Unbundling the tools

Hi Sonia. You said yourself that you would probably regret this. I though we had buried the hatchet, but unfortunately, at least in my opinion, I believe you might again have demonstrated that you may still possibly have a penchant for taking things out of context and/or putting an unintended spin on other editors' syntax. I value you work here highly, but I do feel I must defend my comments once again. Happy new year to you. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:36, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Hatchet re your RfA long since buried on my part, although I'm not sure if your "again" is meant to allude to my having misrepresented you both now and at that occasion. Either way, I stand by both comments. Here's to 2012, and a more productive RFA2012, perhaps. sonia02:53, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I will allude also to the fact that you quite erroniously quoted RFA2011 as being unproductive - you obviously missed the immense work on research and suggestions that have been done and made there. Perhaps you'd like to consider joining the project and helping it along instead of simply joining its detractors and criticising it. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:59, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Given that we tend to find ourselves in direct conflict with each other, I feel that my presence might be to the detriment of the project (or at least its unity); as such, thanks, but I'll pass. sonia03:20, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
We're not really in conflict with each other, we just have different opinions on things, but I do feel that where I am concerned, you misunderstand what I say, and because you are generally a very sensible person, othesr tend to trust your judgement and pile-on. I don't know how you interact with others, but I would imagine that you are a very friendly and helpful person. If you are concerned with the current situation at RfA - and I assume you are because you post on RfA and adminship related forums - the offer to join the RFA2011 project is genuine, with the proviso that its active contributors are positively engaged with any suggestions that can reasonably be examined. There is a lot of hard work being done there, and any comments that the project is not getting anything done are inaccurate - do take a look and browse its numerous pages, there has never been such a concentrated and focused effort to research the RfA issues in the entire history of Wikipdia. I certainly laud Dcoetzee's initiative, but I defend the right to point out where I believe it's the wrong solution to the wrong problems, and that the RfC itself is flawed. I also feel very strongly that such proposals would have more impact and exposure if they came with the support of a well established Wikipedia project. All that said, if you feel that you and I cannot work together, let me give give us both the advice that I give to others, by suggesting that we no longer reply to each other's comments on project pages, unless of course, we are supporting each other's views. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:04, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
You're right in that we're not necessarily in conflict. Poor choice of wording there. However, I think we agree that our different opinions, goals and ways of approaching things mean that working together constructively would be quite a challenge. With this in mind, your observation that people tend to follow my lead seems to back up my point that my participation in RFA2011 would create discord among the well-intentioned people working there to improve the RfA process. I don't see why it should be a black-and-white choice between "join us or speak to me no more"; I'm perfectly happy for us to just go on our separate ways and interact as any two editors would, and for you to reply to (or misinterpret, for that matter) my comments whenever you like.
That said... since I'm apparently "generally a very sensible person" who has the trust of the community, perhaps you could reconsider your stance on Dcoetzee's proposal. I don't see much harm in such a controlled trial taking place, and we can all find out for sure whether it's "the wrong solution to the wrong problems", instead of speculating :) sonia02:05, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm afraid there is no way I can change my stance on Decotezee's proposal for all the reasons I have already stated, the summary of which is that I feel it does not address any of the problems with admidminship or its electioral process. The fact the the RfC itself is flawed is a Nebensache. Subjectively, I didn't go through hell week to embark on a course that would make access to the tools any easier for trophy collectors or power seekers. It should be clear by now that my mission is to clean up the current process from the lies, deceit, incivility, bullying, and unreflected voting that has all but destroyed what is otherwise - in theory at least - the best system that is in place. Until some proposals to make it a more hygienic environment that will be made this year by RFA2011 have been rejected by the community, I see no need to examine alternatives. That said, there is nevertheless a section in the project (which I do not subscribe to) at WP:RFA/RADICAL that discusses and suggests other methods. The vast resources and research that have been done by the RfA project are free for anyone to consult, as is the experience of its adherents and I have never, ever, even slightly hinted in the vaguest sense "join us or speak to me no more". The day I utter such an abominable construct will be the day I gladly lay down my tools, retire from Wikipedia, and leave it to rot in the hands of people who hate younger editors and defend the use of personal attacks and filthy language. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:38, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Re D: noted. Re my wording: Whoa. I was generalizing the options that appeared to be presented (we're not in conflict, so we should be able to work together: as such, do join project. If you feel we can't: maybe we should stop replying to each other in project space.) in a vaguely melodramatic-sci-fi way. Apologies for the whimsy. Didn't mean to offend or create an abomination. Glad you're not about to either, though-- this place needs as many constructive editors (and as few abominable constructs of any sort) as possible. sonia07:41, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - notes and office hours

Hey guys! Another month, another newsletter.

