question
[edit]Stan, we talked briefly a while back about lightship categories, so i thought i would drop you a line since you're semi-familiar with my work. i'm currently running for an admin position so i thought i'd let you know if you wanted to check out the vote page. If you like my work and think i'm worthy, i'd appreciate you checking it out. thanks in advance and if you ever need anything drop me a message. --ScottyBoy900Q 01:30, 12 October 2005 (UTC)
"Stamp drawer"
[edit]Hello. I have a question about semantics and the opportuny of creating a new subcategory into Cat:Philately : Category:Postage stamp drawer ?
- I think it is needed like on fr: and de: and can bring into light people that usually are forgotten ("were" in France where they are very mediatized by the French philatelic litterature since the 1990's).
- If agreed, what would be the correct formulation in english, please ?
Thank in advance and if you're agree, I start categorizing the sooner the better since I've got vacation. Have a good evening. Sebjarod 19:37, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
- I'll use Category:Stamp designers (category are always plural on en.wiki if I well remember).
- Yes, some engravers actually create the design of some stamps they engrave. On fr.wiki I use a lone category to have in one cateogry all artists involved in stamp design, and other categories put them in their originate category (C:engravers or C:illustratrors, etc.).
- Thank for the answer and with some translation work, some French stamp designers will arrive soon. Good evening. Sebjarod 17:42, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
- On de:, a user used his passion for Feroese stamps to add some artists ; on fr:, I simply open a stamp magazine to find enough to fill a stub et Dallay catalog to add a quite complete list of stamps.
- Are stamp designers known by philatelists in the anglo-saxon world (US, UK, etc.), except the great Slania ? Do english-written stamp catalogs give the designer's name ? Sebjarod 17:51, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Crown copyright publication date versus creation date

Image galleries on commons
[edit]Hey, thanks for stopping by my talk page. You mentioned setting up "parallel structure of galleries corresponding to ship articles". I was just wondering if you could give me an example of what you mean. I admit I have been somewhat reluctant of using commons due to the ocassional drudge that is loading times. However the duplicate image indicator has peaked my curiousity. -- Malo 16:35, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
Your help would be appreciated
[edit]Hi Stan, I am currently requesting review for the Bjørnøya article and since you have recently edited there, I thought you might like to look into it again. Fish categorization
[edit]Hi Stan. I'd like to extend my thanks for your untangling and recategorization of fish articles, which was long, long overdue. It's greatly appreciated! I hope you've been well. :) -- Hadal 08:30, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
Your quote on Carl's talk page
[edit]Hi, I probably shouldn't respond to this at all, but I took some offense to calling this entier affair nitpicking. While this might be true of some part (e.g. the edit summaries and the capitalisation) it is (in my humble opinion) not true for the rest. Might I sugget that you read some of the pages cited on User:R.Koot/Request for Comments on User:CarlHewitt for a more complete picture of the situation? Cheers, —R. Koot 21:55, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Please see my response to your (that is User:Stan Shebs') comment on Hewitt's talk page.--CSTAR 21:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- As you specified no quantification, you can't blame me for interpreting it as universal quantification. I have enough trust in the ArbCom that they will see that there are enough real problems appart from the nitpicking. Have you already read the pages referenced in User:R.Koot/Request for Comments on User:CarlHewitt? While Carl is indeed an expert on the actor model, he is also making some claims on subject such as physics, mathematics and logic. It has became clear that the amateur here is Carl and the experts are the Wikipedia editors with PhD's in these respective field. Cheers, —R. Koot 22:51, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- If you had read all the material it should have been clear that we have been talking to Carl for over three months now. —R. Koot 23:32, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- Stan, I strongly advise you to dig around a bit before issuing an opinion. Carl Hewitt has gotten himself into a whole heap of trouble for some very serious reasons and continues to willfully violate all sorts of norms of appropriate WP behavior. linas 03:54, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Stan Shebs remarks directed to R. Koot
[edit]Excuse me, do you normally go around putting insulting remarks about other editors? Although I didn't support the request for aribitration, I did discuss various versions of it, suggested various improvements and alternate courses of action. For your information I do have a PhD in math (from Harvard) I am a fairly experienced WP editor. I really, really resent what you wrote, much more than anything anybody else has written. --CSTAR 02:06, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
Pic of the day
[edit]Hi Stan,
Just to let you know that your photo Image:Zermatt and Matterhorn.jpg is due to make a reappearance as Pic of the Day on the 2nd of December. I've reused the same caption as last time, but if you want to make any changes you can do so at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/December 2, 2005. -- Solipsist 22:57, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- Curiously, I've just noticed that this photograph is no longer included on the Matterhorn page, which is the primary linked article. Should we re-add the picture to Matterhorn, are change the trust of the caption to point more to Zermatt? -- Solipsist 11:08, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Battle Stars
[edit]I was rereading the USS Missouri (BB-63) article and got to the part about the battle stars the ship earned: Three for service in WWII and five for service in Korea. Then it occured to me that Missouri also participated in the First Gulf War. Shouldn't she have gotten a battle star for that? TomStar81 23:50, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks!
