SS Vestris

[edit]

You might find {{infobox ship}} useful for this article. Mjroots (talk) 20:22, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Mjroots. I've added the infobox for ships to SS Vestris Sladew (talk) 09:44, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I've nominated SS Vestris, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. Mjroots (talk) 06:12, 31 October 2010 (UTC) Mjroots (talk) 06:12, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks Mjroots, that's kinda cool. I feel unaccountable proud of my first article now :) Sladew (talk) 06:25, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, the article can still be improved. See WP:MOSSHIP - all ship names in italics is one that needs attention. More categories need to be added, the flag in the infobox needs changing to the civil flag, etc, etc. I'd pitch in, but I've just found another ship that foundered on her maiden voyage (RMS Titanic is the best known, but there are others), so I'm going to create that article now. Mjroots (talk) 06:57, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've italicised names, added categories, flags etc. You also inspired me to write up more of the ships history than just the sinking. So, I've added a history section. I'm a bit worn out now, so I think I'll take a rest and work on my Mere (weapon) article :) Sladew (talk) 09:03, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Helpful?

[edit]

I came to review the hook on DYK which looks fine as it even underestimates the casualities (good idea as it avoids discussion). However while checking the hook I notice that the ship was called "The Gold Ship" and one source implies that it may have been scuttled deliberately. I would have changed the hook but I could find no mention in the article. Can you consider? I realise you have been reading the sources more than my 30 sec glance and I'm certainly not saying you need to take a "tabloid" angle, but I'm surprised these rumours? were not dismissed/discussed as they are interesting. Happy Halloween Victuallers (talk) 10:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm a little unsure how to handle the 'Gold Ship' angle... there was sooo much speculation at the time re: the cause of the sinking. The GS angle came to prominence it was suggested it was deliberately scuttled for salvage. Then so investigations that its been kinda hard to summarize and keep it all straight... i'll take another look at the links re: GS. Sladew (talk) 18:58, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Busy

[edit]

.... and I stopped to look to see if you had merely made the one article.... I have added some pictures (which you can choose from).... I have some requests for others which are just of a Mere. I will nominate this for DYK as well. Do feel free to scream if you feel you are being stalked. It would help if there is a ref on every para. Welcome (back?) to Wikipedia. Victuallers (talk) 14:14, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Victualers. Thanks for the pics on the Mere article. I had seen the woman on flickr but was unsure of the copyright so left it. i actually work close to a major museum in NZ, so I'll pop over this week and take some photos for "Mere" and some other oceanic tribal pics. Thanks for the welcome. I'm a long time user but first time contributor. Now I know the effort thats involved I'll probably scale back to a couple of articles a month. Otherwise, my wife and the baby might get too upset... :) Sladew (talk) 18:59, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Re copyright - I had a very useful discussion on Flickr with the NZ museum which might interest you http://www.flickr.com/photos/nationallibrarynz/2278868788/ Victuallers (talk) 10:26, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, Victualers on an entirely different question, do you know anybody who deal with the map templates? I'd like to find out whether its possible to dynamically draw "routes" for my next articles update. Sladew (talk) 18:58, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Paths / Routes to be overlaid on maps

[edit]

Hi, I'm quite excited to have used the template:location map+ to place markers on a map Ibn_Battuta#Places_visited_by_Ibn_Battuta. The next step is to show paths overlaid onto the map.

So, I've worked up a nice and simple solution to this problem of route or path overlays. I've sandboxed it and I'm very happy with a first cut testing. I'll move on to cross-browser testing tomorrow. Can somebody with a LOT more experience with templates than me, give me some guidance on the following questions:

  • Should I cut a new template for my changes or roll them into Location map+ (I really don't want to fork unnecessarily, but I don't want to mess up anybody elses use of that template...)
  • Is there any sort of process for "approving" / testing this template for use, or do I just throw it up and start dropping it on pages??

Many thanks for your help with this. Sladew (talk) 11:02, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone can create a template, there is no fixed review process. You may wish to get some feedback on your draft version using WP:RFF or (perhaps more usefully) ask for feedback from WikiProject Maps as they may have ideas about how to merge or test consistency with other existing templates. (talk) 11:12, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for those links. I've been asking all over but feel a bit lost. I'll definitely try there! Sladew (talk) 11:19, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your feedback question

[edit]

My suggestion is to check out the Map workshop. The link is to a page to request a map be created, which isn't exactly what you are asking, but you can either post a request for feedback in the request section, or you can look at the editors who hang out there, and post a question to their talk page. Another place to check out is WikiProject Maps (oops, looks like you found that place). Finally, the talkpage at Wikipedia talk:Template messages isn't exactly on topic, but those people are familiar with templates, and might be able to help.--SPhilbrickT 14:55, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. I'll check there. Sladew (talk) 18:37, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Edward Douglas

[edit]

Hi, great work on Charles Edward Douglas. Have you nominated this for DYK? Schwede66 06:32, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Schwede66, thanks for the kind words about the article. To tell the truth, I don't quite know how to nominate for a DYK. My previous two nominations were by other people... Sladew (talk) 10:08, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have nominated the article. If you want, I can teach you a few tricks, amongst them how to make a DYK nomination (as you write very nice articles!). Schwede66 20:25, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for the nomination, I appreciate it. I'd also appreciate any tips/techniques. I'm aiming to turn out an article every 3-4 weeks (any more, and the wife and baby would kill me), and I'm still a bit new to it all. BTW, I liked you addition of the info about the river crossing and Charlie's quote, nicely worked in. There were a couple of quotes that he made that I might try to wok into the article in a similar fashion. Cheers Sladew (talk) 21:14, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, DYK nominations. Easy to do. I always use this template and it's really just following your nose. When you've written an article in your user space, the most important thing is to do the nomination within 5 days of moving it into article space, and to point this out in the comment field of the nomination (as it's really easy to overlook when checking the nomination, and reviewers very regularly don't see this unless it's pointed out). If you expand an article, again it has to be done within 5 days of starting the expansion. I see that you are working on Gustavus von Tempsky and you won't get this to meet DYK requirements, as it was already quite long before you started, i.e. you won't achieve a five fold expansion. Template:Location map+overlay has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Thank you. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:21, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. I'm pleased to see that you've rolled the 'overlay image' into Template:Location map+ and especially thanks for changing the Ibn Battuta maps across to the new template. Sladew (talk) 08:49, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The file File:Ibn Battuta Itinerary 1332-1346 (Black Sea Area, Central Asia, India, South East Asia and China).png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned, no foreseeable use because it does not contain an underlying map, redundant to File:Travelroute of Ibn Battuta.png and other similar images

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Hey! I like your Ibn Battuta map. They are using it on the Turkish page as well.

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template:Location_map~ https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template:Location_map%2B/overlay This is how to do it, right? They're using your map as an example for the Location Map Overlay page as well. I want to try doing it for Evliya Çelebi's travels! GirayArat (talk) 20:13, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
