The Dick Raymond bio

Thanks for the improvements you made to the Dick Raymond page.

I question the appropriateness of one added category, though it's possible you came across some specific info I'd missed.

The category is United States Navy pilots of World War II. My information, from the research I did, indicated Dick Raymond served in the Navy Air Corps during the War. I don't remember coming across a reference that stated he'd been a pilot. So while I can imagine he might have been a pilot, other possibilities include: an aircraft mechanic, an ordnanceman, a flagger (or some other role).

Please advise me on how you determined Raymond served as a pilot in WWII. If the detail remains unclear, I'd want to remove that specific category.

Thanks so much for the tips, Slowking Man. Very useful tips. About photos: everything I ever heard about Raymond was how modest he was. He did a lot, helped a lot, contributed much, but was generally shy about personal publicity. (More than one person referred to him as "a saint".) SwiftKey clipboards

This is definitely getting off-topic for the Help Desk, but here's something which would be a huge help if you know of an answer. On Android I use SwiftKey as my keyboard, and have a huge number of saved clips with shortcuts for things like IPA characters, Wikipedia templates, mathematical symbols . . . (eg åå gives me ɔ and comm gives me ). Probably around 60 or 80 of them. However, SwiftKey doesn't provide a means to back these up and I'm reluctant to simply trust Google to recreate them when I get a new phone. Do you know of any way to do this manually? (Ideally less manual than pasting them somewhere and copying them all in by hand!) Musiconeologist (talk) 18:35, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Musiconeologist: Yep it never hurts to make multiple backups. Probably the most convenient way: connect the Android device to a "PC" with a USB cable. Assuming Windows, it will then show up in File Explorer and you can browse the storage contents (a message likely will pop up on the Android device to confirm access first, so hit allow). App settings should be under the /data folder; the folders under that have the long full "app namespace names" like com.whatever.mycoolapp; Swiftkey's should say "swiftkey" likely at the end. Go ahead and copy that to the PC. You could just copy the whole /data kit and kaboodle but that will likely take some time to complete.

Now if you wind up needing to restore from that, it gets unfortunately a bit more complicated and you need to use Android Debug Bridge (adb). This is because of Android's recent security enhancements which turn on "scoped storage" and prevent non-"system" apps from getting at settings other than their own. This is actually a good thing overall as it makes things much more secure by limiting the potential Bad Stuff malware can get up to. Security measures always involve some tradeoff with convenience. A password of "mypass" is not gonna keep anyone out except the most well-behaved and polite actors. In a perfect world...

A well-behaved "app" will be hooked in to the proper Android stuff so its settings get automatically backed up and transferred around by Android automatically. Many also allow you to "export" their settings on-demand. Again unfortunately not everyone who creates an app does things the way they're "supposed to". (As I mentioned no problem asking yours truly for advice; if you want to get more eyes on a question this sort of question is welcomed at the Computing ref desk). --Slowking Man (talk) 19:25, 28 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to either: put a statement of this on your employer's official website; or, send an e-mail from an official e-mail account to the address given on that page I linked. Follow the directions on that page step-by-step and you should succeed.
