Disambiguation link notification for March 16
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Exception handling, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Destructor. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Standard Notification
Please carefully read this information:
The Arbitration Committee has authorised discretionary sanctions to be used for pages regarding all edits about, and all pages related to, (a) GamerGate, (b) any gender-related dispute or controversy, (c) people associated with (a) or (b), all broadly construed, a topic which you have edited. The Committee's decision is here.
Discretionary sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimize disruption to controversial topics. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to the topic that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behavior, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. This message is to notify you sanctions are authorised for the topic you are editing. Before continuing to edit this topic, please familiarise yourself with the discretionary sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.--Jorm (talk) 15:33, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
It's your turn to get the discretionary sanctions notice about Gamergate! It's not a big deal; everyone gets this. Please read the sanctions and tread carefully; that page has dragons.--Jorm (talk) 15:33, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. For future reference, if someone makes a change like this which has already been discussed to death in the talk page archives, I think it would be helpful for you to point that fact out (assuming you're aware of it), rather than encouraging them to start up a new discussion without having read the history. – Smyth\talk 16:10, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Hey thanks for your copyedit. I've moved the ADL reference to the sentence it verifies. Just thought it's clearer that way, but please feel free to revert. --84.44.156.8 (talk) 13:43, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Journalistic hyperbole
Hi, I've noticed you saying on the RS noticeboard: "Journalistic hyperbole is not worth mentioning, no matter where it appeared". I'm finding an issue with journalistic hyperbole myself - journalists' tendency to talk of things being a 'record' (since a date carefully chosen to avoid admitting it isn't really a record). Any suggestions of wp policies/essays etc that can back up my concern that articles, and particularly the leads to articles, avoid journalistic hyperbole? Thanks DrArsenal (talk) 13:17, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- That's a good question. The most relevant policy I know of is WP:NEWSORG, which reminds us that even "reliable" news sources often contain a mixture of opinion and (alleged) fact. Policy states that matters of opinion must be attributed to the writer and not stated in Wikipedia's voice. And while it's probably not directly supported by policy, my view is that such opinions shouldn't generally be included in Wikipedia at all unless the writer is a notable person in that context.
- For a cautionary tale of how even alleged factual content in reliable sources is often not true, I also encourage everyone to read Wikipedia:Otto Middleton. – Smyth\talk 15:29, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, Smyth. Is there a need for an essay/something warning that journalists' need to sell their work tends to result in sensationalizing? What do you think? DrArsenal (talk) 20:26, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
- I think Otto Middleton is that essay. – Smyth\talk 20:32, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
I did read Otto, but what I was thinking of was occasions when what they say is true, but less significant than they make out. DrArsenal (talk) 22:37, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
- Can you give an example? – Smyth\talk 22:55, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
Things like "The first time since 2002 that...", when a more reasonable description might be "The third time in C21 that...", or "the hottest day so far this year", or "the windiest day in /somewhere obscure/ since records began" (when if you delve further, records only began 20 years ago, whereas most other places they go back longer, and the record wasn't broken in those places) etc. DrArsenal (talk) 23:11, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
- Then I guess you're looking for something like Wikipedia:Verifiability#Verifiability_does_not_guarantee_inclusion. – Smyth\talk 23:24, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
