Template:Arsenal F.C. Squad

Hey Slumgum - having taken a look at the template (and the many others that have popped up mimicking it) I have to say I don't like the "|" vertical bar characters - they're fine for when you have a few links that need separating but when there are 40+ players the bars clutter the space up a good deal, and the broken vertical line effect they give if you run your eye down the middle of the box isn't very pleasing to the eye, IMHO.

I much prefer the neater regularity in the alternative column-based design you made [1] - it doesn't need the vertical bars, and is much clearer as a result. Would you mind if I changed the design of that (and the England squad template) to the column-based one? Qwghlm 11:49, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Template:Country Squad 2006 World Cup

Hi there! A user creted the {{Argentina Squad 2006 World Cup}} form your original and I thought about making it wider so it would take less space, since there's empty space on both sides of the template. I cheked and something between 50 and 60 would be just great. I thought about changing the Argentine template only, but it would be niced if they all had the same width. Edit feature on football articles

Yeah, perhaps you're right. I noticed that our Japanese compatriots had emulated our templates and had an edit feature, so I used that on our templates. Thinking about it I guess the Japanese wiki probably has less vandals, and when the world cup starts there will probably be a very large number of anonymous contributors editing these articles, so we should probably remove the easy way to vandalise. Your note made me smile and, I confess, puzzle over the etymology of the word. I must confess to finding words a lot of fun in that our language is ever evolving which both helps and hinders communication. Hopefully the former rather than the latter. You are right, however, my normal instinctive spelling would have been for the double "l" rather than the treble "l" but I have no problem with N. American spellings; indeed, they make the language richer. Squad templates

Hi Slumgum and congratulations on the squad template idea, it seems to be really popular. I'm sure you've noticed the disagreement I'm having with SenorKristobbal regarding the EFC template as you've been trying to add fixes based on the outcomes of reverts. I'm hoping that I can convince you that the current implementation is non-standard and an effort should be made to bring the squad templates into a more cohesive group.

I have to say, the whole squad template thing feels strange... It's a nominally standard layout that's being implemented as a template n times for n squads. How well does Wikipedia handle nested templates at the moment? I think it would be a great candidate for an over-arching template that could then have the squad details injected in an intermediate template which could be included on a page.

Anyway, work has been going on with the fb start/end infobox consolidation system. It's being used on somewhere between 1000 and 1500 pages on the English Wikipedia. The benefit this brings is one of consistency to all infoboxes that are used at the bottom of football related articles. I converted the EFC template to follow this approach and then modified all of the pages that included it. I think it works quite well. Do you have any strong objection to the infoboxes being brought to heel under the fb start/end system? ⁂veila# 11:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

The | symbol is called a Vertical bar or pipe. There should be one on your keyboard somewhere. Mine is to the left of z, requiring the shift button. Otherwise there should be one in the 'insert character box' that appears when you edit a page. It's between the ~ and ° symbols. Hope that's help.

North and South

I noticed that you added a comment about the division of the league cup into north and south sections some of the clubs in the northern section are actually located further south than some of the southern section clubs. Do you know if that's true for the forthcoming competition? I seem to remember last time Hereford were in the LDV cup they were in the northern section, despite being some 60 miles south of Shrewsbury, who were in the southern section.

Yes, it is true for this season's League Cup. Notts County are in the southern section, despite being located further north than both Derby County and Nottingham Forest (just), who are both in the northern section[5]. - Green Tentacle 17:36, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree that they can look better but they are now all in the original club template format to avoid controversy, and make them all look standardised. Club crests aren't allowed, for copyright/fair use reasons, although I would very much like to use them. Slumgum, just on the Italian Squad templates. I know for a fact that the Italian ones represent only players loaned in and have never contained players who are at present loaned out as they are simply not part of the squad. Including loaned out players (while owned by the club) would be wrong as they are not technically registered at the club). As it stands, none of the Italian club templates contain loaned-out players. Overlinking

I think you incorrectly reverted my revert on the Scott Carson page. His infobox was overlinked and it shouldn't be that way. I had this argument a few months ago with an admin who basically told me "I don't care if you think it looks messy, but wikipedia policy says that it shouldn't be overlinked". Yes, I take that to mean that the article and the infobox are both allowed an instance of the same link within the same page, not that an infobox should be allowed infinite instances of the same link. Template long and short names

If we were making a squad box for a club with a long name, e.g. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo or Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense we would surely prefer to use Flamengo or Gremio rather than their full name.

