Why the Revert?

[edit]

Why the automatic revert on Tony Blair Sasquatch? Am I not a 'member of the club', and therefore you automatically revert without thinking or explaining? Wikipedia style policy is for TOC not to float, except in exceptional circumstances. I see no reason for the Blair article to be considered an exceptional case, and thus the standard position for TOC. --84.68.16.54 08:17, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply, I will check out the discussion page. I am an infrequent contributor, hence no account, but I just feel sometimes that anon edits are automatically reverted without due cause. Not all anon users are vandals.... Thanks for your comments anyway. Regards. --84.68.16.54 08:28, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's time for me to 'join the club' and register an account ... need a good user name. Having checked out the discussion, history and various flavours of TOC position, I actually think floated top left is best for this Blair article. A convert ... --84.68.16.54 09:19, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vfd closing

[edit]

Splash passed this on to me: Use {{subst:vt}} and {{subst:vb}} for closing vfds. Saves server strain. humblefool®Deletion Reform 03:33, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • We're both doing the same thing: clearing out the backlog. Great minds...:) 03:37, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the conflicting close on this. When I edit to close I remove the "&section=1" from the edit URL, which ensures that I am editing the whole document and not just the VfD section--this ensures I don't accidentally embed a close inside someone else's, and instead get a hard edit conflict when saving.

The VfD was close, I was tempted to transwiki, but in the end the objections of Grace Note and Robert Horning led me to rule this out on the basis of absence of consensus. I discarded one vote to delete because the editor in question is quite new and has made the vast majority of his edits on VfD. --Tony SidawayTalk 05:48, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sasquatch, Just a little disagreement with the note you left on this user's talk page; you say The second that you release this under GNU you revoke all copyrights on it as GNU and copyright are not compatible. I don't believe that this is correct. Contributers who license their work per the GFDL still own the copyright and still, for example, can use the work for their own commercial purposes.

Please see Wikipedia:Copyrights#Contributors.27_rights_and_obligations; If you contribute material to Wikipedia, you thereby license it to the public under the GFDL ... you retain copyright to your materials. You can later republish and relicense them in any way you like. However, you can never retract the GFDL license. --Duk 05:32, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't use the words public domain either, that's someting else entirely. I usually point people to the links under every edit window.
With regards to this article, I'm going to ask for an email of confirmation from Ms. Wallace. The IP address giving permission is from California, but Ms. Wallace hails from N.Carolina. --Duk 05:56, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anon reverting Taiwan article

[edit]

Thought you might want to know, the anon who was reverting Taiwan and Template:Republic of China infobox to POV versions appears to be back at it again. I'd report it in as vandalism but this anon seems to have little trouble switching IPs after being blocked. -Loren 09:05, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Protection Rules

[edit]

Thanks for the protect on Ted Kennedy. Could you undo your revert? I'm pretty sure you were not supposed to revert before your protection. Thanks "Do not edit or revert a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice, a link to Wikipedia:Accuracy dispute or Wikipedia:NPOV dispute, or a similar disclaimer about the current state of an article, unless there is widespread agreement that the page was protected in violation of these policies."

Begin Silverback, you appear to have made a mistake or a POV revert after the article was protected. The revert war was on the detailing of documented behavior at the time of the rape, not the fatboy link. So there was no consensus. Hopefully, you will correct your action to the position of neutrality.--Silverback 22:28, August 6, 2005 (UTC)

You have reinstituted your violation of protection rules, why did you do this, have you come under pressure of some sort, you should stick with version that was in place before your protection.--Silverback 01:00, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
Kelly Martin and McLaine were not editing on this issue, they have chimed in after the fact. You really should stick to the rules instead of trying to weigh the equity. It wasn't simple vandalism, but a legitimate edit so the rule is clear. There was no consensus on this issue, not even a discussion yet. There may have been a consensus to oppose, unseen any contribution the fatboy anon offered, but that consensus should not be honored.--Silverback 03:01, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Unlock article

[edit]

Please UNLOCK KENNEDY ARTICLE. The info should be included because of the attention it generated. HOWEVER, that section was mainly POV garbage written by a 2 year old. so, the solution is to add:

The Senator was involved in the rape trial of William Kennedy Smith in 1991, having took stand during the trial.[1]

That is brief, like it should be since Kennedy didn't actually commit anything, he just got sucked into the media attention, and its NPOV.Voice of All(MTG) 03:17, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

FYI, I have filed an incident report, re: your violation of the policy on protection. There should be little tolerance for misconduct by admins. They should be held to a higher, not lower standard.--Silverback 03:20, August 8, 2005 (UTC)

Please help me with my RfC

[edit]

