Basically, each does an automated set of edits using your user account. For general editing you may want to check Wikipedia:Tools/Editing tools.

Citation tools can be found at Wikipedia:Citation tools. Really, there's a large number programs that can help make you editing easier, less tedious, and more stream lined.

You may also want to take a look at your user preferences, and see if you want to tweak things more to your liking. The gadgets tab has a few of the above mention tools set as options you can activate. Personally, I haven't used any of them except for one, WP:HOTCAT, a tool to make editing categories easier.