[edit]Hi -- I just wanted to say thanks for making your photo of the surfer (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Oahu_North_Shore_surfing_hand_drag.jpg) available for free under the GFDL. I've used it on p. 47 of my physics book Vibrations and Waves (http://www.lightandmatter.com/area1book3.html). The book is dual licensed under the GFDL and cc-by-sa, and you are credited in the photo credits on p. 90.--Bcrowell 02:49, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Civic arms
[edit]Hello. I see you are adding some of the civic arms to articles. Unfortunately they are all defunct arms i.e no longer used and the way they have been added in articles suggests they are current. Also in the case of Chelmsford the arms were for a district which surrounded the town but did not include it. Please watch out for this if you consider adding any others. Mrsteviec 17:02, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- As luck would have it some editors and I have been creating articles about the defunct districts these arms actually belong to. I will have a look and see if these can be tied together. Mrsteviec 17:09, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- I've had a look and done a few and can see that I will be able to salvage all the UK ones. Mrsteviec 17:24, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Fair use images
[edit]Thanks for the tip, I'll be happy to help classify the fair use images further with the suggested template. I'm trying to make all ff-images more legal; leave me a message if I ever could help anymore in classifying them, or if I make a mistake. DarkEvil 15:36, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I just read your comment to User:CSTAR, and while I think I understand why you wrote that, I think you misunderstood why users like CSTAR, EMS, Linas, myself, .... (four active editors right there) were all so upset with User:CarlHewitt. I hope you will take time to look over User:Hillman/Wikipedia_quality_control#Comments_regarding_the_Carl_Hewitt_RfAr and to consider leaving a "peace dove" message I can pass on to CSTAR, since apparently your comment was the last straw which broke the Camel's back. I don't think a retraction is neccessary, just an acknowledgement that (as I assume is the case) you didn't look over the entirety of our attempts to persuade Carl that his articles were most inappropriate at WP, and that you might not have fully understood our problem with Carl's WP activity. Reason: I'm hoping to persuade CSTAR to return here. ---CH 00:52, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Sigh... well, I had good intentions but now I think I should have stayed out of your quarrel with CSTAR (or whatever I should call it). Thanks for dropping my talk pages, though. ---CH 22:46, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Russian Museum pic
[edit]Hi Stan, I tried to address your concerns. St Petersburg is 800 km from the place I live in, so a drive would take time ;). Everyday I notice pictures that are being downloaded without any tags at all (e.g., Image:Narikala,_Tbilisi.jpg and other images by the same uploader). There are other untagged images that have been gracing some major articles for ages - Image:Katedra_na_wawelu.jpg in Krakow, Image:Warszawa2.jpg in Warsaw, Image:Klostera_iela.jpg in Riga. I pointed out them to admins but they seem to be more interested in waging war against fairuse tags ;( --Ghirlandajo 13:47, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Re; File:PAG.JPG
[edit]Hey STan, I'm gonna be honest: I have no idea how this copywrite thing works. It seems like now matter how I tag a picture, it gets flagged for deletion.