Hey Sasquatch. How are you doing? Listen, I'm having some problems with some overzealous admins -- first of all, they blocked my wife, Pamstar, claiming she was a "sock puppet." It is true that I did put her up to nominate me for an Admin, but it was supposed to be just a experiment to see how I would do. However, she was blocked for that. Can please consider unblocking her as she is very upset about not being able to use Wikipedia now. Next they filed a RfC against me to harrass me here. Could you please take a look at it? Thanks, Rainbowwarrior1977 04:56, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

--- Thanks for you help, bud! I appreciate it. However, I swear to god Pam is not a sockpuppet. I take personal responsibility for putting her up to nominate me. When I haven't been bugging her, she has made good edits on her own. Thanks.Rainbowwarrior1977 05:42, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

--- Hello Sasquatch. I appreciate your offer. It does sound good at this point. However, I am quite myself rather upset at personal comments levelled against me at my own talk page and also on the talk pages of "Soltak" and "Rusty2005," who along with "Essjay," were the protagonists of this RfC. This particular dispute started when I told Rusty, who attends Cambridge, that I dated a daughter of a Cambridge professor a long time ago. This is absoultely true, and these 2 responded with immense vitriol, calling me a "twit" etc. I would apologise to the users I offended in all other matters, but in this particular dispute over the Cambridge Prof's daughter, I have nothing about which to apologise. Also, I did some substantive editing to the Rule against perpetuities that I'm sure any legal scholar can accept.

In short, I would apologise for anything I've done, and take your offer, outside of the stuff said about me regarding my dating of Larissa.Rainbowwarrior1977 04:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam78 22:56, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your patience and your help. Now I'm finished, you can go ahead if you want. For example, you might check the population data, because I was not always sure whether to include the metropolitan areas or just the city proper in the individual cases, so I may haved decide wrongly. Adam78 23:10, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

thanks!

[edit]

I totally agree. I am sure we can work out a deal with everything you want excepting the controversy over Larissa. (I dont know why those two are getting so upset over that, perhaps jealousy?) I am right now composing a personal response to Soltak on the RfC (in an objective and dispassionate tone) and once the dispute with them over Larissa is over with, I'll be more than glad to accept your terms. Thank you and have a good evening.Rainbowwarrior1977 04:56, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

So it seems like they were gonna do what they wanted to do all along, moving the case to the arbritation committee. So how does that work? This essay and others claim repeatedly that I'm not answering their arguments, when if you look at the RfC, I am answering their arguments, and it is they that have not answered mine. And Rusty is still being snippy about this Larissa thing. I believe this is one of the roots of the problem. What do you suggest?Rainbowwarrior1977 17:58, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you, in effect, subst {{db-reason}} into {{Db-nonsense}}? Leaving nonsense as a call to the basic db tempalte would ensure that any future change in the db tempalte would be reflected in all the speedy deleteion tempaltes, which IMO would be a good thing. The usual argument about server performance and possible widespread vandalism used to oppose meta-templates don't, IMO, apply here, since none of the speedy delete templates are (I should hope) likely to be on a large number of articles at once, nor are those articles likely to be frequently accessed. Please consider reverting this change. {{nonsense}} has been a call to another tempalte ever since it was created. DES (talk) 17:01, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see you did the same to {{Db-repost}}. Again i urge you to consider reverting this change, and doing the same to any other speedy deletion templates you may have made such a change to. DES (talk) 17:05, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Templates in Templates, and Speedys in particular

[edit]

I am quite aware of the general reasons for avoiding meta-tempaltes, as I thought my previosu note to you would have indicated. But as I understand it, the server cost only becomes significant when such templates are used on many pages, or on frequently accessed pages, or when the base template is frequently changed. None of these cases apply to the speedy deletion templates. The main reason for implementing these templates via trasclusion of {{db-reason}} is to ensure that they always have exactly the same text -- that any changes made to the general text of {{db-reason}} are automatically made to all the other relevant templates. It is not a question of being able to edit the test of the subst'd temaplte, it is a question of ensurign that any future edit to {{db-reason}} is also reflected in the other speedy deletion tempaltes. Please consider reverting this change or droppign your objectiosn to someone else reverting it, or at least discussing it on Template talk:Db-reason#Transclusion.

