retitled. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:11, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know, I've updated it accordingly. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 03:16, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My advice on this case is to do a general close. It appears that the filing party is trying to use DRN to override a failed Requested Move. RM isn't listed as one of the usual dispute resolution mechanisms, but is sort of a specialized RFC, and DRN certainly doesn't outrank RM. Maybe I have misread it, but it looks like an attempt to bypass a failed RM. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:34, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree (please note I'm in Aus so timezones mean I don't always get to things as quick as you guys!). I'll comment there and close. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 23:51, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am the new user of Wikipedia, I am not aware of Requested Move. You are unnecessarily suspecting me of an failed RM. Which I have not initiated at all. I do not how it appears to you, when I have not done it at all. Now I will initiate the RM. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AVINHSN (talkcontribs) 17:58, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have raised the RM in Bangalore talk page. I have also suggested an workaround for the issue, where I hope that no one would object any more. Intention is not to remove Bangalore wiki page but to introduce new Bengaluru wiki page itself. As you are the expert wiki contributor, I request for your help and guidance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AVINHSN (talkcontribs) 18:52, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bantams Banter

[edit]

This issue is at Articles for Deletion. The heading at the dispute resolution noticeboard states that we don't take cases that are being handled at AFD, so I am recommending that you close it. I do note that one editor at AFD made the well-meaning but mistaken recommendation to request additional opinions at third opinion or WP:DRN. I also note that there is sock-puppetry involved. That will complicate closure of the AFD, but doesn't change the fact that the DRN request should be closed. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:15, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I agree, and I see @TransporterMan: closed it, as it should - it was around 3am here (even I have limits, I went to bed at 1 and was up at 5. Thanks for the heads up. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 21:30, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steven, I pinged you at ANI, but just in case that doesn't work: I've proposed closing the KK87 thread, with you mentoring him, and able to impose a topic ban of your choosing if you deem it necessary in the future. It didn't workIt did work, I just wasn't caffeinated enough to notice -_- Floquenbeam but thanks for the heads up. Appreeciate you giving me the flexibility for adding a topic ban later if it's needed. It looks good to me - I'll comment there. Cheers. p.s. I think it probably makes sense not to log the mentorship on the general sanctions page; if you decide a formal topic ban is needed, then I guess it would make sense to log it then. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:30, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: User:Steven Zhang/Adoption/Policies

[edit]

Well I read everything there, and there wasn't' anything I didn't know. I should be more aware though that editors edit to improve the encyclopedia. If I had followed the ignore uncivil behavior bit a few years ago I wouldn't be here now. I honestly want to write on things I have witnessed here on why it saddens me to see your great essay about WP:CIVIL but I wont because I don't think it would do much good. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:44, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I will have it to you tomorrow. I am going to make one more edit adding sources for an article then going to get some sleep. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:59, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing - what timezone are you in by the way? Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 02:00, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Eastern Time Zone, its 22:02 here. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 02:02, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My summary:
When using Wikipedia it is important to sign your posts so other editors know it was you. Edit summaries are useful as they let other editors know what portion of the article you edited. If you do something very minor like a typo or such checking off the "minor edit" box works as well. On Wikipedia editors use common sense, when building the encyclopedia not the editor's own common sense. Rules on Wikipedia you can pick up as you go along, if a rule prevents you from improving the encyclopedia then feel free to ignore it, but don't be reckless. Be bold when editing, but if you are reverted remember the basis of WP:BRD.
Vandalism is strictly prohibited on Wikipedia, and being uncivil can get other editors around you upset. If you see incivility just ignore it, or report it if it involves you. Undoing other's edits without discussion is considered edit warring, be sure to discuss what you dislike about the other person's edit on the talk-page if your edit is undone. Edits that are considered pure vandalism may be reverted without discussion. Other editors are here to improve the encyclopedia, having this mindset will allow you to assume good faith, and get along better with other editors. When creating an article, make sure it passes WP:GNG to warrant a separate article. When citing sources, make sure they are reliable, non self published, notable, and verifiable. Finally do not use Wikipedia for promotion. This isn't the place to get yourself famous or to write your resume.

