Blocked
[edit]As you have violated your WP:TOPICBAN from all edits covered by WP:ARBIPA, which was part of the conditions imposed on you when you were unblocked, I have reinstated your indefinite block. These conditions were documented in User talk:Shaan Sengupta/Archive 2 and listed at Wikipedia:Editing_restrictions#Active_editing_restrictions. --Yamla (talk) 12:28, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yamla I have no excuses but only explanation and apologies for my actions. Its just that I went to that page when I was looking at Cinderella's edits while we were involved in similar articles. I went there to see whether they had flags and found that a few of them had partof missing. So I added them, which was in violation of my TBan. The only good, if any, thing about it is that it was nothing controversial and only basic. I can assure you that it was totally unintentional. By no means I did that on purpose. Ever since I was unblocked, I have tired my best to act responsibly and respect the terms. One instance happened when I edited the ICC president page. Voorts explained what and how it went wrong. Since then I always acted carefully. But I don't know how I forgot today about it. You can see my contributions have been very limited, bcoz of me not having good knowledge of world outside my country. Still I tried my best. The conflict in my edits were mainly limited to Indian politics, still I gladly accepted WP:ARBIPA, broadly construed. I would request you and the community to rethink this, and give me a chance. I will take more precautions and will try my best to not work in haste. I am sorry once again. Shaan SenguptaTalk 13:00, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- You've repeatedly violated your topic ban. You clearly understood your topic ban. This is on top of previously substantially abusing multiple accounts. You were given multiple chances and decided to squander them. I'm sorry, as far as I'm concerned, this is the end of the line. --Yamla (talk) 13:15, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Yamla This was the third instance when I violated the TBan. First was when I created my userpage, bcoz I thought it was only limited to articles and not userpages. I requested it to be deleted when Toddy1 explained it to me. Second was when I edited ICC president page. I did it since it was about a page of world cricket governing body. I was told that the things I edited contained parts related to WP:ARBIPA. When I got aware about it, I took a step back and became extra careful. This is the instance where it was completely my mistake and has no explanation. And I am regretful for that. Had it striked me, I would have reverted myself. I know I made a mistake. I paid for the evasions. I was unblocked with a TBan. I would respectfully disagree that I decided to squandered my chances. I limited my activity here only so that I don't violate any rules and terms. This was an instance when it happened which shouldn't have. I am very sorry for that. If given a chance, I will definitely do my best to fix this too. I am sorry. Shaan SenguptaTalk 13:29, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Claiming "I limited my activity here only so that I don't violate any rules and terms" is so blatantly false it beggars belief. You are free to contest your block. I oppose any unblock request. --Yamla (talk) 13:31, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- Shaan Sengupta, I suggest that you make a list of edits that you made that breached your topic ban. It might help you assess how often you did it, and what led you to doing it.
- You did four on 8 January 2025.
- User:Voorts told you in December 2024 that some of your edits on pages to do with cricket and cricketers violated the ban.[1]
- On 25 November 2024 you made two posts (5 edits) to WP:ANI#... Kannappa and were warned about it here.
- There were some earlier ones. -- Toddy1 (talk) 14:27, 8 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Toddy1 What let me do them, I have explained above. You have listed all except the ones that you only made me aware. The creation of my userpage which I nominated for deletion based on your advice. Shaan SenguptaTalk 14:46, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

Note: Before appealing my block, I would like to take some weeks, maybe months off. I would inspect what went wrong and how it happened. This was my mistake which should not have happened. In the meantime, I shall continue to work on other projects where I believe I can contribute to make WMF projects a better place. I have been uploading images on Commons, if someone wants they can add them in articles. What I wanted to do, maybe others do it. One more regret, I thought sockpuppetry/block evasion was my past and would never haunt me, but my userpage shows it still is there. I would apologise to everyone who expressed confidence in me, especially Toddy1, Voorts and Yamla. Maybe, someday the community will give me a chance to edit again. Thank you and goodbye until then. Unblock request
[edit]Shaan Sengupta (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
Hello everyone, I would like to start with an unconditional apology for every mistake that I have made in the past. Be it disruptions initially with my previous accounts, when I was new here or the sockpuppetry/block evasions. Now, I was blocked for my TBan violation of WP:ARBIPA. In this unblock request I will address that. For my explanation of sockpuppetry and block evasion earlier, I would request you to kindly refer to SO unblock request in my archives. I was unblocked per SO with some conditions regarding the issues raised by some users regarding my edits in India-related articles. I was unblocked under condition that I will not edit anything covered under WP:ARBIPA for a period of 9 months (appealable to the community via WP:AN). I unintentionally violated this TBAN multiple times.
- TBan violations
- First, when I created my userpage. I nominated it for deletion after I was made aware by Toddy1.
- Second, when I participated in a discussion at ANI. I was made aware of it by Pppery in the discussion and I immediately left it. Also Ratnahastin told me about it at my talk page and I explained them everything there.
- Third, when I edited two pages related to cricket, Chairman of the International Cricket Council and List of presidents of the International Cricket Council. Ratnahastin made unblocking admin Voorts aware about it at their TP. I was made aware about my lack of knowledge there.
- Fourth, I did on 8th January 2025, which is mentioned in the thread above.
- Note: I have not included the edits that happened here as a result of moving files in Commons, part of Global rename/replace.
Now what has changed since then. When I was unblocked, I didn't know how the term broadly construed was defined. Initially I thought I was barred only from articles related to ARBIPA. So I created my Userpage and participated in a discussion thinking they weren't covered under it. Similarly, I had thought pages related to global cricket administration aren't limited to a country, so I edited it. I had no idea that parts of it are also covered under my TBan until I was told about it by Voorts. Then I made a blunder on 8th January 2025 with those 4 edits as a result of which I was blocked. In these days, I have done extensive reading trying to understand as much things I can. I have also read and understood WP:BAN especially, WP:TBAN and can assure the community that there won't be any violations from my side in the future. Please give me a chance again. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 11:28, 24 January 2025 (UTC)
Decline reason:
You took off 11 days (not weeks or months). I see no pathway forward for you without at least a six month wait, and at the end of that time you will need to tell us what will be different in the future. This whole situation beggars belief to me, as well. 331dot (talk) 00:19, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
Thank you @331dot for your inputs. Yes I said I would like to take sometime off, but as I mentioned that I did some reading of policies and guidelines and realised what and where I went wrong. That's why I came up with this unblock request. Regarding the WP:SO, I will do what you say if that's the only way forward. And the difference will be that now I understand the extent of the limitations (TBAN) on me, which I didn't 11 days back. I will be coming back here after 6 months hoping the community gives me a chance to edit here again. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 01:27, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
- My take on this is that it is very hard for someone who lives in India to comply with a WP:ARBIPA topic ban. If Shaan Sengupta makes an unblock request in July 2025, maybe admins should consider trying to achieve the aim of the topic ban in a different way. What about a six or nine month trial period, with a pblock from article space, and a narrow topic ban.-- Toddy1 (talk) 22:24, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