Template:National squad does this using (I'm pretty sure) {{{title|{{{country}}} squad}}}. Title is the displayed title, country is the default value. (The link goes to the article Country national football team)

Therefore I think it would be possible to add similar code to the FS2 template without ruining the ones already in place.

Just noticed the infobox you added to Jimmy Greaves, and I thought I'd point out that a different infobox exists for retired players Template:Football player infobox shows a list of the others too. 2006 World Cup Squad templates

I noticed you removed {{England Squad 2006 World Cup}} from Cole's page three times. You may not have known that older World Cup templates were listed at WP:TfD on June 30 (by me) and no consensus to delete them was reached. This means that if an England 2002 World Cup Squad box existed, it would also appear on Cole's page. Previous World Cup Templates

I see you have questioned a few of these previous world cup templates which have been popping up. I have to agree that they are a little bulky (just look at the Paolo Maldini article.

Anyways, I think i've come up with some sort of solution which will suit all.

I've created a basic template above which features a hide button on the side. So, if your in an article, it only needs to be opened when the users wants it. My programming ins't the best. I can't add flags at the side or increase the size of the print. I also can't change the colour of "Hide" or keep the colour in the box white when I link the text to another article.

Do you want to have a go at improving it enough to be used in articles ?

If you want to contribute please post your replies at the discussion section at Template:World Cup Squads as there could be a number of people contributing to this.

Ukraine national football team

Hi again!

Do you mind assisting me with what to do with regards to the Ukraine national football team page? I've already filed several warnings about the user, (see [6]), but I also think there needs to be a separate resolution for the football team page. The user does not appear to respond to reason, so I think we need some other solution to the page, since this will become a flat out edit war, especially if the admins don't respond appropriately. Hi, last week I wrote an article about Shrewsbury Town on the danish wikipedia, for this article I putt in the Shrewsbury logo (Floreat Salopia) - I should never have done that.... because I got obviosly no permission for that. I don't know the legal standing for the Danish Wikipedia, but all the permission needed to hold the STFC logo on the (US-based) English language Wikipedia servers is seen on the image's page: Image:STFC 21.GIF. It's fair use for en.wikipedia to use sports logos on their own article's page. subst: nft and fc

From what I understand, it does reduce the server load. For some templates, it is not a big issue; but, those both use a lookup of sorts which adds to the complexity. Template talk:fc explicity says that it should be used that way (with subst:), and I have taken the liberty to do the same thing to the nft template.

As for the amount of typing, all I do is add subst: between {{ and nft. Wikipedia's substitute mechanism takes care of the rest (I would get really bored typing " national football team" over and over...) My fingers are generally lazy too; but the difference between {{nft|England}} and {{subst:nft|England}} is not so bad. See WP:SUBST for more info about substitution. I was about to thank you for reverting it, as I'd just checked up on him on the official site, to see him wearing the new shirt[7]. I've spent some time over the summer cleaning up messy articles for released/transferred players, so I did the same for Garry after Tiago Heitor's edit. I looked at the Arsenal squad list (he wasn't there) and soccerbase (no current club info) before I was convinced that he had left. Obviously he hasn't. You reverted his changes to the Jay Denny page, which I saw when looking through his contributions after catching him falsely adding players to two of our American teams, New England and Chicago. On his talk page, it seems he's been called out for making fictional changes to the roster of Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine. He's got a number of other contributions to the rosters of other clubs, but I don't have enough info to know whether they're made-up or not. Another Gilberto Question

Hi Slumgum. I have another Gilberto Silva question for you; except this time it isn't about stats. It's about the times in the article where I cite "fans" then go on to make a negative/positive statement about Gilberto, for example "some fans criticised him for being inconsistent", "This led some pundits and fans to conclude that Gilberto's absence was the reason for Arsenal's struggle" and "His lack of composure on the ball attracts a lot of criticism and frustration from fans" etc...

