Siena's peer review

[edit]

I think that you have a strong introductory paragraph about your findings on Sandra Eleta. In order to improve it, you may want to add the different themes Sandra focuses on throughout her photography series. It may be critical to also note how her themes relate to society at the time.

You state that Sandra Eleta studied in New York and workied with Ken Heyman and George Tice. I think this is good evidence of what influenced Sandra Eleta's methodologies. I think you should expand more on her time in the U.S. and what she learned. You can probably make connections to her later works in Panama.

In addition, as we saw in lecture Sandra Eleta allowed her subjects to assert their own agency through her pictures. It would be beneficial to add to your research how this agency affects the work of Sandra Eleta.

You describe that Sandra Eleta is best known for her piece showcased at the Hammer Museum. I think that this information is crucial because it demonstrates a pivotal moment in her artistic career. For this reason, I also think you should present further analysis on this piece and why it was revolutionary at the time she captured this series.

Moreover, I think you should include information about what Sandra Eleta used her photgraphy for. For instance, did she use it to make any social commentaries? Or did she represent specific communities? Essentially, what purposes did her photgraphy fulfill?

As a woman and photographer, Sandra Eleta most likely faced obstacles. However, as shown by your research, she had mutliple solo exhibitions. Therefore, you should mention obstacles (if any) and how she overcame them. If she did not experience specific obstacles, I think you should mention how she acquired access into many of these galleries. For example, what captivated the audience and museum curators?

Overall, I think that so far you present information essential to recognizing the impact of Sandra Eleta as a Latin American female artist.

The only other thing I would suggest would be in formatting. You should make a separate section for your references.
