Regarding this edit which has been reverted: those were not references, but merely a list of links to Wikipedia articles with no indication of how they related to the article at hand. When an article such as your ThreeJars article is tagged as "unreferenced", what it means is that it lacks citations to reliable sources that can be used to verify the content of the article. I am trying to add legitimate references to the ThreeJars page but it isn't working. Please help as clearly I am not following the instructions correctly.

Steph, I've added a few references that I found to the ThreeJars page. You can use these as a template for adding your own references. In general, I have found these citation templates very useful:

{{cite web}} for use when citing a web page
{{cite news}} for use when citing a newspaper article
{{cite journal}} for use when citing a technical journal or magazine article
{{cite book}} for use when citing a book.

If you click on those links, they will bring you to the documentation page of the templates which should guide you in how to use them.

Note that all of these templates have an entry for a URL; if you find a citation from an online version of a newspaper, I would suggest using the cite news rather than the cite web template, as the cite news template provides a more standardized reference to the newspaper story. The same is true for all of the other templates; use the cite web as your template of last resort if none of the others seems quite right.

To help you understand what the bot message above is telling you, let me point you to some useful Wikipedia policies:

External links defines which external links should be included in an article, and (more to the point) which should not. Links to blog sites (which is what Wordpress is) are to be avoided.
Reliable sources defines what sources to consider when providing references to articles. In general, we look for sources in mainstream media that has undergone some sort of editorial review process, including fact-checking. Most newspapers and magazines pass this criterion; most blogs do not.