How do you know that the copyright on that image had expired? I agree that it is likely, but I'm not sure at all, which is why I had tagged it back when as "fair use". Maybe there's something we've been missing on Wikipedia:Public domain? Lupo 08:16, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think I'll change it back. ({{Non-free fair use in}} didn't exist when I uploaded the image...) I try to tag images as PD only when I'm sure that they really are because our PD templates make such bold claims ("world-wide"). (I have goofed occasionally, though.) What has 1936 got to do with it? If you're thinking of "70 years ago", please note that (a) it's only 69 years by now, and far more importantly (b) that the rule is "70 years after the death of the photographer", not 70 years after publication. And anyway, how do you know it wasn't taken later? It might easily date from anywhen between 1933 and about 1941. (I have found other postcards from 1941, and I consider it unlikely there were any later ones printed during the war.) Just curious as to how you arrived at 1936... Lupo 14:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
I suspect that all the images used in this article are non-free. Two of them are tagged as fairuse, but, given their dimensions and quality, they can hardly be described as such. Also, no source is given. Please look into the matter. --Ghirla | talk 11:32, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Images
[edit]Thanks for your message. I appreciate your vigilance on my behalf, but the problem is that, now that I look at it again, I don't think that is actually one of mine. I took a lot of photos of the Acropolis and since it was three years ago I am getting a bit vague about which ones are mine. I had forgotten that I claimed it as mine at my gallery. I think I will now delete it. Adam 08:02, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Bob Kershaw
[edit]Hi, great work on the Bob Kershaw article so far, especially considering the paucity of online references. Unfortunately I don't have any information about either Kershaw and Frost close to hand, but I'll go through my books to see if I can dig up some more, and I'll try get my hands on a copy of Brown's book. As you said, there's an interesting story to be told about these men, yet most of the information is usually buried in obscure publications and long out of print books, so I think it's great to give them increased exposure on Wikipedia. — Impi 10:19, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Whack bogus template. Why?
[edit]Please explain why you would remove the totally valid 'Category:Irish postage stamp images' template from the 'Irl_1989_sheridan.jpg' image? This IS an Irish postage stamp image, so what's the problem? Adding this template means other users can find the image more quickly while browsing the category. Later I will be writing an article about this person. ww2censor 15:38, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for explanation. I might have to come back to you about the dedicated templete. ww2censor 17:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Comic pics
[edit]- By definition, a comic cover's source is always known - it is the publisher, whose name even conveniently appears on the cover so there is no doubt. So it is nonsensical to add {{no source}} to those images. Similarly for comic panels. Stan
See WP:CENT/FUC - the source of the scan itself is important too. If you disagree, say so on that talk page before it's finalised.
Oh, and I fail to see how you can tell the comic a panel came from just by looking at it, unless you're familiar with the comic itself. - SoM 20:28, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Frank Crean
[edit]I don't have a degree in copyright law, so no, I cannot provide a detailed explanation of why this image is fair use. My real basis for using it is that I have written permission from the copyright holder to do so. If that is not good enough then you might as well delete it, and all the others I have added on the same basis, and I will wash my hands of the whole sorry business. Adam 08:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
OK then I give up. Delete it. I must say though that if anyone thinks Wikipedia is remotely ready to be put into print or any other commercial product, or is ever likely to be under its present structure, they are kidding themselves. For Crean I have the 1953 Handbook, in which he appears as a young MP. Since that edition is entirely clear of copyright I will upload that photo when I get home from my current travels. Adam 16:40, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
French military images
[edit]I'm afraid that copyright on products of the French government is a somewhat complex topic. On the one hand, certain documents of a legal or administrative nature (for instance, the text of laws and regulations) cannot be copyrighted (or more appropriately, their use is free), that's for sure. On the other hand, the government can copyright certain data produced for commercial or quasi-commercial purposes (say, software produced in national technological laboratories). In the middle is a large grey area.
While many government services like to claim copyright on their images (in order to control their usage, presumably), some legal scholars allege that the government or public establishments cannot hold copyrights unless their stated purpose is to produce intellectual property. Since the job of the military is to provide defense, in this interpretation the use of these images is free.
This is a very complex topic and we're working right now with French legal scholars to get some clarification. David.Monniaux 19:18, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
We're still working on clearing that up. This is somewhat hairy. (I've had the Webmaster of the Ministry on the phone today, and essentially they give us a free license for our sites, as long as we're informative, which is "fair use". The problem is that he cannot grant authorization for commercial reuse, so we're applying to a higher level.)
In any case, this is independent of claims of fair use under US law. David.Monniaux 13:50, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
video-screenshot
[edit]Hi, you just re-tagged Image:Banyenrakgan.jpg with
This image is a screenshot from a copyrighted video, and the copyright for it is most likely held by the individual or company which produced the video, and possibly also by any actors appearing in the screenshot. It is believed that the use of a limited number of low-resolution screenshots
qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of the United States. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information.

