Hi, Shan, welcome to Wikipedia! Klortho (talk) 01:56, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shan, Welcome to the Wiki space. I am happy to have company. Last night when I got started I was feeling lonely. I like the course so far, but I am late getting started so I have quite a bit of work piled up. I am enjoying the Wikipedia assignment. Aehall47 (talk) 13:46, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey!

[edit]

Hi Shan!

Great to talk to you here as well! I'm trying to stay a little bit ahead so I can get used to having an account on Wikipedia! :) Did you already have a Wiki account before the class? Rashaalam (talk) 18:02, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, just created one and still trying to figure it all out. I'm also trying to stay a bit ahead because I'm also enrolled in two other courses. ShanSabri (talk) 18:13, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Two other courses?! How are you managing that?! I'm taking one other class - Biochemistry. Rashaalam (talk) 18:56, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So far it's going alright. I'm enrolled in a Bioinformatics course and an Adv Cell Bio course. Best of luck in Biochem! ShanSabri (talk) 21:07, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's quite a bit of work! I'll have to take Adv Cell Bio next semester. Thanks, and best of luck to you too! Rashaalam (talk) 23:20, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

Just dropping by to introduce myself to some fellow classmates! I see this is your first online course! How cool that it happens to be one where we're learning about Wikipedia as well - hope you're enjoying it so far! Jennifergr (talk) 17:48, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shan and Jennifergr, welcome on board. It is nice knowing about you all. Seguncha (talk) 18:25, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey guys! It is nice to meet you both. I'm excited to start contributing to the wiki world. This should be fun! ShanSabri (talk) 20:27, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Shan its John from Cell I

[edit]

Funny story. I didn't realize there were two wiki sections when i first signed up, so i just signed up and ended up in the wrong section. I just fixed the problem and signed up for my section but saw that you posted on my talk page. So, I just wanted to write you back and say thanks again for helping me print out our cell I lecture notes. Good luck with your wiki project! I'll see you Thursday. JGLehman3 (talk) 00:51, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey John! Haha when I first signed up I was talking with students in your section because no one from my section had signed up yet. What do you think of the class so far? I'm kinda excited to start contributing to wiki because I use it almost on a daily basis and I feel like I own it to wiki. Are you ready for Journal Club in Cell I? I just read the article and I hope to answer the questions later tonight. Anyways, good luck with your wiki project too! ShanSabri (talk) 16:36, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Class is going well so far i'm getting the hang of the online thing. As far as the journal club for Cell I, i'm at the same point you are. I need to finish typing up the questions tonight. At least it's a short article with only one figure! 143.69.66.83 (talk) 12:43, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, i forgot i needed to be logged in to have my signature show up. The above comment is me. JGLehman3 (talk) 12:45, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like some of the questions are irrelevant to the figure in the journal article. The data from the figure was even taken from a completely different study. Do you think we still need to answer these questions? ShanSabri (talk) 15:18, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just going to answer the best i can, but yeah the question sheet is for a generic journal article and not specific to the journal article we have so i think there are quite a few questions which don't really work. JGLehman3 (talk) 17:00, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks John! That's exactly what I thought. I'll see you tomorrow! Take care ShanSabri (talk) 17:19, 26 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:In vivo delivery of siRNAs using SNALPs to achieve gene silencing.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:In vivo delivery of siRNAs using SNALPs to achieve gene silencing.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 07:51, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Shan, You'll find it's very difficult to use copyrighted images on Wikipedia. They take copyright very seriously. You can try to find an image like this on Wikimedia Commons, and if you can't then you could either draw it yourself, or request that some volunteer draw it for you, on this request page. Klortho (talk) 12:32, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm I thought I cited it correctly but I guess according to Fut.Perf. "it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone." I've tried to search through the Wikimedia Commons for a similar image but I can't seem to find anything related to SNALPs. The image I was trying to add is not essential to the article but it would most defiantly enrich a readers understanding. I'd like to send a request in for a volunteer to draw it but this mechanism doesn't seem to fit under the Biology outline. Would it be safe to post a request under miscellaneous? ShanSabri (talk) 16:40, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Shan. I actually don't know the answer to your question, because I haven't used that page before. If it were me, I might just go ahead and create a new category in the outline somewhere under biology. But, I'd really suggest you think about drawing this on your own -- the drawing is not very complex. And the copy you uploaded is pretty ugly -- I'm sure just about anyone could do a better job. You might play with Inkscape, which is an open source drawing program that produces nice SVG line drawings. Just a thought. Klortho (talk) 19:59, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One more thought -- if I were going to try to redo this drawing using inkscape, I'd probably start with a drawing from Wikimedia commons that had a little double-helix somewhere, that I could reuse. The rest is just boxes, lines and arrows. Klortho (talk) 20:02, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've decided to try to draw just the SNALP rather than its full delivery mechanism. I'd like to anticipate it being an image showing the siRNA enclosed in a liposome containing both cationic and neutral lipids with polyethylene glycol linkers. This image should help the readers visualize what a SNALP looks like. I've never used Inkscape before and I'm already having a difficult time trying to make a liposome. Do you have any tips? Is there a way to copy a single phospholipid pair into a circular structure? ShanSabri (talk) 16:50, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, never mind I think I got the hang of it. I've made a very basic lipid nanoparticle structure that will hopefully aid in the reader's understanding. I've posted the image on Group81F's talk page. ShanSabri (talk) 19:36, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nice SNALP, beautiful! (I just tweeted it.) Klortho (talk) 21:56, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One comment -- I haven't actually done this before (you are ahead of me in this area) but I have heard that people prefer files on Wikimedia Commons to be uploaded in SVG format (see here). It is one reason Inkscape is popular among this crowd -- because SVG is the underlying format for that program. This allows them to be reused easily. For example, someone could take your drawing, and translate the text callouts into another language, to use in another languages's Wikipedia installation. I think you uploaded the jpg version, so if you had time, you might consider uploading the original SVG instead, or in addition to this one. Klortho (talk) 22:03, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good call. Here is the updated file: SNALP ShanSabri (talk) 16:11, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Klortho (talk) 18:30, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!
