WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Deletion review?

Hej! It's tiring dealing with the levels of inanity regarding South Asian politics here... (although nothing compared to Eastern and Central Europe!) What're your thoughts on sending the P K Firos AfD to deletion review? Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 11:00, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Goldsztajn. I think this is a clear-cut case of drive-by delete votes without real reflection of the sources provided. Let me structure a quick draft, I'll post it to your talk page and we can take it to DR from there? --Soman (talk) 11:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

FYI ... Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/P.K. Firos. --Goldsztajn (talk) 22:18, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Goldsztajn, thanks for flagging. I began summarizing the SIGCOV/GNG summary at User:Soman/temp, but then I was offline for a long period. --Soman (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
That's an impressive list! What is the status of deletion review now that the article has been recreated? I'm sure there's precedent, just not aware of it... Regards, --Goldsztajn (talk) 20:26, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi Goldsztajn, I posted in the 2nd AfD now. Perhaps let the second AfD run its course before opening DR? --Soman (talk) 13:06, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
Soman, Apologies, I did not get a chance to weigh in... I still think it's worth taking to deletion review...your thoughts? Goldsztajn (talk) 23:35, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Goldsztajn. I agree. I think it's a clearcut case of mechanical reading of guidelines vs. common sense (plus a bit of systemic bias, if this was a UK or US politician with same degree of coverage, it would have almost certainly resulted in keep). My time availability these days are a bit limited and difficult to predict, but I think it would make sense to go for a DR at this stage. --Soman (talk) 17:16, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
FYI ... the editor who took both the P K Firos articles to AfD has been indef banned for sockpuppetry ... I'm thinking better to take to DR on that basis and request a relisting, rather than attempting to engage on improper closure. Thoughts? In solidarity, --Goldsztajn (talk) 09:44, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Goldsztajn. Ok, well noted. Let's move ahead on the DR. I can start a draft article, to avoid re-creating the low quality articles. PK Firos wasn't elected in the end (which would have given an automatic pass for WP:NPOL), but the margin was very narrow. --Soman (talk) 10:16, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Going to try it this way first, might be simpler than DR: User_talk:Daniel#Relist_request_of_P_K_Firos --Goldsztajn (talk) 10:44, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Seems it wasn't. --Goldsztajn (talk) 16:46, 5 May 2021 (UTC)

Monrovia

Sorry to get to you so late on this; I see you left a response to many of my questions on the Monrovia page. That's a lot of nice information you provided. However, I'm still unsure of a few things and would just like to have a few things clarified.

1. So the "zones" Monrovia is divided into are purely for statistical purposes (census divisions) and have no administrative basis?

2. I've had this map showing 15 zones for awhile, but I think I said there are 16 in the article. Are there 15 or 16?

3. What I know for sure is that local government wise, the district is divided into 12 municipalities (2 cities, 9 townships, 1 borough). Are the 15 or 16 zones contained entirely within the municipalities? Like, can they cross municipal boundaries or not? I'd really like to see a map showing the boundaries of the zones compared against the boundaries of the municipalities. All the maps we've seen show electoral boundaries and the lower-level statistical "community" boundaries with the zone boundaries, but never simply the zone and municipal boundaries together.

Thanks! --Criticalthinker (talk) 22:56, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi Criticalthinker! Many thanks. So clearly the issue of local government in Liberia is very vague, with limited authority. But yes, my understanding is that the zones are only used for statistical purposes. Here [1] there are Z100, Z200, etc until Z1600 but there is no Z1500. From what I can see the 15 zones are covered within the 12 municipalities. The 16th zone would have been Johnsonville I think, which seems to have been included in Monrovia at some point and then removed? --Soman (talk) 00:19, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
Okay, so which zones compromise which cities/townships/borough? This would be a noteworthy fact to add to the article.--Criticalthinker (talk) 02:06, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
New Kru Town (Borough) = Z100
Garworlohn (Township), seemingly this is spelt differently in every source = Z200, Z300
West Point (Township) = Z400
Monrovia City Corporation = Z500, Z600, Z700, Z800
Congo Town (Township) = Z900, Z1000
Johnsonville (Township) = so this is really were it gets messy for me. Per [2] Rock Hill and City View (both Z1100) are in Johnsonville Township. But per [3] Rock Hill and City View are in Greater Monrovia District but Johnsonville Township is in the Commonwealth District.
Paynesville City Corporation = Z1100. It might be that Rock Hill and City View are in Paynesville as well.
Gardnesville (Township) = Z1200
New Georgia (Township) = Z1300
Bardnesville (Township) = Z1400
Caldwell (Township) = part of Z1600
Dixville (Township) = part of Z1600
--Soman (talk) 10:32, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
To confuse things further - there are a number of refs on 'Rock Hill Community' in Paynesville (such as https://www.liberianobserver.com/news/peace-remains-our-hero/ ), but this seems to refer to the "Z1100 GSA Road Rockville" in the LISGIS document. --Soman (talk) 11:11, 19 May 2021 (UTC)
Some of this has to do with when each of our sources was produced. But one thing that stays constant across our maps and the Census is that Johnsonville Township is not in Greater Monrovia District. There are two small communities with Johnsville in their name in Bardnesville Township. But the actual Johnsonville Township is always shown outside Greater Monrovia. Here is the most recent electoral district map (2020). As for City View and Rock Hill, there does appear to be confusion as to which municipality they are in. Both the 2011 and 2020 election maps show the communities in Johnsonville in Commonwealth District, but my 2014 map shows them within Paynesville's zone. I guess it's possible that perhaps the zone and municipal boundaries actually don't match up easily? And that is to say that perhaps Johnsonville Township actually DOES cross district and zone lines? Like, maybe Rock Hill and City View are in Johnsville Township AND Paynesville Zone (but not Paynesville City Corporation)? --Criticalthinker (talk) 10:12, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Well, to confuse things further: There are communities with 'Bardnesville' in their name in the Gardnesville Township... as it is the road leading to Bardnesville. There are also mentions of a 'Lower Johnsonville Township', possible that 'Lower Johnsonville' and 'Johnsonville' townships are separate? --Soman (talk) 12:09, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Anyway, if you find some other maps showing the District boundaries, let me know. --Criticalthinker (talk) 11:12, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
