Steve, please refer to the wikipedia article about lift, it is not only the wing's cross-section that enables it to generate lift, symmetrical wings generate lift as well. The "Bernoulli" explanation provides some of the lift, but there is also the Newtonian angle of attack which deflects the air downwards.