First off - the first bits of AFT5 are now deployed. As of early last week, the various different designs are deployed on 0.1 percent of articles, for a certain "bucket" of randomly-assigned readers. With the data flooding in from these, we were able to generate a big pool of comments for editors to categorise as "useful" or "not useful". This information will be used to work out which form is the "best" form, producing the most useful feedback and the least junk. Hopefully we'll have the data for you by the end of the week; I can't thank the editors who volunteered to hand-code enough; we wouldn't be where we are now without you.

All this useful information means we can move on to finalising the tool, and so we're holding an extra-important office hours session on Friday, 6th January at 19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. If you can't make it, drop me a note and I'll be happy to provide logs so you can see what went on - if you can make it, but will turn up late, bear in mind that I'll be hanging around until 23:00 UTC to deal with latecomers :).

Things we'll be discussing include:

  • The design of the feedback page, which will display all the feedback gathered through whichever form comes out on top.
  • An expansion of the pool of articles which have AFT5 displayed, from 0.1 percent to 0.3 (which is what we were going to do initially anyway)
  • An upcoming Request for Comment that will cover (amongst other things) who can access various features in the tool, such as the "hide" button.

If you can't make it to the session, all this stuff will be displayed on the talkpage soon after, so no worries ;). Hope to see you all there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 04:49, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Um! Is that... seven tomorrow morning? Something like that? Might drop in from my cellphone just to take a look. I've received word-of-mouth feedback which y'all might find useful (or not). sonia08:27, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
FWIW, It's 08:00 NZDT. Graham87 15:56, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

Brian McNicholl

Hi Sonia, Brian McNicholl was a New Zealand-born Australian Paralympian, primarily a weightlifter. Laura, John and I are having a bit of trouble finding information about him, especially related to his early career in New Zealand (see his talk page). When you get a chance, could you search through the resources you have in NZ and let me know if you find anything of interest? Thanks! Graham87 03:29, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Will do! Derrick and I are doing stuff together for the next couple of days, but I'll do so at some point this week. sonia07:41, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Awesome! Graham87 15:57, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Grar. No luck with the UofA's online resources, but I may be on campus tomorrow, will check offline then. I think I have further access to stuff through my library subscription, I just need to remember my password to that :p sonia21:55, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Nothing there either. sonia03:58, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh well. Thanks for checking, anyway. Graham87 16:22, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - things to do

Hey guys! A couple of highly important things to do over the next few weeks:

  • We've opened a Request for Comment on several of the most important aspects of the tool, including who should be able to hide inappropriate comments. It will remain open until 20 January; I encourage everyone with an interest to take part :).
  • A second round of feedback categorisation will take place in a few weeks, so we can properly evaluate which design works the best and keeps all the junk out :P. All volunteers are welcome and desired; there may be foundation swag in it for you!

Email

I'd like to email an news article to you but your Wikipedia email tool is disabled. If you want it to stay disabled but you're willing to get an email from me, please contact me through my email tool. Thanks! Pinetalk 20:53, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Wait, really? I have never disabled email. Please do try special:emailuser/sonia again and see if that works for you; if not, I'll flick you my address later today. sonia21:46, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I've had D try to email me now, it seems to work fine. I'm mystified. sonia22:01, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
I can see special:emailuser/sonia when I click it, but it doesn't appear in the toolbox in the left column. Shouldn't it be there? Pinetalk 07:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Have you enabled the gadget for "dropdown menus" recently? That removes the link from the toolbox in favour of a dropdown including it and contributions of that user as well. By the way, not likely I'll be able to reply further today as my body's not cooperating at all. sonia08:02, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out. I see it in the dropdown menu. I hope that you feel better soon. Pinetalk 08:06, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Email received. Able to function today, which is a start. sonia02:29, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Writing and Rhetoric II