Now for a question or two for you if you don't mind:

  • 1. Do you think it is okay to be uncivil if you have a good reason for it?
  • 2. Looking at WP:YANI, what are your thoughts?

- Knowledgekid87 (talk) 19:06, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the summary Knowledgekid87. You may answer the comments of 134.224 below (which interest me too, and I would care to read the answer). For your questions:
  • I work in dispute resolution, so no, I don't think it's ever OK to be uncivil, and I can't say theres ever a reason for it. You don't fight fire with fire. On IRC, someone once said something along the lines of "why are people dicks on Wikipedia" to which I responded to "Because you can't punch someone in the face on the internet". Extreme, but you get the point. If you wouldn't do something to someone in real life, don't do it here. There are other ways to discuss your concerns with someone apart from being uncivil.
  • I have mixed feelings about that page - I set up a few of and kept running a few dispute resolution processes, so at one point there was the feeling of "if I don't do it, someone else will". But then real life got in the way, and everything took care of itself. As for the component about behaviour, I agree with it, writing 50 FAs or being the best wikignome does not give you a free pass to act as you wish (see also this page). Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 22:59, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • My point there is one time I saw an editor say to another editor it was okay for his actions because he had good reason for it. The comment in question was deemed by other editors to be uncivil and the editor who said it was okay was an admin. So when I read your essay about civility for new users to me it read always be civil unless you have been deemed to be irreplaceable and essential to Wikipedia. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:16, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If Steven doesn't mind, I'd like to ask you, Knowledgekid, two or three questions:

  • You are talking about civility an awful lot. How would you define the concept, and why is it of so much importance to you?
  • Looking at WP:YANI again, two years ago a Portuguese IP added a paragraph that later got removed. What are your thoughts on the anon's comments?

134.224.220.1 (talk) 20:33, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Everyone looks at civility different what is okay, and what isn't okay there are different meanings in different cultures as well. To me civility is treating someone with respect, doesn't matter if they are new or old. If someone makes a mistake who is a newbie, work with them don't revert and bite their head off (WP:BITE). If someone is misbehaving, don't be quick to think they are a sock (WP:AGF). If other editors are telling you what you are doing is mean or unhelpful you should listen to what they say. Civility is important to me because I know that emotions online don't always stay online. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:19, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • As for your wiki-link, the flaw is that he/she assumes that only 20 people are willing to help out. You have to give people chances to grow and mature into a project not dismiss them outright. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:16, 10 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The editors are continuing to present their cases before a moderator has appeared. They aren't out of control the way that they were at Kashmir conflict, but they are continuing without leadership. I will leave it up to your judgment whether to ask them to wait until a moderator takes the case or just let them go. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:00, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

They are still adding more discussion. It might be time to ask for a volunteer to take the case now. If the discussion continues, then when a volunteer does take the case, they could have so much to work through that they might have to ask the posters to re-summarize, or they might be overwhelmed or something. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:38, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Is this a case you could take on for me? Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 22:04, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It occurs to me, looking over this long-running dispute thread, that there are really two separate issues. The first is the original issue of whether Rosaline should be included as an example. She always has been, but one of the two editors says that she should not be listed, and the other one wants her kept. They aren't about to compromise, so that either status quo is retained, or an RFC can be used. Second, they are also talking about how to improve the article, such as by adding additional scholarship. It appears to be two discussions that are not closely related except about the same article. Just a comment. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:10, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I don't think an RFC is needed here. I'll keep my eyes on the case. Cheers. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 22:05, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It appears the case has now been moved to the archive but is still marked as "in progress". Not sure if that is an error or a normal occurrence with DRN. 99.192.58.221 (talk) 13:34, 21 June 2015 (UTC) (=99.192.92.80)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Steven, has Knowledgekid87 been released from mentorship? I find this comment particularly disturbing because many of their prior, let's say, interventions related to matters involving Eric Corbett. As per usual, it is turning into a farce of a thread but Kk87 really shouldn't be anywhere near it, imo. - Sitush (talk) 23:10, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Already pinged Steven on KK87's talk page about this. I note that KK87 posted on ANI a few days ago in a very non-dramatic fashion (needed admin help). That kind of AN/ANI post needs to be encouraged. This kind needs to be discouraged. --Floquenbeam (talk) 23:13, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, my apologies and thanks Floq. I was under the impression that the normal thing to do was to approach the mentor, not the mentee (is that even a word?) I don't do much of this sort of thing, so please forgive any procedural faux pas. - Sitush (talk) 23:34, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Spotted, thanks all. Will address on their talk page. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 00:14, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh gosh, this is not a part of your restrictions but see User talk:Adjwilley. You'll probably already know of the miasma that develops from threads relating to Eric Corbett. As it happens, I am part of that miasma on this occasion, hence I spotted it. Not a healthy development, imo, but I'll leave it up to you. - Sitush (talk) 00:25, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You weren't a part of this "miasma" either. The Arb thread wasn't about you at all and you chose to go straight to EG's talkpage User talk:EvergreenFir#Sigh one minute after Green had posted saying "so no real need to go running to mummy". So please don't give me "As it happens, I am part of that miasma on this occasion". - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:51, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The only request I have here is that you exempt Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:39, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can I ask for a consensus that "the potential violation was of insignificant magnitude" now that I am topic banned? [3]. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 03:46, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