While these statements might appear to be POV, I've tried to write them in a NPOV light, also citing the flipside ('critics') of the argument. Plus, all the critic/fans statements I've used are true, none of it is made up (not that this matters without a reference). The problem is that there is no way to cite a group of football fans - and the Arsenal fans opinions are important to Gilberto's career and thus important to his wikipedia article. I only know opinions of gilberto through conversations/chants/jeers in the stadium... and you can't really cite that.

My question is: shall I strip out all reference to 'fans'/'critics', or just leave it uncited? Or - is there a way to cite large bodies of football fans? (ie blogs/forums etc?) Thanks for your help in this rather tricky topic. -GilbertoSilvaFan 13:46, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I looked closely at the Gilberto article, and tried to find faults (I knew you'd appreciate it). I just made a few minor changes to things I noticed needed tweaking.

It's very good of you to take the time to read through it! Thanks.

I think it's worthy of being a featured article already, but I did manage to think of a few things that you could add to the article:

• Early career: ...the improved situation back at home - did his mother get better?

I'm not sure what "improved situation back home" means. I must have made it up. When writing it, I must have thought 'oh well if he started playing football, the condition at home must have improved'. I can get very speculative at times. I'll remove the sentence. Good spot.

*The way Who Moved My Cheese? affected his philosophy on how he plays football. I don't know if he still follows the philosophy, but it shows he is a thinker as much as a worker.

This is a very interesting point. I really wanted to include something about his like of 'who moved my cheese', but I really couldn't think of a place to put it. The question I still have though, is: does the message from the book really affect the way he plays football? The message I got from the book was "get up and make things happen - don't be afraid of change to make life better". Which part of his life or career would you say this philosophy applies to? Also, how would you recommend including it without making it POV/speculative? It's a very interesting point, I think I just need a bit of help with how to include it in the article properly. Good idea.

*Gilberto Silva on his shirt for Brazil but just Gilberto at Arsenal, due to the other Gilberto. I don't this is really important, but if you want to add it you could.

I agree, this is quite a 'complex' issue - especially since some players are/aren't allowed to have their nicknames on their shirts. I might add a new section called 'Shirt naming' and have a little time line with the names which Gilberto has had on his shirt over the years. (Do you think that's a good idea - or should I include the information in the biography? I'm not sure how biographical it is.) I think during the 2002 world cup it was 'Silva', which carried over to when he first joined Arsenal. After that, he asked for it to be changed to 'Gilberto', then for the 2006 world cup it was 'G. Silva'. I'll need to do a bit of work to check those facts first. One question - would you say that citations would be needed for a section like that? If so, what kind of citations would be sufficient? Links to photo galleries displaying the lettering on his shirt? Written references to his shirt? I'm not even sure if it would need any of that though, so let me know.

*Boot sponsorship deals. (Although you'd need citations to avoid it appearing like a product endorsement). I would consider this least important.

Again, a good idea. It will take a lot of time to come up with this information, but I'll give it a go. (I'm interviewing Gilberto on Monday so I might even ask him then - but shhh, don't tell anyone.) Would you suggest a new section for this, or putting the info in an existing section?

Hmm. The example you offered is a little unbalanced (the positions followed by the names), in my opinion.

I don't mind others changing the template. If you look at its history, the only other person that has was an anonymous editor who added the manager, who isn't part of the squad (well, since it's Coyle in this case he actually is, but I hope you get my point). If the majority of the squad templates change to look like the one you offered, then I'd be more inclined to changed the Saints one. Seaman

According to the most reliable breakdown of results at Gunnermania, Seaman's 563 matches included 11 European matches in the 1994-95 season. As Arsenal played 9 matches in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup 1994-95 the other two must be the European Super Cup matches they played that season as well. So the 2 'spares' are definitely not those. My guess is Makita Trophy matches but that was more a friendly tournament, and appearances there are generally not counted. Qwghlm 09:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Slumgum. I just wanted to pop by to say thank you very much for all your help with the Gilberto Silva article. It's now featured, and it's got a lot to do with you, and in particular your suggestions! I'll try and do a few of the sections you mentioned in your last 'suggestions' post, I think it would really add depth to the article. Anyway; I don't know how you manage to spend so much time looking over other peoples articles... but it's great that you do - you're a great example to new Wikipedians such as myself. Also, thanks for your help with statistics during the article's early days. I'm going to nominate the article for a front page slot, then add a spoken version of the article, then go on my merry way.
