References & help

[edit]

Hi I noticed you edited on Vauxhall a Census. I do not know how to add a reference or change an external link to a reference. I would appreciate if you could help Dmcm2008 (talk) 16:09, 15 February 2008 (UTC) Re references, thanks for your help. I am learning as I go along but not all of it is working the way I want it to. Like adding a Google map ref. Anyway I am finding Wikipedia a very interesting hobby! Dmcm2008 (talk) 20:17, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Snowy I have another query I am unable to fathom how to do a certain edit; example people from Liverpool to add someone in letter 'm'. I have an actual person in mind Johnny Morrissey, a footballer, but even though I have set up his page I do not know how to include him in other categories. editing response

[edit]

Hi again, I am sure you do not need this, however can you help I am having negative action to my edits from Kitchen knife. There is a poor attitude from this character and i wish to make my own odd edits to things, Maghull is what i was working on. Please let me know your thoughts. Dmcm2008 (talk) 21:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Snowy, I am finding the other editors out there difficult to handle ! I am the one being classed as rude yet some, like Jza84, are being pathetic in their approach. However, if you are able to help my current dispute i would be grateful. Dmcm2008 (talk) 23:06, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wirral

[edit]

Hi there. I guess you have a point. Go ahead and revert if you think so; perhaps we could do with someone drawing a map of the peninsula alone. Sadly, that won't be me :) DWaterson (talk) 21:00, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

vandalism

[edit]

Hi hope you are aware I am trying to do work on wikipedia in good faith. I am having trouble with a user rubbishing my edits. If you have any connections with my area, Liverpool, this user is rubbishing my knowledge of local suburbs (beyond arbitry council boundaries). I am not sure how to deal with this user as he is insulting my intelligence in asking me to justify it with references. It is like asking every item of info on any page to be referenced, because if you look hard enough you will find fault with one thing or another. This user clearly does, and has not been reasonable with me. I do not know if the user is a vandal but I am unable to contain his vandalism on my work. Can you help? Dmcm2008 (talk) 09:41, 13 March 2008 (UTC) I read your text to me, and I understand some of the points you were making. I know edits should be verifiable, it is on the bottome of the edit page. However i am at a loss as to why these users are making such a fuss about my editing link 'suburb of Liverpool'. Contrary to some of the diatribe I have had to put up with in the last day or two, places can be in another borough and still part of ie Liverpool. It does not appeal to them is it because they are jobsworths, or not local? Whichever, they are giving me a rough ride. I imagine thousands and thousands of articles have unverifiable sources. Atleast my editing is done truthfully and in good faith. Hope you continue to edit fairly! Dmcm2008 (talk) 16:15, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Harrassment

[edit]

Hi snowy, you might feel I am harrassing you(!) i hope you dont. I am winding up my editing on Wikipedia due to harrassment by Jza84 as if you check the users editing history he has tried to airbrush my editing on quite a number of my edits mainly focused on Liverpool suburbs and it was him who blocked me for 24 hours.. I have tried to reason with him but I have been given a load of diatribe. It aint worth bothering with. He is from Manchester I do not know why he must systematically redo any edits I have made to do with Liverpool. I thank you for your praise on Vauxhall lets hope he does not destroy anymore of my work. Best wishes. Dmcm2008 (talk) 09:31, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Formby - sleepy? dormitory?

[edit]

Hi Snowy. I completely agree about providing evidence relating to Formby's description as a sleepy town or as a dormitory town for Liverpool and Manchester, and I provided a link to the Formby Times article in order to show how councillors that object to post 5pm uses, and possible developments that may shatter the sleepy appearance, fail to see the effects of their actions.

I remember geography lessons at primary and secondary schools where Formby and Hightown were both described as sleepy and/or quiet dormitory towns - no wonder that Hightown is often referred to as Toy Town - and a quick google search of 'formby dormitory' leads to any number of 1st and 3rd person accounts or descriptions of our coastal town in such a way.