, which doesn't seem to exist. Is something broken? Mark1 19:21, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Hi, do you think this image is fairuse and may be tagged {bookcover}? IMHO it is neither low-resolution, nor does it illustrate the book in question. I'm not sure what to do with it. --Ghirla | talk 23:34, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Apple Computer
[edit]The article on Apple Computer is filled with unverifiable opinion, hearsay, and editorialization. There is a Wikipedia enthusiast out there who will not allow anyone to remove the nonsense. I agree with your comment about tweaking it, to improve the article. Might you try to remove the opinions (see history -- someone was trying to do that, but it was undone).
- Stan, I believe the "enthusiast" in question is me. The above unsigned comment by an anon IP is probably User:MathStatWoman having logged out in an attempt to hide her identity. Hmmmm... I agree a review of the history will reveal the truth... anyway, there are definitely some areas that need improvement as discussed in the proper place, but wholesale deletion would seem not to be the answer. So far I have reverted to the status quo. Graham 12:23, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
One more thing. As an admin, are you able to check a user's IP address? If so, can you have a look and see if user:DeveloperFrom1983 is the same as user:MathStatWoman? (IP something like 151.197.161.81) One disappeared at the same time as the other appeared, both editing the same article, both using similar language and making similar points. DelevoperFrom1983 is adding a lot of stuff to Apple Computer which I believe is inappropriate (all the Drexel seeding stuff, for example), though it might find a home elsewhere. There are too many edits being made too quickly to deal with right now; I'm getting tired and I need to sleep. But I would like to know if there is some sockpuppetry going on. Graham 15:14, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Deleted images
[edit]Stan, while checking my user page I noticed that one of the images linked from it disappeared without a trace. I discovered that three images uploaded by me long ago under fairuse licence - File:Krom.jpg, File:Krutitsy.jpg, - were removed by OrphanBot from the articles on Pskov, Krutitsy, Zvenigorod and deleted without prior notification of myself as the uploader. In the past, when OrphanBot removed fairuse images, I instantly provided the source and restored the images to the article. Can you explain to me why this rule was disregarded in this case and who deleted the images? --Ghirla | talk 17:15, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

greetings
[edit]Since you sent me a message, I assume that it is acceptable that I contact you.
First, you should know that I am new to Wikipedia. Second, you should know that I am an old retired professor of computer science. Most of the editors on Wikipedia seem to be much younger than I. Third, no, I did not attempt a major edit. I added a sentence or two from the era through which I lived and worked, thinking it would be interesting. Fourth, I think that it is ironic that Wikipedia is supposed to be edited by anyone, yet the page about Wikipedia is un-editable!
I had the unique opportunity to be witness to the development of the modern computer, to teach FORTRAN, BASIC, and APL; to meet and speak with people like Grace Murray Hopper (who is not even mentioned within the article about Computers or computer science, which is unforgiveable -- but the Wikipedia editors don't let me add the information that I have gathered through the years and decades.

Addendum
[edit]Also, I am surprised and disturbed that it is acceptable to the editors at Wikipedia that insulting language to someone like me is acceptable (as per GRAHAMUK), that is it deemed quite all right to call me insulting names when my intentions were all good. Are these the ways and means of the younger folks? I think not, given how polite my students, children, and grandchildren are. DeveloperFrom1983 21:39, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Which insulting language are you referring to? I did not intentionally use insulting language, but you do seem to be making rather a mountain out of a molehill. Graham 06:26, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

With apologies to Stan Shebs
[edit]I am sorry that all this occurs on your user talk page, Stan Shebs. However, here it is. Graham (also known as Grahamuk) told me that I am a sockpuppet when I always sign in, so this is incorrect. But he told me that I should stop editing because I was annoying people. Is this not an insult? I have stopped editing, and Wikipedia will not benefit from my persepective, or perhaps the "experienced" editors believe that we older folks are "fools" ( a favorite word of Gramamuk) and our insight is of no value. Yes, Graham is prone to insults. He calls others "monkeys" as well as "fools". In UK and Australia, is this civil language? DeveloperFrom1983 06:33, 16 January 2006 (UTC)