All I see there is that the thread has been closed. You're not understanding the purpose of the topic ban. Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga is exempted. I will give you the code to add to your mono book/vector file soon. Thanks. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 04:02, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What I see is that if someone violates their topic ban but the violation is insignificant then they can walk from it. I made two non disruptive posts at WP:AN which was quickly pounced upon by two editors. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 04:06, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Have you removed ANI from your watch list as previously requested (and committed to, by you?) 04:08, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Yes I have. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 04:09, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thank you. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 04:10, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Would these fall under the scope?:

These involve discussions regarding content. Among other things I also maintain the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Anime and manga. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:03, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, they fall under the scope, and the exemption doesn't apply in this case. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 01:09, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What im saying then is that I cant archive finished AfDs to here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Deletion Archive without editing Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Anime and manga. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 01:20, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alright then, Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Anime and manga is also exempted. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 01:25, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Quark Thread

[edit]

The dispute labeled Talk: Quark doesn't seem to be about the article Quark. It isn't clear what it is about. However, two editors are going on and on without the case being accepted. If it is really a policy question rather than a content dispute, it should probably be closed, with answers to the questions about what the rules are. In any case, I think it needs attention quickly. Kashmir Conflict thread

[edit]

There is reverting in the Kashmir conflict thread. Human3015 edited a post by an unregistered editor. The unregistered editor reverted the edits, saying not to edit the comments of others. This might be an off-by-one, but it may need a quick look to see whether it needs to be addressed further. I am also notifying [[User:TransporterMan]. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:49, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: IP was given version supported by me or others and version supported by IPs, but he was not given any references in version supported by us, so I just added some references to it as it was projected as our version, but IP reverted it, so I made my separate comment regarding current version. Nothing else. But I do think that this issue should be resolved as soon as possible. You should look for is there any need of further discussion. --Human3015 knock knock • 16:55, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Steve can address this, to the extent necessary, if any, without our help, Robert. I see it as nothing more than an procedurally-misguided attempt to be collaborative, i.e. a technical error committed in good faith, which was performed in a proper manner after being reverted. No harm, no foul, and certainly no need to sound the alarm bells or inflame matters further by supporting by implication one editor's complaint against the other. — TransporterMan (TALK) 17:44, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert McClenon: and @TransporterMan: But Human3015 also continuously reverted edits deleting disputed para rather then waiting for DRN decision about how para should shape up resolving dispute. Is not this disrespecting community standards i.e. remaining patient and not to make WP a battle ground as well as disrespecting a subjudice matter under dispute resolution mechanism . see https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Kashmir_conflict&action=history Note edit count since dispute arises=11 115.186.146.225 (talk) 08:31, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert & @TransporterMan (not pinging) - thanks for your comments. I don't think the edit at DRN is an issue, I'm more thinking it was an error if nothing else. The rest I will address at DRN. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 09:43, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

