Question about precinct map for al state house special election

[edit]

Hey, just saw your page for the AL Special house election, nice work. I was wondering how you made those two dem primary precinct maps, I'd like to try one myself. BigCheese76 (talk) 13:39, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! First I downloaded the census block shapefiles and imported them into QGIS, then I exported the shapefile as an SVG so that it could be edited in Inkscape. Once in Inkscape, I used the union tool to join blocks into precincts and colored them according to the color legends (linked) ScoringRed (talk) 14:17, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
two questions, where did you download the census blocks from, and how did you match the vote totals from each precinct with the block colors? BigCheese76 (talk) 16:49, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First, you can find most shapefile data on the Census TIGER/Line database. Second, county websites will usually have their precinct-level election results and precinct names, which you can then match with each other. ScoringRed (talk) 16:57, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Another question (sorry to bother you) how can I download the files to my computer if my chromebook is unable to support the files on the census bureau website? BigCheese76 (talk) 17:18, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