Lucidish edits as anon

[edit]
I (65.92.56.236) am lucidish. However, unforunately, Wikipedia has developed some kind of error that bars me from editing any full article when logged in -- I can only edit in sections. Yet the problem does not occur when I am anonymous.
Therefore, if I need to edit introductions, or have access to the full page, I must do it anonymously. I have alerted Metawiki about the problem. Until the problem is sorted out, people can be as suspicious as they like, because I'm powerless to do a thing. Lucidish

Thanks

I figured out why we were having trouble with the CSS; it's a .js issue! To change "edit this page" to "edit" you have to add
if(document.getElementById('ca-edit'))
       document.getElementById('ca-edit').firstChild.innerHTML = 'Edit';

to your function changeLinks(){ section. The reason I wanted it was that the new tabs went off the edge of the page, and I knew shrinking the "edit" tab would fix the problem. Thanks for all your efforts! -- Essjay · Talk 08:58, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Errh... what is this all about? Lupo 10:53, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

This is a thread. If you want to stay synchronised, don't substitute it. Some of us are considering forming a wikiproject (or something) to coordinate on scripts for the Monobook skin. Ironically, almost of all of it will be implemented in JS, not CSS. I thought you might be a knowledgable person when it comes to this stuff. Alphax τεχ 13:58, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Guys, just posting a link to here on people's talk pages is good enough to attract interested parties. Transcluding this screws up section editing on all affected talk pages. And I don't think I'll get the new message alert anyway if this is transcluded. Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Help us decide a name then! Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
As to coordinating scripts for the Monobook skin: what's the objective? A library of plug-in JavaScript snippets? A manual for the CSS used? Lupo 14:07, August 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, a library of plugins. Alphax τεχ 15:07, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I can try to help with css more than js btw as I'm much better than that (but still not that good). If anyone needs a person to double check stuff I also have a bit o' time on me hands =) This project looks cool though. Sasquatch 19:42, August 10, 2005 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians in Hawaii

[edit]

Aloha. I have been working on Wikipedia: WikiProject Hawaii as well as populating Category:Wikipedians in Hawaii. On August 7, I added five users to the category, all of whom claim to live in Hawaii, either on their user page or on discussion pages:

  1. 02:03, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:Marshman
  2. 02:01, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:KeithH
  3. 02:01, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:Zora
  4. 02:00, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:Aoi
  5. 01:59, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:Viriditas

Around two hours later at 04:22, a discussion was started on WP:ANI regarding User:Coqsportif and his disruptive trolling. At 13:02, User:Coqsportif added his user page to the category, [3] two minutes after (13:00) making a comment to my talk pge. [4]:

  1. 13:02, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User:Coqsportif
  2. 13:00, 7 August 2005 (hist) (diff) User talk:Viriditas

It's safe to assume he saw the category on my user page and then added it to his own user page two minutes later. I wasn't aware that he had added this category until 03:12 on August 10, and removed it at that time, since he had never mentioned anything about Hawaii, and had an edit history of adding and removing things incorrectly, as well as engaging in trollish edits. It wasn't until 12:14 on August 10 that he claimed to be "Hawaiian", [5] and the page has not been reverted after that time. So with that said, I hope you undersand that your comments on my page, There is nothing wrong for the user to claim to be from and/or living Hawaii and therefore you have no right to refute that claim is incorrect, as I never reverted the category after he made his initial claim. --Viriditas | Talk 00:24, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

Hello, Sasquatch, just wanted to let you know I unblocked an anon IP address. I'm at a computer lab at Stony Brook University, and a high school student I know comes next to me, and sees me editing the DYK template. First, he types my keyboard so that the edit summary for protecting the main page image includes two random letters. Then, when I proceed and tell him to stop, he gets on the computer and vandalises George W Bush, as you noticed, putting messages to me on the article. I fullheartedly support your block, but he got tired after I didn't respond, and he left the computer lab. I figured it would be safe to unblock, considering that it was preventing me from editing again. Thanks for your understanding and quick response to the vandalism! Help with DotSix

[edit]

Thanks for reverting DotSix's latest troublemaking on Talk:Truth a few minutes ago. That was his 8th reversion in the last 24 hours of that page. Can you please block him again? He's been blocked 4 times in the last week. Blocking for only 24 hrs doesn't seem to teach him anything. Is there anyway you could block him for a much longer period? Best of all: could you block him until his RfA has been decided? --Nate Ladd 06:09, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

OK. Now he has struckthrough part of my report of his violation of 3RR here: [6]. You said "if he makes one more wrong move" (By the way, he is up to 9 reverts in less than 24 hrs now.) --Nate Ladd 07:14, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Sasquatch! Would you mind taking a look at User talk:Kevin baas? I blocked him for 24 hours after a WP:3RR violation, reported by Raul at WP:AN/3RR. I'm now thoroughly confused, because of multiple reverts, page moves, and what not. Thanks for giving us your opinion! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 23:21, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I just needed another opinion; I was getting thoroughly confused with the page moves and history, etc. I'm going to unblock him, with the provision that he not edit those pages (which I have protected, but I think all of the involved parties are admins). Thanks for your help! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 23:40, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