Hi Sonia, we've had to push back the proposal assignment for my class. I'm now asking students to post article drafts to your talk page on the 23rd. Still game? By the way, Buggie111, the other online ambassador created a section on his talk page for students to post to. Could you do the same? Or would you prefer students to e-mail you? Thanks Matthewvetter (talk) 04:18, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Moved this section to the bottom of my page as per convention. I'm certainly still game, although I'm on a plane on the 23rd flying back from Canberra! I'll get a system up for students to post with later today, but they can always email me as well. sonia02:29, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool

Hey guys; apologies for the belated nature of this notification; as you can probably imagine, the whole blackout thing kinda messed with our timetables :P. Just a quick reminder that we've got an office hours session tomorrow at 19:00 in #wikimedia-office, where we'll be discussing the results of the hand-coding and previewing some new changes. Hope to see you there :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:43, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Rather disillusioned with the way things have been going at Wikipedia lately, I'm basically signing off from it for a while. I regret any tone I may have used to characterise your work and I hope this won't affect a future constructive editing collaboration when I return.

Hmm. A bit cynical about this-- it appears to be just "let's take all the existing processes, put them together into one thing, and task a few users who we've chosen from the top-down instead of using the usual wiki model to help the newbies in this newly unclear way". Will think about whether I can commit. sonia08:50, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Amazing Race

The new season begins tonight, and Saibo won't assist me this time around because I put File:Sodomie.jpg up for deletion on the Commons (this is quite literally the reason he gave me when I asked him five minutes ago). Would you please be of assistance as last season? The first line would be from Santa Barbara, California to Santa Bárbara (Salta).—Ryulong (竜龙) 21:49, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Sure. When do you need this first one by? (And posting on my talk page is good- doing it this way would be easier for me to keep track of than IRC as I computer-hop.) sonia00:03, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, episode 1 aired last night and someone was impatient and made a PNG version. I also asked a friend to try to make one, but when he tried to use the last season's SVG version it blew up on him because the file was corrupted or something. So just as long as it's before next week's episode on Sunday, which by when I'll be bugging either you or my friend to add Buenos Aires as the next stop.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:12, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
It blew up? Was he using illustrator or something? It doesn't like Inkscape SVGs. Will check though. I'm really busy for a bit, but will make time to do that Sunday my time. Shouldn't be Sunday yet for y'all. sonia19:19, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
He said when he saved the SVG, the colors got all switched around. So right now all we need is an SVG map showing a nice archy thing from Santa Barbara, California, to Santa Bárbara, Argentina, unless my friend can crank that out today. If he does make one, I'll give you the file link (even though I'll probably get a few premade maps out of him for the next two weeks of shows).—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:23, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
He got it fixed. He also added a little red dot inside the black dot, and I'm set for the next two weeks of programs.—Ryulong (竜龙) 01:40, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks to all of you who have commented on the New Page Triage talkpage. If you haven't had a chance yet, check it out; we're discussing some pretty interesting ideas, both from the Foundation and the community, and moving towards implementing quite a few of them :).

If you can make it, please do; we'll have a lot of stuff to show you and talk about, including (hopefully) a timetable of when we're planning to do what. Writing & Rhetoric II

Hi Sonia, I wanted to leave you a note to say thank you for your help with my class. The students really valued your input and I think the project went really well. I also want to ask you if you'd be willing to serve as online ambassador for a course I'm teaching beginning March 26. This would not involve commenting on drafts as in the last class as I want to try having online ambassadors only available for student questions/emails, rather than require students to submit a draft. In other words, it wouldn't be nearly as involved, but you would be available just in case students needed help. What do you think?

Sorry I'm so late in getting back to you. Thanks Sonia. You're on record as Online Ambassador, though this shouldn't be nearly as intensive as I won't be having them submit drafts to you. Thanks again. Matthewvetter (talk) 22:33, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, and no probs! sonia09:42, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

A bowl of strawberries for you!

New Page Triage newsletter

Hey all!

Thanks to everyone who attended our first office hours session; the logs can be found here, if you missed it, and we should be holding a second one on Thursday, 22 March 2012 at 18:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. I hope to see you all there :).