Councillors and Parish Councillors - who were voted in on a miniscule number of votes showing the apathy the residents had for such a localised form of governance - fail to see that for a large number of residents 'sleepy' is exactly what they want from the town. its somewhere where you can feel comfortable letting your kids play out in the park or going down to the beach, while the small traffic flow outside of school times means it is a nice place to walk or cycle. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.188.50.200 (talk) 15:16, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wirral

[edit]

No need to apologise. As far as I recall all your edits have been constructive and valuable. We are only talking about changing one word to keep it simple. JMcC (talk) 20:40, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I notice you’ve tidied up this page a bit; nice!
I see you deleted a book, saying it was spam; do you know that? I don't know the book, but the reference looked OK to me.
Also, you’d deleted the date of the 'Three Graces' appellation; was that accidental or deliberate? Anyway, I’ve put it back; it was here, and on the Wil Alsop page, and it chimes with what I remember.
I was wondering what to do about sources; I got my stuff from the Pevsners guide, but was thinking of separating the references into a 'Notes' and 'Refs' section. Are you Ok with that?

Mersey Ferry

[edit]

Thanks for the comment - I'll try to get some more references though, as it's very much based on one source. I'll also put in some cross-refs to Gerry & the Pacemakers, Liver Birds, and other cultural icons. As for the missing photo - oops! Entirely my mistake, I've reinstated it now. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:04, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to edit as much as you like - and referencing is not my strong point! Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:21, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Judith Ann Hawkins

[edit]

Hi I have to ask for your help albeit not too difficult for you I hope.. I am setting up a page for Judith Ann, Halle Berry's mother, who is from Liverpool; on Halle Berry's page it is 'Judith Ann (nee Hawkins) so I am leaving the nee Hawkins in that text but have linked like this Judith Ann Hawkins|Judith Ann unfortunately for people from Liverpool it is placing her under 'j'. It needs to be under H any way to get round this? cheers Dmcm2008 (talk) 10:16, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dmcm2008, glad you're still editing here. To list anyone surname first in categories (such as: [Category:People from Liverpool]) - add the following formatting to the bottom of the page (just above all the categories that are listed on that page):

{{DEFAULTSORT:Hawkins, Judith Ann}}

Hope this helps. Cheers. Snowy 1973 (talk) 14:01, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

hi thanks for the reply, sadly once again I have met with the non cordial element of WP my page has been deleted. I will try again soon. Dmcm2008 (talk) 17:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disused Stations & Seacombe Branch on Wirral Railway

[edit]

The reason I put terminates in is that disused part terminates there after that it's still in use. I assume that before closer it was fully connected. I think you may be right to include the LMS bit. I think the Wirral Railway article needs to be expanded to name the various branches then the link can be to Wirral Railway#Seacombe Branch. --Kitchen Knife (talk) 14:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the map on Disused railways, you could have got to New Brighton from this branch, You would only be able t go to Bidston or Birkenhead not to Wallasey.--Kitchen Knife (talk) 15:01, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry your right. I assume they must have reversed the train at Bidston or before. It is a question of wether we are doumenting the routes or the rails. I've tended to go for the rails and ignore possible reversings as it becomes very complicated.--Kitchen Knife (talk) 15:27, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Merseyside

[edit]

Hi there, I hope this isn't considered spam, but I noticed on the UK Geography project page that you have an interest in Liverpool related pages, so I wanted to ask if you would be interesting in supporting a Merseyside Wikiproject? I'm trying to gauge if there is suitable support before making a formal proposal. Cheers. Zenichiro (talk) 15:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Liverpool Urban Area 'greater Liverpool

[edit]

I am not sure how this works, but I am seeking additional opinions on the discussion on this page, I will abide by the general consensus. User JZA continues to undermine my edits and has done over a period. However I am only looking at opinions on the discussion page on Liverpool Urban Area if you are interested please leave your thoughts. Thank you. Dmcm2008 (talk) 10:14, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Chester and Birkenhead Railway (Wirral Way)

[edit]

Fine by me. I didn't think the answers I gave were definitive. From the encyclopidic point of view we do need some reference to the changes as the shear rate of change during the railway boom is difficult to imagine.--Kitchen Knife (talk) 15:42, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citations

[edit]

Not sure if you're still watching my talk page but I thought I would answer in more detail here - I was quite tired last night. I first came across the Harvard idea when working on the Bridgewater Canal article (which has just achieved GA status) and it took me some time to realise why others were using it. Look at the article (much better than the example I gave last night); it's helpful for long and complex articles because it will take you via the ref to the actual book. It looks like the system for the future (and the present).

Similarly the cover-all citation template seems a good idea - just one template in which you can use any relevant field. The accessdate field also coverts dates in the format 2008-12-06 into 6 December 2008, if you prefer to do it that way. Pleased to see you have gone back to using it in the Daresbury article. Best wishes. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 10:58, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
