Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Smobes! Your additions to Dean Phillips have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, it's important to understand and adhere to guidelines about using information from sources to prevent copyright and plagiarism issues. Here are the key points:
- Limited quotation: You may only copy or translate a small portion of a source. Any direct quotations must be enclosed in double quotation marks (") and properly cited using an inline citation. More information is available on the non-free content page. To learn how to cite a source, see Help:Referencing for beginners.
- Paraphrasing: Beyond limited quotations, you are required to put all information in your own words. Following the source's wording too closely can lead to copyright issues and is not permitted; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when paraphrasing, you must still cite your sources as appropriate.
- Image use guidelines: In most scenarios, only freely licensed or public domain images may be used and these should be uploaded to our sister project, Wikimedia Commons. In some scenarios, non-freely copyrighted content can be used if they meet all ten of our non-free content criteria; Wikipedia:Plain and simple non-free content guide may help with determining a file's elegibility.
- Copyrighted material donation: If you hold the copyright to the content you want to copy, or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license the text for publication here. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Copying and translation within Wikipedia: Wikipedia articles can be copied or translated, however they must have proper attribution in accordance with Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. For translation, see Help:Translation § License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Persistent failure to comply may result in being blocked from editing. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:55, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm Galebazz. I noticed that you recently removed content from Dean Phillips 2024 presidential campaign without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Galebazz (talk) 14:13, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- I removed the content because a Wikipedia administrator told me it was copyrighted and I wanted to be in compliance with the rules. Smobes (talk) 14:20, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, looks like the text is kind of promotional and not neutral enough now that I look into it, but I think some parts of it could be salvaged instead of deleting it entirely. That does require more work though. No harm done with this edit then, I would recommend using the edit summary feature in the future to avoid confusion. Galebazz (talk) 14:28, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- I reverted my edit to remove content. I agree with you that some parts could be salvaged instead of deleting it all entirely. I welcome anyone that would like to put in the work to add to this section more neutral original text related to the content that was removed. Smobes (talk) 14:58, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- I just added more content to the political positions section to encompass the main points that were previously covered before being removed. Please let me know if you think it is neutral enough now or if it needs more work. Thanks! Smobes (talk) 16:27, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's copyrighted text from where? You should provide an URL, book name or other information about the work from which the text came from. ObserveOwl (chit-chat • my doings) 14:58, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

- It appears that the Dean Phillips for President: Official Campaign Website was taken down... Which is where the content came from. Smobes (talk) 15:16, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Here is a snapshot at the WayBack Machine. I am failing to find text on this page that corresponds with the content you removed, do you mean a subpage of that main page? ObserveOwl (chit-chat • my doings) 15:19, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yes the subpage named platform of the main page corresponds with the content I removed. I intend to change the wording making the content more neutral and reupload it. Smobes (talk) 15:31, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, which subpage? ObserveOwl (chit-chat • my doings) 15:37, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- The policy priorities under platform that correspond to the topics covered in the content. It appears that the WayBack Machine snapchshot shared does not open the drop down menu up to reveal the full text for each policy priority listed. Smobes (talk) 15:41, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

- By the way, sorry if I'm pestering, I'm just seeing if I can request deletion of previous versions of the article that had the alleged copyright violations. ObserveOwl (chit-chat • my doings) 15:24, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- I had my post removed by another user on the Dean Phillips wiki page under the section titled tenure about legislation he supported and helped get passed into law during his tenure in Congress where I had used some of the same content that I removed on this page. [edit]Hi, I'm David O. Johnson.
I've noticed in your recent edits (such as the most recent edit to the 2024 Democratic National Convention article) that you sometimes leave the date in the "first1" parameter. Please be sure to place it as part of a separate "date" parameter.
In addition, please be sure that your date formatting is consistent. Sometimes your edits have both dmy and mdy style dates. The date format should follow whatever style the article is using, but it should not be both.
Thanks, David O. Johnson (talk) 21:08, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, David. I will make sure to do that in the future. Smobes (talk) 21:41, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics
[edit]You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution
[edit] Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved content from Black Lives Matter into 2024 Democratic Party presidential primaries. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content (here or elsewhere), Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution
. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 14:06, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you this is very helpful to know. Smobes (talk) 16:36, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