KK87 2

[edit]

Steven, what's with KK87's edit to Beeblebrox's talkpage? It's well-known that Beeb is in the anti-Corbett camp. Such remarks are within the letter but outside the spirit of his topic ban, after all this kind of pot-stirring and ankle-biting is what put him under mentorship to begin with. It needs to stop right quick. 134.224.220.1 (talk) 13:52, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He's on short leash, but I'm not going to apply a choke hold to him. Thank you for making me aware of it, but at this time I don't feel I need to take any action, but I will monitor. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 13:58, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Steven, I wish such behavior would be looked on more sternly. It demonstrates well everything that's wrong with codes-of-conduct. If KK's remark had been of a sexual nature, or if it had made reference to ethnic affiliation, disability, or any of the things traditionally mentioned in your average code-of-conduct there would be no question, he would be dealt with. But this latest one is part of the same pattern that his mentorship is supposed to correct, yet he keeps carrying on and on with his harrassment.
It's also the reason for me asking KK about the definition of "civility" a couple of weeks back. The answer would be something like behavior in support for a common purpose. Back again to codes of conduct: they prescribe negative behavior but don't direct positive behavior. The popular groups of harassment are protected, and the unpopular ones are as badly off as always. It's a sad state of affairs. 134.224.220.1 (talk) 14:14, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I feel civility is very important as well (it's something I demand as someone that has done dispute resolution for so long). I won't comment further on my personal views on civility, other than to re-assert that I will be keeping an eye on him (and what he said I really can't take any action on him based on the comment he left (which, without understanding any of the context to me reads as "the essay you wrote is useful to me, it seems you're dealing with a situation such as this at the moment, I feel that contributors that produce quality contributions deserve respect but everyone deserves basic respect and when quality contributors mess up it makes the situation difficult".) You may not know, but I've taken people I've mentored to ArbCom personally and they've been banned as a result, so don't think I'm soft on people. But he needs a little bit of time to learn. (and if it continues, then I will come down upon him like a ton of bricks). You have given your opinion here, and I thank you for it. But I would now ask that you allow me to perform my role and keep an eye on him from here (and I have nevertheless left him a message asking him to keep his head down. Cheers. Would you do me a favor and at least look into this IP address? There has been no article creation or content related work that I can see since May 11th. The IP seems though to be keen on following me around as if its a single purpose account. This to me is approaching WP:HOUNDING. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:02, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I'm afraid not much I can do - I don't have access to the tool but even if I did, fish CheckUser is not for fishing. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 16:32, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
At this point would you see it as WP:HOUNDING? This IP has been only following my edits for a month now. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:38, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

- I see four or five edits? No, I don't see that as wikihounding at this stage. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 23:28, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kashmir Conflict

[edit]

I tried to post a comment to you on this talk page, mentioning that one of the editors was complaining that you weren't reading his posts, which obviously you were. I mistakenly posted to the DRN talk page, for which I apologize. In any case, the editor then said that I agreed that you hadn't been paying attention, and I disagreed. At this point the editor is requesting a replacement moderator. He says that he has asked six questions and you haven't answered. Since that discussion has been going on a long time inconclusively, it might be time to close or fail moderation. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:04, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to close it at 00:00 UTC. I've no issues with closing it as failed - some of the other participants have walked away and this is becoming a discussion between me and one IP. As I stated on DRN, there are reasons I'm not answering his questions, namely that they are not part of why the DRN thread was raised and DRN is not a "let's resolve all issues with article X" forum. A tiny localised consensus (which in this case, I think is a stretch) does not override Wikipedia policy (undue weight) and I see some serious POV pushing here. Not responding to one's comments I deem off topic is not ignoring them. Thanks for commenting here - I know he twisted what you said into something else. Steven Zhang Help resolve disputes! 21:12, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sir Steve thanks a lot for your honest efforts. As a human i say sorry if in the heat of the moment during any argument I hurt you. so what if DRN failed our sprit as a community will always remain in tact. Respects 115.186.146.225 (talk) 11:47, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