In the meantime, I have greatly expanded the details available at Wikipedia:New Page Triage: there's a lot more info about precisely what we're planning. If you have ideas, and they aren't listed there, bring them up and I'll pass them on to the developers for consideration in the second sprint. And if you know anyone who might be interested in contributing, send them there too!

Regards, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:18, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool newsletter

Sorry for the radio silence, guys :). I just wanted to let you know that we're planning on starting a new round of hand coding, which you can sign up for here. This will be the final round (honest!), and is basically because we found some really interesting results from the last round that blew our collective mind. It's important to check that they weren't a fluke, though, and so a bit more work is needed.

If you have any questions, drop a note on my talkpage - and if you know anyone who would be interested in participating, please tell them about it! We'll be holding an IRC training session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on the 21st of March to run through the tool and answer any questions you may have. Thanks! :) Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:39, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Ping

Please drop by IRC when you can. Thanks. Pine(talk) 06:17, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sonia, hope school is going well :)

I just finished a massive draft on our own very topical subject of paid editing on Wikipedia. I would love your thoughtful brain to check it for neutrality, formatting, organization, reference detail, etc. I hope you can take a quick look. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 12:24, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Wow. Massive indeed. Quick scan looks rather impressive! I'll do a proper nitpicky read at some point; might print it off to annotate on the bus home. (Yes, I'm old-fashioned..) sonia19:41, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Hah, I haven't seen paper now for years. Where do you still get yours? Looking forward to full-blown nitpickityness, of course, without expectation. Ocaasi t | c 20:39, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org or drop a note on my talkpage, and I'm happy to give you a quick walkthrough in a one-on-one session :).

All the best, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:31, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Templates and editor retention

I've been involved with the discussion on foundation-l about templates and editor retention. Since you have more extensive experience than I do with dealing with new editors, I think that you might want to check out the conversation and comment on foundation-l. Pine(talk) 07:53, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't follow foundation-l. Not sure I want that much stuff in my inbox either. Do you think I should? sonia09:42, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
If you're not highly motivated to read old posts, I wouldn't start now because most of the conversation has died off. Pine(talk) 21:24, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, not re that in particular, but is foundation-l worth subscribing to at all? sonia10:31, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Depends on your interests. Some of the conversation is like what happens at Village Pump. You can check the foundation-l archives to see what happens on the list. Pine(talk) 19:00, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

User script listing cleanup project

I'm leaving this message for known script authors, recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts, and those who've shown interest in user scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 04:54, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

#appropedia

We've got a few people online on #appropedia these days, including a new tech intern called JRWR. Your presence and wisdom would be most welcome! --Chriswaterguy talk 17:41, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not generally on IRC at all of late (my computer died and my pen drive with portable software was stolen), but I'll add it to my autojoin when I'm on. sonia22:34, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi :) its rappidz246,

Hey, i saw your comment on my post. I just wanted to know how you make your own wiki? And also this game is only being made by me and it is going to take 17 months to complete, but all the links are good, and not bad. So how do you make your own wiki? Like Skyrim wiki or Minecraft wiki or something like that? Seeing as its a game i would like one. Also, ive heard of a server thing known as Bukkit and they havent been around for to long, and they have already got a Wiki. But anyway, i was just hoping i could have some help, and how could i improve my post?

Thanks, Bradley Arnold (Rappidz246)

Rappidz246 (talk) 20:50, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. There are many places you can make a separate wiki, as in a separate website, like http://elderscrolls.wikia.com . I'd recommend Wikia, but I'm not hugely experienced with other wiki hosting sites—alternatively, if you're technically proficient and have your own server, setting up a wiki on your own server is something you can do. Wikia is easier and probably easier for other people to find though.
If by "wiki" you mean a Wikipedia article, it really does need more references: Wikipedia doesn't go by how new things are, but by how famous or important they are. That is, if something has made the news widely and received a lot of attention, it generally will have an article; if something has been written about in many books or academic journals, it likewise generally will have an article. If your game has either of these, then these can be used as sources for the article about it. If not, it probably should not have an article. Please see our notability guideline for more information, and this quick page for info about reliable sources.
Finally, a useful page for you may be our plain and simple guide to editing for editors who are linked to the articles they are writing about. Thanks for your enquiries, and feel free to ask me any more questions you may have! sonia22:34, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
